Prosecutors Wednesday charged a neighborhood watch guard with second-degree murder in the killing of an unarmed US black teenager that sparked nationwide anger amid suspicions it was racially motivated.
"Today, we filed an information charging George Zimmerman with murder in the second degree," Florida state attorney Angela Corey told a press conference.
"I can tell you, we did not come to this decision lightly," she added after a weeks-long investigation into the February 26 death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, adding that Zimmerman -- who is Hispanic -- was in custody in Florida.
Zimmerman stands accused of fatally shooting Martin inside a gated community in the central town of Sanford, as the teen -- wearing a hoodie on the rainy night -- was headed home after buying candy at a convenience store.
Zimmerman described the teen as "real suspicious," according to police transcripts. Martin's family and supporters say the teenager may have been the victim of racial profiling.
But Zimmerman's supporters say Martin attacked first, breaking Zimmerman's nose before knocking him to the ground and repeatedly slamming his head against the sidewalk. They insist Zimmerman fired in self-defense.
A controversial Florida law allows the use of deadly force when a person senses a reasonable fear of death or serious injury.
A bond hearing has been scheduled for Thursday, Zimmerman's new defense attorney Mark O'Mara told CNN, adding his client would plead not guilty.
Authorities booked Zimmerman into jail at the Polk Correctional Facility at 8:30 pm Wednesday (0030 GMT Thursday) on a second degree murder charge.
The case has touched a raw nerve in the US public regarding race and violence -- and O'Mara said his client was "concerned about getting a fair trial."
"There has been a lot of information flowing. I think a lot of it has been premature and maybe inappropriate. I don't think a case like this should be tried here," O'Mara told reporters in Orlando, Florida.
Zimmerman "is troubled that the state decided to charge him," O'Mara said. "I think anyone charged with second-degree murder would be scared."
Corey, who was appointed special prosecutor in the case, acknowledged the pressure that her department had been under, saying "we do not prosecute by public pressure or petition. We prosecute based on the facts of any given case as well as the laws of the state of Florida."
Second degree murder is defined as a killing that is not premeditated. A conviction carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, according to US media.
"We simply wanted an arrest -- nothing more, nothing less -- and we got it, and I say thank you," the teen's mother Sybrina Fulton said in a Washington press conference after Corey announced the charges.
"I just want to speak from my heart to your heart, because a heart has no color. It is not black, it is not white, it's red. I want to say thank you from my heart to your heart," she said, breaking down in tears.
The teen's father, Tracy Martin, thanked supporters for their compassion.
"This is just the beginning," Martin said. "We will march and march and march until the right thing is done."
In a statement, Fulton thanked "the millions of people around the world" who signed a petition calling for justice in the case that gathered more than 2.5 million signatures.
"We will continue to fight for justice for Trayvon, not only for our family but to help prevent racial profiling from happening to other teens," she said.
Speaking to reporters earlier in the day, Fulton and Martin shared stories of their pain since their son's death.
"It's been a nightmare for the past 44 days," said Fulton, her voice quivering as she struggled to hold back the tears. "I've been up and down like a rollercoaster. But I know that justice will be served."
"As a parent who loses their child," said Tracy Martin, "it's very difficult to maintain our sanity."
Federal investigators are also continuing a three-week probe of the case.
"If we find evidence of a potential federal criminal civil rights crime, we will take appropriate action," US Attorney General Eric Holder said earlier at the annual convention of the National Action Network, a leading rights group.
Holder said senior Justice Department officials traveled to Sanford to meet with the Martin family and local residents and authorities.
The high-profile case even sparked unusually personal remarks last month from US President Barack Obama.
"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," Obama said, pleading for national "soul searching" over what he called a "tragedy."

4) How did you get into rope jumping and what do you like most about it?
I am a creature of habit, and I wanted a form of cardio I could stick to that I could do whenever, wherever, and without weather being a factor. ?Since I often find myself simply jumping up and down in my room while listening to rock or heavy metal music, I figured jumping rope was the natural way to go. ?I now own a few ropes, one of which I keep at work so that I can spend 20 minutes of my lunch break jumping rope. ?I wasn?t intending on doing it EVERY day at work, but it?s one of those things that gets really fun when you have the right background music to accompany it. ?So now I find myself doing it daily. ?They know me now as ?that guy who works out during lunch.? What I like most about it is the fact that it was totally natural to me. ?I had always just found myself pogoing up and down while listening to heavy music, just without the rope. Adding in the rope completed it.
5) I hear you like to squat. What?s your personal best and are you shooting for a specific goal?
My preferred form of resistance training is calisthenics. However, I make an exception for lower body. Squatting is one of my favorite things to do. I normally do 5 sets of 8-10 reps at the gym and for my final set I like to try to increase the weight. Monday this week I hit a new max. ?I did my last set with 225 lbs, which is a big milestone for me because it?s an even two 45 lb plates on each side of the barbell! I don?t really have any specific goal. ?I don?t like setting goals when it pertains to self-improvement because I see goals as stop signs. It means hitting a point and then saying ?okay, I can stop now.? ?And that?s just not how I am. ?As long as my legs don?t get so massive that I can?t fit into my riding leathers, I?m going to keep working on it.
6) What do you like to listen to when working out?
Well, on top of your typical ?gym rat metal? (Disturbed and other similar bands), I like to listen to a lot of film score tracks (typically the background music from epic battle scenes), and remixes of video game tunes. ?Yes, nerdy, I know! ?I also like listening to ?80s synth-pop bands, hard rock bands such as AC/DC, and Industrial metal such as KMFDM. ?My favorite genre of music is a subgenre of metal called Power Metal, but I find that it doesn?t make suitable background music for working out.
7) We hear from the medicine ball police that you like to toss those suckers around. What do you do with them?
Here?s another one that?s going to give away my nerdy background! Haha. I have a set of medicine balls ranging from 2 to 8 pounds that I purchased some time ago for use with a video workout program. ?I couldn?t stick to the program, however, so they gathered dust for some time. ?Then one day I got into a little argument with my sister about how the foods she is feeding her kids combined with their lack of activity is going to make them just like I was. ?I didn?t want to sit by and watch, so I started thinking of ways to get them exercising. I noticed my nephew was really into the show Dragonball Z and liked to pretend he was the characters from the show. So I gave him the lightweight medicine ball and had him imitate the movements characters make with their bodies when they perform their signature energy attacks, and then pushing/launching/throwing the ball into a wall and catching it as it came back to him. ?I put together a workout program for him based entirely on imitating his favorite Dragonball Z characters using this approach, just throwing medicine balls instead of firing mystical energy, and it ended up being a full, total body workout. It seemed so fun I figured I would try it myself, and I?ve been hooked ever since. I usually finish the medicine ball workout by doing static holding exercises with the 6 lb ball, holding it at arm?s length, arms fully extended, and slowly turning from side to side.

Updated at 1:10 a.m. ET: PYONGYANG -- North Korea said on Wednesday it was injecting fuel into a long-range rocket "as we speak'' ahead of a launch condemned by its neighbors and the West.
The launch is set to take place between Thursday and next Monday and has prompted neighbors such as the Philippines to re-route their air traffic just in case.
Japan said it would shoot down the rocket if it crossed its airspace.
The launch of the Unha-3 rocket, which North Korea says will merely put a weather satellite into space, breaches U.N. sanctions imposed to prevent Pyongyang from developing a missile that could carry a nuclear warhead.
North Korea's 'unconvincing' answers to satellite questions
It coincides with the 100th birthday celebrations of the founder of North Korea, Kim Il-sung, whose grandson, Kim Jong-un, now rules. Kim Il-sung died in 1994.
"I think the fuel injection will be completed at an appropriate date,'' Paek Chang-ho, head of the satellite control center of the Korean Committee of Space Technology, told a group of foreign journalists in the North Korea capital, Pyongyang.
He would not comment on when the fuel injection would be complete. "And as for the exact timing of the launch, it will be decided by my superiors'', Paek said.
Space consultant James Oberg asked, "When would we get the first radio signals from the satellite?" The director said the first radio signals would be received about 12 hours after launch.
Oberg told NBC News that he had plotted the orbit of the satellite and said it would not really come directly over North Korea for about 11 or 12 hours. However, radio amateurs outside North Korea have a much better opportunity to pick up signals from the satellite beginning in western Australia 20 minutes after launch. The U.S. eastern seaboard would be able to hear it in the following hour.
The director said the satellite would be broadcasting North Korean songs celebrating the "Dear Leader" and encouraged people around the world to tune in and listen.
Regional powers said the launch is a disguised test of the North's long-range missile.

South Korea, which remains technically at war with the North after their 1950-53 conflict ended with a truce rather than a peace treaty, warned Pyongyang it would deepen its isolation if it went ahead with the launch.
Security sources in Seoul, citing satellite images, have said that North Korea, which walked out of "six-party'' disarmament talks three years ago, is also preparing a third nuclear test following the launch, something it did in 2009, and a move bound to trigger further condemnation and isolation.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned that history pointed to "additional provocations" from North Korea after the launch, apparently a reference to a nuclear test.

"This launch will give credence to the view that North Korean leaders see improved relations with the outside world as a threat to their system,'' she told cadets at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
"And recent history strongly suggests that additional provocations may follow."
She also called on China to do more to ensure regional stability.
China, impoverished North Korea's only major ally, on Tuesday reiterated its pleas for calm and said it had "repeatedly expressed its concern and anxiety about the developments", Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin told a press briefing in Beijing.

This afternoon?s Stephen Strasburg-Johan Santana matchup was every bit as fun to watch as it looked on paper.
Santana was very solid, albeit in another short outing, throwing five innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts despite averaging just 88.1 miles per hour with his fastball.
Strasburg was very shaky early on, but quickly got on track and overpowered the Mets with nine strikeouts in six shutout, two-hit innings. And for the first time as a big leaguer he was allowed to go past 100 pitches, throwing 108, as the Nationals went on to win 4-0.
Strasburg?s career was temporarily derailed by Tommy John elbow surgery, but he?s picked up right where he left off and has now thrown 37 innings with a 1.21 ERA since returning late last season. His average fastball today was 94.8 miles per hour and his changeup had ridiculous movement.

Diesel prices are at their highest level in nearly four years, topping $4 a gallon, but trucking company executive Fred Johring is taking it in stride.
Johring's Golden State Express has bought low-emission, fuel-efficient diesel and natural gas rigs to comply with a clean-truck mandate at Southern California's twin ports ? with the fortunate side effect of easing the pain of high-priced diesel.
"We went from having one of the oldest local fleets to one of the newest," said Johring, whose Rancho Dominguez company sends trucks mainly on short-haul trips to and from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. "We have been somewhat insulated from the changing diesel prices."
Since getting hammered by expensive diesel in 2008, Johring and many other transport specialists have altered their businesses to reduce diesel use. Coca-Cola Co. is using electric and hybrid vehicles and training drivers to reduce idling time. FedEx Corp. has adopted sophisticated software to improve truck loading and route planning with an eye toward fuel efficiency.
Even the look of the rigs has changed. To improve aerodynamics on the road, a cutting-edge cab these days sports deflectors on the roof and sides as well as extenders to close the gap with the trailer behind. The trailer might feature side skirts or angled trays underneath so that the air flows easily past and doesn't drag on the vehicle, reducing the mileage a driver can get per gallon of fuel.
"Years ago, we preferred a classic style, rigs with tall front hoods," said Corey England, executive vice president of his family's trucking operation, C.R. England Global Transportation Inc., which operates as many as 320 rigs in California at any given time.
"Running those will lose you half a mile on every gallon," England said. "It just doesn't pencil out to do that."
England recalled the day in 2008 when diesel prices had soared so high that the Utah company's drivers started causing electronic service station pumps to crash as they filled up because the pumps weren't designed to go above $999.99. This time around, the company was determined to be better prepared for high prices.
Every quarter, for instance, the most efficient of its 4,000 drivers wins a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle for accomplishments such as best mileage per gallon or lowest idling time. The company has turned some of its trucks into mobile test stations to assess potential technologies in the field.
"It has allowed us to hone the edge and put the best trucks and best drivers on the road," England said.
Trucking companies and businesses with significant transportation costs were mostly caught unprepared in 2008, when diesel prices jumped more than 46% from January to July to a record national average of $4.76 a gallon. Then the global recession hit.
As hundreds of trucking companies folded, the industry shed nearly 178,000 jobs from January 2008 to December 2009, falling to a total of 1.2 million, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
This time around, with the U.S. average diesel price at nearly $4.15 a gallon as of Monday, trucking industry employment has held steady at 1.3 million since the beginning of the year.
Part of the improved performance can be attributed to a stronger economy and fewer companies competing for business, industry officials say, but also to the extraordinary lengths that companies have gone to reduce their exposure to high fuel prices.
"For trucking companies, $4 diesel is a tipping point," said Sean McNally, spokesman for the American Trucking Assn.
Since 2008, fleets have been overhauled to include the latest diesel trucks, which are more fuel efficient than older models, or have moved to electric or natural-gas rigs, according to a recent analysis by the London research firm Eyefortransport.
Trucking companies have turned to software programs to log speed and engine performance, improve routing and even shut down engines after a pre-determined amount of stationary time to reduce idling, the firm's study found. Drivers are put through training programs that encourage efficient and conservative driving over other considerations.
Double-deck trailers allow more cargo without greatly increasing fuel use. Wide-profile tires offer less rolling resistance, and automatic systems ensure the proper tire inflation. Auxiliary power runs heaters and air conditioners during trucker rest breaks, the report said.
"It has paid off," said Katharine O'Reilly, executive director of Eyefortransport, resulting in fuel savings of 3% to 10%. "They are in a much better position now in terms of financial viability."
Atlanta-based Coca-Cola saved about 1 million gallons in 2011, or about 4.8% of annual fuel consumption, said Steven Saltzgiver, group director of Coca-Cola's North American fleet. More fuel-efficient trucks, including electric and hybrid vehicles, have helped, as has Coca-Cola's "smart driver" education program.
"Before we did this, our trucks were idling 30% of the time," Saltzgiver said. "We first went down to idling 20% of the time. Now we are down below 10%, with an ultimate goal of getting down to 5%."
FedEx is making greater use of "route operations support software" that helps the company save on fuel costs by loading trucks efficiently and mapping optimal delivery routes, spokesman Scott Fiedler said.
FedEx, which uses about 1.5 billion gallons of petroleum-based fuels a year, has improved fleet mileage 15% since 2005, Fiedler said.
"There's no one solution," Fiedler said. "We need to use the right vehicle and the right fuel on the right route."

My beautiful yellow lab Willow, who I rescued back in 2004, is peeing all over my house. I'm constantly cleaning my carpet, scared that my house will smell like dried urine. She can't help it. She's 12 years old (we think!). She has lost control over her bladder. She seems embarrassed. The whole thing is frustrating. But am I going to give her away because of it? No way.
In response to my blog post on March 8, 2012, I Just Wish He Would Have an Affair, someone commented, "You want to get rid of your spouse because he isn't doing what you want, but would you get rid of your kids (or your dog) for the same reason or would you work on the problems?"
I love this comment! We do live in a disposable society. My parents used to pay money to have the vacuum repaired. Today, I think we are more apt to put it out with the garbage and buy a new vacuum cleaner instead of taking the time and making the investment to repair the one we already have.
It is frustrating when things don't work the way they are supposed to, or the way we hope they will. But, there is something to be said for investing the time, the money, the energy, and the emotion into taking something that you value, that perhaps isn't meeting your expectations anymore, and making it into something you can value once again.
You know where I am going with this. Our divorce rate continues to hover around the 50 percent rate. One out of two marriages will reportedly "break." I know many couples do try to repair their relationships. They do invest the time, money, energy and emotion into trying to fix what has broken. And to each of them, I say kudos for at least making the effort to fix what is broken; even if ultimately you aren't successful, you can take solace in the fact that you really tried.
But, having spoken with many couples over the past few years, I am shocked by how many people seem to throw in the towel before sufficiently exhausting all options; namely, valuing the relationship enough and the time already invested in it to see if it can be repaired.
So many people I speak with, both men and women, tell me that their spouse came to them with his or her "mind made up" about wanting a divorce. Period. No discussion. No counseling. Over and done with. These people feel like they haven't even had a chance to try to work on things. A decision was made -- albeit unilaterally -- and that's the end of that.
I'm dreaming here, I know, but wouldn't it be nice if couples tried more diligently to repair the broken things before completely throwing in the towel? Wouldn't it be nice if we valued and respected the "original" or "older" model instead of seeking the latest and greatest model with all the new features? Wouldn't it be nice if the marriage repair-person (aka marriage counselor/minister/therapist) got a call before the divorce attorney? Perhaps I'm dreaming -- or perhaps it's food for thought!
In closing, does anyone out there have a fabulous carpet-cleaning product to recommend that removes both the stain and the odor? I love my sweet Willow and will continue to clean up after her!
More importantly, does anyone out there have a comment about our disposable society -- especially when it comes to relationships? Should we invest the money, time, energy and emotion to fix things, or should we just go for a different model?

Beijing, China -- HUNDREDS of Tibetans who attended an important Buddhist ceremony earlier this year in India have been detained without charge by Chinese security officers on their return to Tibet.

According to family members and human rights groups, this is the first time that Chinese authorities have detained large numbers of Tibetan pilgrims returning from the January ceremony, held every year in northern India.
Many of the pilgrims are elderly and have been detained for more than two months in central Tibet, or what China calls the Tibet Autonomous Region. The detainees are being interrogated and undergoing patriotic re-education classes, and have been ordered to denounce the Dalai Lama, who presided over the ceremony, known as the Kalachakra, say people who have researched the detentions.
The detainees are being held at hotels, schools and military training centres or bases; some are being forced to pay for their lodging and meals.The detentions are expected to stoke resentment among Tibetans towards the Chinese government at a time when tensions across the Tibetan plateau are at the highest in years.
The pilgrims were detained at checkpoints while returning overland via Nepal or while flying into Lhasa, the Tibetan capital.
