UIW physical therapy prepared to hit the ground running | University ...

The 2012-2013 school year at University of the Incarnate Word will kick-off with the grand opening celebration of UIWs Debbie and Naty Saidoff Center at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30 at 9160 Guilbeau Road. The Saidoff Center will be home to UIW?s School of Physical Therapy and newest Extended Academic Programs location.

?The overall goal for the School of Physical Therapy faculty, staff, and students is to become an active partner with the San Antonio community,? said Dr. Caroline Goulet, dean and professor of the School of Physical Therapy. ?Students will be provided with opportunities to learn while meeting specific community healthcare needs.?

The new state of the art facility stretches across 75,000 square feet and has been designed to meet the needs of the physical therapy program and allow students to get involved in the community. It features a library, two lecture halls, a clinic, teaching labs and more.

?We are committed to educating physical therapists as frontline health care professionals who are prepared to function competently and collaborate effectively,? Goulet said. ?You may see some of our students and faculty working with local middle school athletes while others might participate in community health fairs providing information about injury prevention and health promotion or offer a balance clinic for older adults.?

The charter ?inaugural? class of 54 Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students began orientation on Tuesday, Aug. 14 and will be ready to hit the ground running when classes begin Monday, Aug. 20.

Goulet said the students come predominantly from South Texas, and the eight full-time faculty members are graduates from PT programs across the US and Canada to bring rich background diversity to the student body.

?UIW DPT students will acquire basic knowledge, skills and behaviors in preparation for their first six weeks of professional practice education in May 2013,? she said. ?Faculty will remain busy acting as role models for the students, taking leadership roles in the state and national professional associations, and sharing scholarly work at professional conferences and through publications.?
