Is Your Facebook Page an Indicator of Your Job Performance?

IndianaChamberNot sure why parents are so irked about what?s on their sons?/daughters? Facebook pages. They?re just showing potential employers how extroverted and ? let?s call it "gregarious" ? they can be. The Wall Street Journal wrote an interesting piece on a new study that was actually conducted by the University of Evansville, among others:

Could your Facebook profile be a predictor of job performance?

A new study from Northern Illinois University, the University of Evansville and Auburn University suggests it can.

In an experiment, three "raters"?comprising one university professor and two students?were presented with the Facebook profiles of 56 college students with jobs.

After spending roughly 10 minutes perusing each profile, including photos, wall posts, comments, education and hobbies, the raters answered a series of personality-related questions, such as "Is this person dependable?" and "How emotionally stable is this person?"

Six months later, the researchers matched the ratings against employee evaluations from each of the students? supervisors. They found a strong correlation between job performance and the Facebook scores for traits such as conscientiousness, agreeability and intellectual curiosity.

Raters generally gave favorable evaluations to students who traveled, had more friends and showed a wide range of hobbies and interests. Partying photos didn?t necessarily count against a student; on the contrary, raters perceived the student as extroverted and friendly, says Don Kluemper, the lead researcher and a professor of management at Northern Illinois University.

The findings show that Facebook could be used as a reliable job-screening tool, he says, especially since candidates would have a hard time "faking" their personalities in front of their friends.

The legality of using social-media sites to screen job applicants is murky, as employers could open themselves up to discrimination lawsuits based on race, gender and religion.

Purchasing Cheap and Trustworthy Web Hosting Companies On ...

If you would like to begin an online organization or you desire to enhance your coverage for an current organization then there is nothing greater than creating a internet site. When you have discovered your excellent cheap web site hosting provider and you have a internet site live, you can then promote your internet site address using free or premium strategies such as pay-per-click or on social networks. Although its not an easy job to build, there is a lot of approaches in which you can minimize the sum of time you invest creating your internet site as you can outsource most of the operation as there are literally millions of freelancers that would settle for a tiny payment for completing web site layout or marketing.

Just before you think about creating a internet site, you must first lookup for a cheap but highly reliable and secure web site hosting supplier to make sure you have the very best groundwork on which to create your online organization. There is a lot of reduced quality providers that it can at times be hard to find a supplier that can not only offer high high quality features, but the packages must be obtainable at a price tag you can afford. There is a lot of approaches in which you can find the very best suppliers such as browsing online message boards, chat rooms, webmaster communities, web site hosting review websites or by searching for reviews of certain providers on google, yahoo or msn.

You need to expect to shell out all around 20 per year for a high high quality web site hosting supplier, but thats quite low-cost considering that a lot of providers will also offer a free domain name as part of this cost inside particular packages. If you shell out a monthly charge for your low-cost hosting service, you might find out that you might also have to shell out further funds for a domain name so its constantly very best to shell out for a yearly plan as you will gain much more benefits. Domains can cost between 2 to 25 per year, so if you can find a cheap but highly reliable provider that will consist of a domain registration then its a deal really worth obtaining if you ask me. Dont purchase the very first package that you find as you might be missing out on essential attributes, and the most affordable is not constantly the very best as the saying goes, you get what you shell out for, although a lot of low-cost businesses who provide high quality web site hosting businesses can rival the features presented by higher expense solutions, so dont be frightened to try a low-cost firm.

There are a lot of features that you will want to look out for which would consist of electronic mail features, mysql databases, sub domains, online backup facilities, live help and free internet site creating software. These essential features will allow you to build your personal internet site with out any expertise as most providers are aimed at newbies, so you will have ample capabilities to create your personal internet site although i would suggest that you outsource your web development to a professional as you dont want a rubbish website to advertise your online organization. A great looking internet site is essential to the results of your organization online as people will be attracted to your services with a vibrant, straight-forward to navigate internet site, although if you have a bad internet site, people will view your service as bad and will quickly depart your internet site.

Usually ask skilled website owners for guidance as there will be millions of people who will be inclined to point you in the right direction if you really feel that you are not comfortable making a selection of which cheap web hosting firm you will make investments in. The webmaster message boards are a wonderful useful resource for connecting with the most skilled online business owners and will permit you to make a greater selection. If you use the research engines in the proper way, you will be confident to uncover any filth on a certain provider, but be mindful of what you believe as a lot of people will try to decieve you on the world wide web, so make sure you are finding the guidance from a reliable online person.

Dying in Christ

"From dust you came and to dust you shall return."

It's Ash Wednesday again...probably the most well-attended non-obligatory day in the Church year. I believe that for many Catholics Ash Wednesday has taken on the traditional spirit of New Years - a time to reflect, repent, and refocus on the important aspects of life.
As a daughter, a wife and a mother, I?ve discovered that throughout the journey of our faith life, we have opportunities to either live as Christ teaches or turn to another teacher, whatever or whoever that may be.

I learned my first lesson about dying in Christ around the age of 18 when my parents became foster parents to at-risk infants. You?ll most likely find my 50 year old mother in her rocking chair, priming a feeding pump, or in a waiting room at a hospital or therapy clinic.

We weren?t always a foster family. We were an average family with three daughters. My mother had always wanted more, but after some serious health diagnoses she accepted God?s plan for the 5 of us. A registered nurse turned stay-at-home mom, she kept her nursing license current ?just in case?. Though she had always wanted to do foster care, my dad wasn?t so sure. In 2002, our parish hosted a ministry fair that included a local social service agency looking for foster and adoptive parents. My dad?s heart softened and God?s seed began to germinate. They began the preparation courses. After a cross-country move and a few less than Godly obstacles, they completed their licensure as foster parents.

We have had more babies than you can count on both hands, each one with their own need, their own family, and their own lesson for us.

When this process began, I had my feelings of replacement and frustration. I was the first out of the house and even before I was gone there was someone there to take my place. Our first little pixie, who to this day has a piece of my heart, took my mom away from me during a time of great transition to adulthood. The close relationship mom and I had built seemed, at best, an afterthought. It put a strain on my relationship with my dad who became the buffer for my frustration, and with my sister who has always been my mom?s ultimate champion.

As the years have passed and my own family has grown, I have been in a constant process of prayer and conversion. God offers me the patience and grace I need to die to myself and know that this is what the example of Jesus and the sacrament of the Eucharist is all about. While I can?t honestly write that I am on board with the choice and its implications all the time, I know that something that requires this much love and this much sacrifice must be a call from God. While I selfishly worry about my children?s grandparents and the time they have to spend with them and with each other, I trust that Mom and Dad are in constant discernment. I know that as God calls them to this, He also provides the time and nourishment they need to be sustained in their vocation. Today, I am so blessed to say that my children will never know a limited definition of family.

Luke 6:17-45

And he came down with them and stood on a stretch of level ground. A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region o Tyre and Sidon came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and even those who were tormented by unclean spirits were cured. Everyon in the crowd sought to touch him because power came forth from him and healed them all.

Sermon on the Plain

And raising his eyes towardy his disciples he said:

"Blessed are you who are poor,

for the kingdom of God is yours.

Blessed are you who are now hungry,

for you will be satisfied.

Blessed are you who are now weeping,

for you will laugh.

Blessed are you when people hate you,

and when they exclude and insult you,

and denounce your name as evil

on account of the Son of Man

Rejoice and leap for joy on that day!

Behold, your reward will be great in heaven.

For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way.

But woe to you who are rich,

for you have received your consolation.

But woe to you who are filled now,

for you will be hungry.

Woe to you who laugh now,

for you will grieve and weep.

Woe to you when all speak well of you,?

for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way.

Love of Enemies

But to you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic. Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you. For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Event sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount. But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.?And he told them a parable, ?Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother?s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?How can you say to your brother, ?Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,? when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother?s eye.

The Sermon on the Plain is a good summary of Jesus? teachings.

Scripture asks us regularly to die to ourselves and live in Christ.

The past 8 weeks of my life have been yet another lesson in dying in Christ. Having recently moved, I was fixated on the words ?Christmas at home? this year. I had visions of stockings, warm cookies, and Christmas crafts dancing my head. And then the doctor said the word, ?cancer? to my mother-in-law the first week of December. The potholders hit the floor just about as fast as I hit my knees.

The words ?career path? had been on my heart and in my sights until the second week of December when the thermometer read 103 degrees and my beautiful children couldn?t keep anything down. I spent as much time on my knees cleaning as I did praying. After two weeks, no career success has ever felt as good as the moment the fever breaks and your child sleeps comfortably.

The words ?Superbowl? and ?finished basement? beckoned us into a January lull until a frantic phone call from my father with words like, ?complications?, ?pain management? and ?6-8 week recovery? sent me rushing to the aid of my mother and foster siblings. In place of a Superbowl, I got a bowl of spaghettios. Instead of basement moulding, I got to clean moldy food out of the refrigerator. Instead of a planning the Confirmation of 50 young people, I found myself living mine.

Things don?t often go as we think they should and as much as I hate to admit it, each of these moments were moments when I found frustration before I found Christ. The frustration stems from a place of topsy-turvy priorities. It was in the second moment where I realized that I had let something else be my guide instead of Christ, and that I had to commit myself to a conversion of heart with Christ as my guide.

We all have moments when we allow someone or something else be our guide, leader and teacher. Perhaps it is the people we spend time with, our families, our society, our government or president, the promise of comfort or money or power.

I?d like you to take a moment and ask yourself, how have I failed to live up to the teachings of Christ? How do I need to die to myself in order to know the joy of living with Christ?

God promises us something beyond death. In dying to ourselves, God promises us life. This cookie is an Easter tradition in my family. The resurrection cookie is a reminder that beyond death is something greater - the empty tomb and the resurrection. The resurrection is the reason we fast - that we are better able to feast on the life and sustance the Lord gives to us through his Son and Spirit.

Opening GOP debate, Romney pounces on Santorum

MESA, Ariz. (AP) ? Republicans Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum are sparring in what is likely to be the final debate before the next slate of states has nominating contests, trading barbs on Washington spending and borrowing.

Romney on Wednesday said government doubled in size while Santorum served in the House and Senate. Romney notes that Santorum voted to increase the nation's borrowing limit five times without corresponding budget cuts, as well as voting to send tax dollars to Planned Parenthood.

By contrast, Romney says he balanced budgets during his four years as Massachusetts governor and at the helm of the Olympic Games.

Santorum is not letting Romney have a pass on it. He says that Romney supported last year's vote to increase the nation's borrowing limit to avoid a government default.

The Changing Faces of the Funeral Industry

This article was originally posted on MySendoff.com and reposted here with permission.

In the last decade the funeral industry has been undergoing some dramatic changes, particularly with the growth of female funeral professionals spearheading heightened awareness in personalized funerals, emerging technologies and the funeral industry?s accelerating change. Mysendoff.com introduces Linda Darby-Sempsrott as an excellent example of the growing influence women are bringing to the industry. Read more to learn how this progressive influence is shaping the future of funerals.

Prior to the formalization of the funeral industry in the mid-19th century, very little documentation had been kept in regard to the care of the dead and while the history of undertaking as portrayed in early funeral industry trade journals is a history in which men were the precursors of the modern-day funeral director, it was women who were the original entrepreneurs called upon to prepare and anoint the bodies of the deceased.

But something happened during the mid-19th century that changed all that. It was the commercialization of that dreaded task of death that soon required professional undertaking and it was known as the funeral industry. Mortuary science became formalized; a skilled trade that required an education in biology, chemistry and anatomy, and it was assumed by trades? professionals, composed of men.

Once, long ago, women made up a small majority in comparison to a large majority of men working within the industry. But today, roughly 57% of new enrolments within mortuary schools are women, with 1605 women enrolling as opposed to the 1219 men who enrolled in 2010.

So, what was it that changed during the course of half a century?

Linda Darby-Sempsrott of Sunset Funeral Homes offered her answer that ?Women are the planners ? not that I?m trying to sound gender specific, but it is a little bit. In many households, the women are the ones who plan the birthday parties; they?re the ones who plan the events; they?re the ones who do the core meetings of these things. It?s what we do, it?s who we are, it?s what we enjoy ? it?s how we connect and I think the connecting piece in the funeral services is somewhat missing.

?We?ve allowed ourselves (the funeral service) to become a transaction. Funeral services are one of the most personal things that you can do in your life. There has to be a heart connection in order for it to be fulfilled helpfully. Women understand and women get that because we?re more connected in that way ? and I?m not saying men can?t be. I know many great male funeral directors, but sometimes they want to fix it and you can?t fix grief, you have to allow it to take place naturally.?

So, with funerals in an evolutionary state of flux, from their beginnings as in-home family arranged affairs to the independently owned family funeral homes, the death-care industry has been in a steady stream of constant motion. With Baby Boomers streamlining the change through enshrining self-esteem, along with their increased due diligence of do-it-yourself funerals and exuberant celebrations that reflect upon a life lived rather than a life to mourn, combined with the Me Generation?s increased sense of entitlement, dream-the-impossible-dream and more direct personality, 20 years from now, funerals aren?t going to be what they once were.

In fact, Darby-Sempsrott believes the sky?s the limit. ?We?re all unique in our own way and each life celebration should be unique to each individual. I don?t think each funeral should be the same.?

For Darby-Sempsrott, she?s been a trailblazer in the field of funerary celebrations. With a roster that has seen her actively involved in numerous de facto organizations, promoting memorialization and aiding in the continuous growth of women in the industry, Darby-Sempsrott has served on the Board of the Illinois Cemetery Association, the Board of the Arizona Funeral Directors Association; has sat on the Illinois State?s Comptroller?s Cemetery Advisory Board for two years; co-chaired the Women in Funeral Service Scholarship program for the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association (ICCFA) and is also the CEO of Trigard Vaults/Greenwood Plastics, and along with her siblings, co-owner of six funeral homes and a memorial park.

Even with an impressive list of achievements, Darby-Sempsrott found her introduction into the funerary industry a smooth transition. Since 1960, the Sunset Memorial Park in Danville, Illinois had been a family owned cemetery, purchased when Darby-Sempsrott?s father was 22-years-old, and like many family owned funeral practitioners, Darby-Sempsrott grew up with the presence of death and the vulnerability of mortality. Upon graduating from Illinois State University in ?84, she began her career within the industry.

?When I graduated from college, I saw a niche that I could fill,? Darby-Sempsrott said. ?I believe that we can impact our world greatly by what we do for a living, so that?s always drawn me to it. (But) I noticed that sometimes we don?t try very hard. There?s so much more to what we could be doing to celebrate people?s lives and what we?ve done in our pasts. It?s always been a passion with my family ? to raise the bar in funeral services; to give people what they really want and what they really need.?

To this extent, Darby-Sempsrott is talking about personalizations and how, beneath the veneer of stability, the funeral industry is undergoing a rapid change, and that change is the exit of a great generation ? the Baby Boomers. With the first of America?s 70 million or so Baby Boomers well on their way to reaching 65 years, it means a great majority of people heading into their golden years. And as Baby Boomers reach that age when it?s prudent to plan funerals for loved ones, as well as themselves, their expectations are changing also.

This shouldn?t come as a surprise when reflecting upon the Boomer Generation. They changed the way we looked at love, sex and work, so there really isn?t an exception when it comes to death. Just as they?ve built a life out of taking the path less travelled, the Boomers aren?t going to settle with just any ordinary, cookie-cutter funeral. In fact, they?ve already shown an inclination to leading the way and pushing for more personalized and creative memorial services.

Darby-Sempsrott recognizes this change. While she?s seen her share of personalized funerals, she also feels that there could be more. But the problem with personalized funerals, is that many people still aren?t aware that funeral homes are more than willing to accommodate the bereaved with what they may want.

?I spoke to a lady,? Darby-Sempsrott said. ?And this is really sad because she didn?t go to a funeral home because she didn?t think a funeral home would do it ? but she told me her family had a funeral on a yacht. How unique is that? So I asked her, which funeral home she used and she said, ?I didn?t even know a funeral home could do that.? Broke my heart ? how sad is that, that this woman didn?t think a funeral home would do that for her. Low and behold, a huge red flag for me and for our industry ? we need to get that message out there that we?ll do it (personalized funerals).

?We need to be listening to and educating (people) so that they can make a good and informed decision. I don?t think we?ve done a good enough job of that, so I would like to see that change. At the time of a death, it really is hard for family members and friends to be really, really creative. So if we stop and ask a few questions ahead of time, even if you put it in your back pocket for a while, until you have an opportunity to think about ? you?re allowed to be more creative (with it) ahead of time.?

With a lack of awareness outside the funeral industry in promoting celebrations that recognize a life ? a life celebration that promotes more personalized memorialization ? being the crutch of the funeral industry, Darby-Sempsrott firmly asserts, ?(Personalized funerals) gets us out from the back of the chapels and into the front of the chapels and says, ?Hey! You lived a life and you impacted people along the away, or I hope that I did in some way, shape and form ? and I hope I made enough of a difference in your life for you to come and celebrate me.?

This may be progressive thinking on Darby-Sempsrott?s part, but it really is something she attributes to her out-of-the-box rationale. For Darby-Sempsrott, personalization has a place in the grieving process that she believes helps. To adapt to these changing perceptions, even Trigard Vaults/Greenwood Plastics have taken to personalizing their burial vaults with a celebratory ceremony known as The Healing Tree.

?The Healing Tree is an interactive burial vault,? Darby-Sempsrott said. ?One of the things that we?ve noticed is being at the gravesite is probably one of the hardest times, because it is at that time that you?re no longer with your loved one, and that your loved one is no longer going to be within your sight. What we wanted to do was create a ceremony at the gravesite that would allow family members the ability to take something away with them.?

Despite Trigards? efforts in raising the awareness of personalized funerals, Darby-Sempsrott believes it?ll still be a grassroots effort to garner acceptance, but she remains firmly confident it will only grow in popularity.

?We really don?t have a great spokesperson representing us.? Darby-Sempsrott admits. ?It would be helpful if there was someone out there leading our charge, saying what we do for a living is so important. I don?t want our generation (of funeral professionals) to be lost because we didn?t do what we needed to do in order to keep the industry and the memories alive. We need to get out from behind the chapels and get out in front of the people, and have the hard conversation that we have to have in order to get people talking about personalization.?

In spite of negative perceptions that the funeral industry may have gotten from the world at large, Darby-Sempsrott maintains, ?When someone says, ?Oh my gosh, your a funeral director?? I say, yeah, I am ? I get to help people heal.?

Sellers: Interviewing Several Real Estate Agents is a Must | The ...

One of the most difficult things a person will do in his or her life is to sell a home. Mentally, it can be tough due to the memories and sentiment we can feel toward a home, but it is also hard physically to sell a home in the housing market we are currently going through. Today, a home seller must pull out all the stops to try and get close to his asking price. One of the keys to selling a home is to ensure the best real estate agent is hired to move the property quickly.

The best real estate agent not only needs to be an expert in the area where the home is located, but must also be a great fit on more of a personal basis with the seller. The real estate agent will have to answer all of the seller?s questions, make suggestions for staging the house and be an expert in property values in the area to ensure the home is priced correctly. This is a lot to deal with unless the seller and real estate agent have a great relationship from the get-go.

The importance of this relationship is why it is essential that the seller interviews several real estate agents prior to deciding on one. This is a transaction of such financial importance that it is best not to go with a friend or the first real estate agent whose poster is seen. It may sound old-fashioned, but a seller must get along with the agent to ensure an agreement can be made in how to properly market the home. Once the interviews are complete, the seller can pick the real estate agent that will be the best fit for his situation. This is true in every market be it San Francisco or Washington D.C.; the relationship with the real estate agent is the key to moving a home in a timely manner.

(AP Photo/Steve Helber, File)

(AP) ? Jurors in the murder trial of a former University of Virginia lacrosse player began deliberating Wednesday whether he battered his ex-girlfriend to death in a drunken, jealous rage or if his intent to talk with her spiraled out of control, leaving her bleeding and dying in her bedroom.

The jury has been presented those two versions of what happened on the night of May 2, 2010, hearing from nearly 60 witnesses over nine days.

George Huguely V of Chevy Chase, Md., could face life in prison if convicted of murder in the death of 22-year-old Yeardley Love, whose body was found in the early hours of May 3, 2010. Jurors can also consider lesser charges, including manslaughter and second-degree murder.

Love, a lacrosse player on the women's team, was found face down on her pillow. Her right eye was swollen and bruised, she had marks on her chest that suggested she was grabbed and had injuries around her jaw and inside her mouth and neck. Jurors heard several potentially lethal consequences of such injuries. A coroner concluded the young woman from suburban Baltimore died of blunt force trauma.

Less than 90 minutes into its deliberations, the jury sought clarification on the word "reason." Circuit Judge Edward L. Hogshire advised jurors common usage would apply. Anticipating more questions, he asked attorneys not to wander too far from the courtroom.

The final 15 minutes the two seniors spent together likely will be critical to the jury's deliberations.

In a police interrogation video viewed by jurors, Huguely said he went to Love's apartment to talk about their sputtering, two-year relationship and she "freaked out" when he broke into her room. Their encounter quickly turned physical, with Huguely admitting he may have shaken her but insisting he didn't grab her neck or punch her. He also claimed she repeatedly banged her head on the bedroom wall.

A medical expert for the defense testified that Love likely smothered, her face buried in her own blood-dampened pillow. Huguely's defense team has also suggested Love's death was the result of drinking and a prescription drug she took for attention-deficit disorder. A coroner said both substances were in her body but not in potentially lethal doses.

The prosecution paints a much more sinister scenario.

Huguely, now 24, went to her apartment less than one week after he sent her a threatening email about her relationship with a North Carolina lacrosse player.

In the email, Huguely wrote that when he found out about the relationship, "I should have killed you."

Prosecutor Dave Chapman portrayed Huguely as intent on controlling Love. He came to her apartment to physically impose his will, kicking a hole in her bedroom door and reaching in and unlocking the door, the prosecutor said.

"That's the beginning of terror, ladies and gentlemen," said Chapman, who seemed to sob as he began closing arguments Saturday. "It's just unimaginable what that woman went through and you know it."

Then 210 pounds and nearly a foot taller than Love, Huguely battered her face and likely held her down by her neck and covered her mouth, the prosecutor said.

Prosecution medical experts said her death, which came about two hours after Huguely left, could have been caused by a loss of blood flow from the carotid artery. They also testified about bruising on her brain ? the result of her brain striking the interior of her skull ? and blood pooling near her brain stem. The latter was likely caused by a wrenching or torqueing of the head, experts testified.

Chapman said Huguely left Love's apartment with her laptop computer, tossing it in a trash bin in an apparent attempt to hide incriminating emails.

The alleged computer theft is critical in the prosecution's case. Chapman is seeking a conviction on felony murder, saying Love was fatally injured during a robbery.

In his closing arguments, defense attorney Francis McQ. Lawrence described Huguely as hulking, hard-drinking jock but no killer. He acknowledged Huguely had an unintended, accidental role in Love's death, arguing for a finding of involuntary manslaughter and a 10-year prison term.

Huguely, a member of a well-to-do Washington family, was a "boy athlete" and he and Love lived in what Lawrence described as a "lacrosse ghetto" where drinking, sexually charged relationships and emotional outbursts were the norm among elite athletes.

Huguely now bears little resemblance to the stocky 6-foot, Division I athlete of nearly two years ago. He is now about 30-40 pounds lighter and pasty from his time in jail awaiting trial. He did not testify during the trial.

Besides the first-degree murder count, Huguely is charged with two counts of felony breaking and entering, theft and murder in the commission of a robbery.

If jurors return guilty verdicts, the trial will shift almost immediately to the sentencing phase. It will include opening statements, witnesses and closing arguments.

The jury will then deliberate the sentence.

Va. lawmakers scale back controversial abortion bill

Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell says he wants amendments to an ultrasound-before-abortion bill.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at?6:35 p.m. ET: RICHMOND, Va. -- State Republican legislators have scrapped a bitterly contested proposal to require women seeking abortions to undergo invasive ultrasound imaging.

Shortly after Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell announced his opposition?to the?Republican bill, the state House on Wednesday approved a substitute version that still mandates an ultrasound but makes the transvaginal procedure optional.

The House of Delegates voted 65-32 for the watered-down version. Under the substitute, women would still be required to have an ultrasound before an abortion to determine the gestational age, but women subject to a transvaginal procedure would be able to decline, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

That likely dooms the measure.

The amended bill now returns to the Senate where its sponsor, Sen. Jill Vogel, said she will strike the legislation.

"There are moments when you are a legislator when you have to stop and you have to have a moment of real conscience,? Vogel said, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. ?I sort of had that moment this morning considering the outcome and the fate of this bill.???

Vogel said after hearing from doctors and other constituents that she felt she could not did not ?carry the bill in its current form.?

The House action came moments after McDonnell -- facing outrage from women and appeals from GOP moderates -- announced he?was opposing the original bill requiring vaginal probes.

McDonnell, a social conservative who says he is "pro-life," appealed for amendments to the bitterly contested legislation. In a transvaginal ultrasound, a wand-like device is inserted and used to send out sound waves.

Until this week, McDonnell and his aides had said the governor would sign the measure if it made it to his desk.

"Over the past days I have discussed the specific language of the proposed legislation with other governors, physicians, attorneys, legislators, advocacy groups, and citizens. It is apparent that several amendments to the proposed legislation are needed to address various medical and legal issues which have arisen," the governor said in a written statement.

Among the amendments?McDonnell proposed: to explicitly state that no woman will have to undergo a transvaginal ultrasound involuntarily, and that only an external ultrasound will be required to satisfy the requirements to determine gestational age.

The bill had already won Senate passage. Opponents say it amounts to the state violating a woman's privacy. Supporters say it is medically prudent to determine fetal gestational age and, perhaps, discourage abortions.

Related: Texas begins enforcing strict anti-abortion sonogram law

While the original Virginia bill does require an ultrasound, it does not require the woman to view it, making it less strict than laws in Texas and Oklahoma, according to The New York Times.

More than 1,000 people, most of them women, on Monday locked arms and stood mute outside the Virginia State Capitol to protest the bill and other anti-abortion legislation under consideration by state lawmakers.

Comedian Jon Stewart poked fun at the measure Tuesday night on Comedy Central?s ?Daily Show.?

AP source: Obama seeks 28 percent corp. tax rate

President Barack Obama, accompanied by Vice President Joe Biden, talks about the importance of the payroll-tax cut and jobless-benefits extension compromise that bi-partisan House and Senate conferees reached last week, Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on the White House complex in Washington. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is proposing to cut the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 28 percent and wants an even lower effective rate for manufacturers, a senior administration official says, as the White House lays down an election-year marker in the debate over tax policy.

In turn, corporations would have to give up dozens of loopholes and subsidies that they now enjoy. Corporations with overseas operations would also face a minimum tax on their foreign earnings.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Wednesday was to detail aspects of Obama's proposed overhaul of the corporate tax system, a plan the president outlined in general terms in his State of the Union speech last month.

Chances of accomplishing such change in the tax system are slim in a year dominated mostly with presidential and congressional elections. But for Obama, the proposal is part of a larger tax plan that is central to his re-election strategy.

The corporate tax plan dovetails with Obama's call for raising taxes on millionaires and maintaining current rates on individuals making $200,000 or less.

The 35 percent nominal corporate tax rate is the highest in the world after Japan. But deductions, credits and exemptions allow many corporations to pay taxes at a much lower rate.

Under the framework proposed by the administration, the rate cuts, closed loopholes and the minimum tax on overseas earning would result in no increase to the deficit.

That means that many businesses that slip through loopholes or enjoy subsidies and pay an effective tax rate that is substantially less than the 35 percent corporate tax could end up paying more under Obama's plan. Others, however, would pay less while some would simply benefit from a more simplified system.

The official said the Obama plan aims to help U.S. businesses, especially manufacturers who face strong international competition. Obama's plan would lower the effective rate for manufacturers to 25 percent while emphasizing development of clean energy systems. The administration official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe what the administration will do.

The New York Times first reported details of the plan in its online edition early Wednesday.

Many members of both parties have said they favor overhauling the nation's individual and corporate tax systems, which they complain have rates that are too high and are riddled with too many deductions.

The corporate tax debate has made its way into the presidential contest. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has called for a 25 percent rate, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., would cut the corporate tax rate to 12.5 percent, and former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., would exempt domestic manufacturers from the corporate tax and halve the top rate for other businesses.

While Obama has been promoting various aspects of his economic agenda in personal appearances and speeches, the decision to leave the corporate tax plan to the Treasury Department to unveil signaled its lower priority.

What's more, the administration's framework leaves much for Congress to decide ? a deliberate move by the administration to encourage negotiations but which also doesn't subject the plan to detailed scrutiny.

Obama's plan is not as ambitious as a House Republican proposal that would lower the corporate rate to 25 percent.

Still, Obama has said corporate tax rates are too high and has proposed eliminating tax breaks for American companies that move jobs and profits overseas. He also has proposed giving tax breaks to U.S. manufacturers, to firms that return jobs to this country and to companies that relocate to some communities that have lost big employers.

Geithner told a House committee last week that the administration wants to create more incentives for corporations to invest in the United States.

"We want to bring down the rate, and we think we can, to a level that's closer to the average of that of our major competitors," Geithner told the House Ways and Means Committee.

White House economic adviser Gene Sperling has advocated a minimum tax on global profits. Currently many corporations do not invest overseas profits in the United States to avoid the 35 percent tax rate.

How to baby-proof your home theater

By Sarah Cavill, Techlicious.com

We?ve all heard it: The clatter of the remote control hitting the hard wood floor. The grind of the disc tray on the DVD player being forcibly closed, often with something in it other than a disc. The gleeful laugh of a toddler that has our phone and is running away with it. Many issues, when it comes to protecting our technology or home theater systems are just annoyances, but others are genuine safety concerns ? for your child and your electronics.

Fortunately, there are many easy to use baby-proofing measures you can take to keep your new crawler or worse, your new climber, safe and sound while also protecting your technology.

Safety 1st

1. Secure your TV
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, between 8,000 and 10,000 children are treated in emergency rooms each year because of tip-over injuries, and televisions are major offenders. Flat-screen televisions are front- heavy and often perched on small lightweight bases. To carefully secure your TV you can secure it with a Prograde Flat Screen TV Lock.?($29.32 on Amazon.com).

2. Protect?your components
All those flashing lights, sliding trays, and buttons ? how they love buttons ? make components like Blu-ray players, DVRs, cable boxes and iPod docks very tempting for sticky fingers. You can get an entertainment unit that holds your TV and electronics, with glass or frosted doors that close, like the TOBO TV panel with media storage ($319 on?Ikea.com). You can secure the doors with childproof locks and secure the unit to the wall. Most remotes will work through glass.

Sewell

For those that don?t work through glass, or if your unit has wooden doors, you can get an external remote sensor like the Sewell InjectIR ($44.95 on Amazon.com) that sees IR commands from all of your remotes and transmits them to your components via HDMI (see the illustration).

You can also get a clear plastic shield that covers the front of your components. The DVD/Stereo Guard by Parent Units ($12.74 on Amazon.com) keeps wee hands from pushing buttons, but is easily removable for adult access.

3.?Cover your outlets and power strips
Though the standard plug covers are quite handy and inconspicuous for plugs you rarely use, they are finger-breaking to remove. A product like the Kidco Outlet Plug Cover ($7.25 on Amazon.com), keeps kids off of the plug, allows you to shorten the cord and it?s easily opened for use. Since most of us are plugging in our entire lives, power strips are an issue as well. A Power Strip Cover from Safety 1st ($7.99 on Amazon.com) keep curious hands from yanking at the plugs.

Wiremold

4. Organize your wires
Hide cords behind cord concealers like the Wiremold CordMate II Cord Organizer ($24.99 on Crutchfield.com) if you?re running cables along a wall. Directly behind the TV, manage cables with zip ties or cover them with a wrap like the Monster Cable-It Wire Management System, which comes in three colors and several lengths ($12.20 for 8 feet on Amazon.com).

5. Protect your remote control
The most oft-dropped item deserves a little protection too. A Remote Control Cover from Remote Wraps ($15.99 on RemoteWraps.com) protects the device, the device?s battery door, and your furniture from getting banged up.

There are many baby-proofing companies that will come in to your home and assess your needs. Make sure when researching a company that they provide full service for home theaters, and not just plugs and cords.

Tohoku grim reminder of potential for Pacific Northwest North American megaquake

ScienceDaily (Feb. 21, 2012) ? The March 11, 2011 Tohoku earthquake is a grim reminder of the potential for another strong-motion mega-earthquake along the Pacific Northwest coast, geophysicist John Anderson of the University of Nevada, Reno told members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in a lecture at their annual conference in Vancouver, B.C. February 19.

"The Cascadia fault line, which runs from southern Canada all the way to Northern California, could have much stronger ground-motions than those observed in Japan," Anderson, a professor of geophysics, said. "The Tohoku earthquake, while only half the length of Cascadia, is an analog for an earthquake that could happen here in the northwestern United States and southwestern British Columbia."

Both Japan and Cascadia sit above subduction zones that dip at a low angle beneath the land. One might consider them roughly mirror images, he said.

"In this mirror image, one can see that if the same earthquake occurred in Cascadia, the fault would rupture to a significant distance inland, since the Cascadia trench sits much closer to the coastline than the trench off the coast of Japan, Anderson said. "Some models predict that a Cascadia earthquake will not rupture so far under the land, but if it does, the data from the Tohoku earthquake predict stronger ground motions along our west coast than those seen in Japan. In any case, the ground motions from Tohoku are critical for understanding the seismic hazard here in Vancouver, and in Seattle, and Portland, and Eureka and all points in between."

In Cascadia, the last great earthquake occurred on January 26, 1700. Based on the size of the tsunami, the magnitude of that earthquake was about magnitude 9.0.

"Although the average interval is apparently larger, earthquakes of this size in the past may have recurred with intervals of as small as about 300 years. So it would not be a scientific surprise if such an event were to occur in the near future," Anderson said. "If you live in the Pacific northwest, look at the videos of Tohoku as a reminder to be prepared for an earthquake and tsunami."

Anderson, who studies strong ground-motions, spent nine months recently as a visiting research professor at the Tokyo University, home of one of the world's premier seismology programs. Before coming to the University of Nevada, Reno in 1998, he earned his doctorate in geophysics from Columbia University and has held appointments at the California Institute of Technology, University of Southern California and the University of California at San Diego.

In his presentation at the AAAS conference, about the strong ground motions in the Tohoku earthquake, he discusses the significance of the data, the effects of the source on the nature of the data, the effects of site response, and some discussion of the engineering effects.

"There have of course been other mega-earthquakes, but this is by far the best-recorded," he said. "The Japanese event will undoubtedly stand as the best-recorded megaquake for a long time to come, both because megaquakes are rare and because no place is as well instrumented as the islands of Japan."

For instance, the strong ground motions that could be generated along Cascadia, unfortunately, might not be observed nearly as thoroughly, since the strong motion instrumentation in most of the Cascadia region is sparse compared to Japan.

Anderson said that in spite of the occasional records with high accelerations, damage to structures from the shaking in Tohoku was reduced by high building standards, and because the ground velocities caused by the earthquake were not high enough to cause damage even at sites with peak acceleration over 1g.

Matchmaker, matchmaker: Fights for ?Mayhem,? Evan Dunham and Eddie Alvarez

Though MMA's spring schedule is not as dizzying as its winter pace, there are plenty of fight cards that need filling. To that end:

-- Jason "Mayhem" Miller will take on C.B. Dollaway at UFC 146 on Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas. This is Miller's first fight since losing the Michael Bisping at "The Ultimate Fighter" season 14 finale. Dollaway has been finished in his last two bouts, a TKO to Jared Hamman and a KO to Mark Munoz.

-- Evan Dunham and Edson Barboza will also meet at UFC 146. Dunham just fought at UFC on Fox 2, scoring a win over Nik Lentz. Known for his powerful striking, Barboza has never lost. His knockout of Terry Etim at UFC 142 was called one of the best knockouts in UFC history.

-- In Bellator, Eddie Alvarez and Shinya Aoki are expected to meet in April. Alvarez was submitted by an Aoki heel hook in 2008. After that loss, he won seven straight before losing a classic title bout to Michael Chandler. Aoki is currently holds the DREAM lightweight belt.

Who will win these bouts? Talk to us in the comments, on Facebook, or on Twitter.

While rates of interracial relationships are increasing in country after country throughout the West, the undeniable reality of institutionalized inequity and personal prejudice continues to leave room for doubt in the minds of many.

First, a disclaimer: scientists continue to insist that there is only one human race and many different ethnicities. But, within the popular vernacular, the term race serves as a code-word depicting the expression of visible difference between people of different geographic origins. So I will use the term in that context throughout this article.

In Canada, there was a point recently when the rates of interracial marriage rose?30% in 5 years.?In the United States, African American men date and marry outside of their ethnicity at a higher rate than African American women. Across the board and no matter the ethnic group or country of origin, 1 out of every 7 marriages in the United States is interracial. ?In fact, among the youngest generation of Americans, the Millennials, acceptance of mixed relationships is as high as 85%, which is a testimony to the increasing tolerance of the young. As 25% of the American population, the younger generation plays a large role in determining current and future trends for the nation and the world. ?Increasing acceptance and engagement in interracial relationships is perhaps a sign that tolerance levels are rising.

While immigration is rising in Canada and other countries, immigration has slowed in the United States. The economic downturn has resulted in more people moving to countries where the economies are booming rather than stagnating or regressing. The increased diversity that the rise in immigration has resulted in has probably contributed to the rise in interracial relationships in Canada. In the United States, the current level of diversity and increasing cross-cultural interaction have led to a situation whereby the social strictures prohibiting interracial relationships have made less sense in the daily lives of people who interact with different ethnic and racial groups constantly. Familiarity with people of different origins breaks down the social and societal barriers as the realization that people are the same no matter what they look like overcomes familial and cultural taboos.

And yet, while the instances of interracial relationships are on the increase, certain problems still arise. As with all marriages, divorce rates remain high and, in the United States, these rates are higher for interracial couples than for any others. There also remain psychological stigmas within specific groups that affect interracial couples. Also in the United States, white women who engage in interracial relationships often receive more psychological distress, while black men?similarly?engaged receive less. Within the Black community, there remains a simmering resentment on the part of some to interracial relationships, especially within the ranks of black women. Even as progress continues, there remain inflammatory and conflicting beliefs and stereotypes that continue to dog groups of people in the arena of interracial relationships.

Within minority groups in particular, the more difficult social stigmas remain centered upon engaging in interracial relationships with whites, as opposed to members of other minority groups. Within the black community in general, entering into relationships with individuals of Mexican, American Indian, or members of any east or south Asian group is generally perceived as being?better, or more acceptable than entering into congress with white men or women. This has to do particularly with that groups peculiar history and millennia-long interrelationship with Europe and its descendants. The historical imposition of slavery and the continuing institutionalization of privilege based upon race that has ossified due to its hoary standardization within the implicit structures of eurocentrism and the Western cultural impetus continue to play their part in forming the attitudes of current generations of black Americans.

In a time of increased interracial interaction and a more fuller recognition at the societal level of the innate equality of all individuals regardless of race, creed or circumstance, the leavings of discrimination and marginalized social status continue to echo within the inter-generational instructions passed down from parents to children. Warnings regarding the dangers of unwarranted trust and racial scapegoating, of perceived equality and implicit inequality, of responsibility to one?s people and selling out. The remains of 400 years of American Slavery, the Black Codes and Jim Crow?continue to bear bitter fruit in the memories of the genetically-mixed inheritors of the Black Experience. While the politics of race and difference die a slow and painful death on a national stage where a black President pays little attention to the plight of ?his people? and moderates and extremists of a conservative bent take advantage by engaging in traditional and seditious methods of political one-upmanship, out-group ostracization and voter disenfranchisement, individuals who disregard these larger scale power plays are considered to be foolish or dangerously unaware of trends that seem to point to a deepening of resentment and victimization of traditional minority groups. An old and familiar pattern.

And yet, despite these seeming regressions in political interplay and adherence to out-dated and separatist ideologies and methodologies, within the corpus of many Western nations, attitudes have changed and continue to morph and shift in relation to the times. Despite the continuing suspicion, doubt and conditional acceptance of the perceived reality on the part of different ethnic and minority groups, interpersonal attitudes do continue to evolve, the plight of individual groups previously considered isolated are seen to be interrelated, former ideals of separation and superiority are seen to be misguided and desperate attempts to divide and conquer, to command and control.

As the economic plight of the Western countries continues to veer and tilt wildly and seemingly out of control and the middle class continues to dissipate, wealth concentrating in even greater amounts within the ranks of the power elite, a realization seems to be taking hold among many previously quiescent and inclined towards support of the establishment and status quo. This realization has to do with the interrelated political and economic systems and the tenuous nature of their positions within them. That realization is concerned with the unity of purpose shared by people in general and is part and parcel of the general trend towards an increased acceptance of difference.

As people previously integrated into the system recognize the increasingly stratified nature of our societal structures and see through the lies and illusory realities of the mass media and the political classes, they come to realize that generations upon generations of their ancestors have been misinformed and misused in the accumulation of wealth and power for a select few. And that they have more in common with those in groups that have been traditionally oppressed than they do with the traditional oppressors. Societal systems and institutions that seemed impregnable and eternal falter and sway in the coursing winds of change. Attitudes and belief systems do the same.

The world itself is in the midst of transformational evolution; an evolution of cultural mores, economics and politics. The realization that the future does not have to be as the past has become the clarion call that unites generations while eating away at the ingrained attitudes and institutions of an illegitimate and unworkable system. The shift in racial attitudes is only one reflection of this overall trend. As couples continue to find love across cultural barriers, each iteration, each relationship or marriage, is an announcement of intent; of a break with a broken past and a linking to a united future as representative of the implicit promise of the West as the culmination of the process of integration of Old World peoples in what has been, is and will continue to be the manifestation of a truly New World.
