Storm clouds could destroy ozone layer, study suggests

A recent study suggests that highly reactive chlorine and bromine molecules ejected by cumulonimbus clouds are punching holes in the ozone layer over the United States.

Ninety percent of Earth's ozone is in the stratosphere (the second layer of the atmosphere, just above the one we breathe, the troposphere). This ozone forms the ozone layer, which protects everything on the Earth's surface from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays.

Ozone destruction in the lower stratosphere is caused by reactive chlorine and bromine molecules called free radicals. The free radicals steal one of ozone's three oxygen atoms. Losing an atom transforms ozone into an everyday oxygen molecule that doesn't confer the same protective benefits.

Usually, the chemical reactions that zap ozone happen only at extremely cold temperatures ? about minus 112 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 80 degrees Celsius) ? such as high in the atmosphere above the frozen poles. But Jim Anderson, lead author of the new study, suspected increasing the concentration of water vapor in the stratosphere through storm clouds meant the chemical reactions would spark at higher temperatures seen above the mid-latitudes of the United States.

"Anytime you satisfy the proper concentration of water and temperature, these reactions will take place," said Anderson, an atmospheric chemistry professor at Harvard University.

Water injections

Towering cumulonimbus clouds, the culprit behind severe storms, carry water vapor high into the sky via convection. During monitoring flights conducted between 2001 and 2007, scientists found the cloud tops reached into the lower stratosphere, at altitudes between 9 and 12 miles (15 and 20 kilometers) above us, sending the water they contained aloft. "These convective storms inject water far more deeply into the stratosphere than anybody ever suspected, and that immediately began to concern us," Anderson told OurAmazingPlanet.

Anderson's key concern is chlorine free radicals. The atoms assume their dangerous nature during a rapid series of chemical reactions that take place on the surface of sulfate-water aerosols, tiny droplets that are ubiquitous in the lower stratosphere.

"The chemistry of these sulfate-water aerosols is such that conversion rate from inorganic chlorine is a function not just of temperature, but of water vapor and temperature," Anderson said. Adding more water vapor to the lower stratosphere means chlorine free radicals can form at higher temperatures, he explained. The abundant sunlight available at lower latitudes also boosts the reaction speed.

The study shows chlorine molecules build up rapidly, within the first 24 hours after a storm. As a result, ozone loss can increase by two orders of magnitude compared to that in the regularly arid stratosphere.

The use of diagnostic imaging in Medicare patients with stage IV cancer has increased faster than among those with early-stage (stages I and II) disease, according to a study published July 30 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The costs of diagnostic imaging have increased more rapidly than the overall costs of cancer care, making diagnostic imaging the fastest-growing division of Medicare-reimbursed services. The net costs of cancer care are the highest in the last year of life; yet little is known about the use of high-cost imaging in cancer patients during the last year of life.

In order to determine the usage of high-cost imaging in cancer patients at the end of life, Yue-Yung Hu, M.D., M.P.H. and colleagues in the Center for Outcomes and Policy Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the Center for Surgery and Public Health at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program at the University of Wisconsin, looked at claims within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare database between 1994 and 2009 for computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, and nuclear medicine scans for patients diagnosed with stage IV breast, colorectal, lung, or prostate cancer between 1995-2006. The rate of imaging per-patient per-month of survival was determined for each phase of care. For reference, trends in imaging use in early-stage patients with the same tumor types during the same time period were also considered.

The researchers found that most patients with stage IV breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancer undergo high-cost imaging procedures throughout the course of their care and that the usage of imaging has steadily increased between 1995 and 2006. The increase may reflect a lack of guidelines in this area or the use of imaging to guide symptom management, detect disease progression and assess treatment effect. "Because scans help clinicians determine whether a change in (or cessation of) treatment is indicated, the expanding use of advanced imaging in stage IV disease is likely a manifestation of the increasing number and types of treatment options available to these patients," the authors write. "Imaging, although it often leads to (appropriate) palliative measures, may also distract patients from focusing on achievable end-of-life goals, require them to spend more of their limited time in medical care settings and/or provoke anxiety." The authors point out the importance of examining such patient-centered outcomes in future research to define the role of advance imaging in Stage IV solid tumors.

In an accompanying editorial, Drs. Robin Yabroff and Joan Warren, of the Health Services and Economics Branch at the National Cancer Institute, feel that assessing the appropriateness of care for patients with stage IV disease is complex. "Physicians tend to overestimate survival for terminally ill cancer patients, which may influence their treatment and related imaging recommendations," the editorialists write. "Development of practice guidelines for advanced imaging in patients with stage IV disease, with explicit statements about the state of evidence will be critical, particularly for care outside of the window surrounding patient diagnosis."

Ten Bizarre Sports The Olympics Should Add

Pickleball is a uniquely American sport: it's fun for all ages, can be played with minimal equipment, and is named after a dog. Invented in the 1960s outside of Seattle, Pickleball is a version of tennis (though it is commonly played on a badminton court with the net lowered) where the rackets are replaced with table tennis paddles and the ball is actually a specialty made wiffle ball.

Pickleball was designed to be a sport that would eliminate the problems that would occur when trying to play with groups of varying ages. Because of the slow speed of the sport it is popular among some elderly communities as a form of fun competitive exercise, but also as an activity they can do with their grandchildren. It was named after a dog, Pickles, who had a habit of running off with errant balls.

Korfball is a Dutch sport that was featured as a demonstration sport in the 1920 and 1928 Olympic Games. It was the sport that featured both men and women players on the court at the same time, which made it quite controversial. Journalists refused to take it seriously, and women wearing sportswear (which showed knees and ankles) was shocking and appalling to culture a the time. Still, Korfball thrived, and is now extremely popular in Taiwan and is played in over 50 countries.

The IKF Korfball World Championship is held around every four years, and has been dominated by the Netherlands and Belgium, with the two countries meeting in every single title game. While it's unlikely to join the Olympics anytime soon, as it remains a regional sport, it does have a growing international presence.

The Winter Olympics has a number of events that became popular as extreme sports or are winterized versions of summer sports. It's time for the Summer Games to get on this trend and add the Street Luge. Abandoned by attempts to make the X-Games more arena friendly, the street luge is one of the most dangerous sports in the world.

Street luge was invented in San Francisco when some skateboarders realized they could get higher speeds by laying down on their board. Eventually, specialized equipment was created and different styles of street luge became prominent. It was a featured sport at the X-Games until 2001, and has recently consolidated into one governing body to make international competition easier.

Jai alai is billed as the fastest ball sport in the world, though it no longer holds that world record. A combination of handball, lacrosse and racquetball Jai alai is a fast-paced, high speed sport that is popular among gamblers in Florida and New England. The nets players use to catch the ball were not always part of the game--you originally caught the ball with your hand. A child, who could not afford the leather gloves required of the game, developed the basket hands that are now a mainstay in the sport.

The ball in Jai alai has been clocked going at 188 miles per hour, which is faster than the pole speed of the 2011 Daytona 500. The high speeds necessitates the need for helmets, as five people have died playing the sport. It is also played in Cuba, Mexico, the Philippines and South America.

How do you make the game of croquet interesting and challenging for experienced players? You throw them into the woods. Extreme croquet does just that, and uses the natural terrain such as trees, streams and brush to add a new challenge to the old game.

Regular croquet was an event in the 1900 Olympics, and a variant of it was featured in 1904, but the sport hasn't seen the Olympics in over 100 years. Perhaps the new challenges of an extreme environment is just want to sport needs to be thrust from the front lawns of New England to the stage of the Olympics.

Want to go dogsled racing, but don't have a sled? No issue, you can just grab your skis and go Skijoring. Popular in locations with harsh winter climates, skijoring is a good way for some dogs to get exercise in the winter, while also testing the balance and skill of their owners.

There are other variations of skijoring, including an Equestrian variety that was a demonstration sport in the 1928 Olympic Games. However, canine skijoring has grown considerably in popularity over the last 50 years. Unlike the equestrian variety, there can be no external motivation (such as a harness) for the dog to run. He must run because he wants to run, and be able to respond to his owner's commands. There have been some efforts to get skijoring featured in the Winter Olympic Games.

Underwater hockey is one of those sports that is a lot of fun to play, but not very much fun for spectators. Because, as the name suggests, much of the action happens underwater, so in order to see the game you have to be underwater. Underwater hockey players have extremely good breath control and lung capacity, as the sport requires them to stay underwater for long periods of time.

Physical contact is not a part of underwater hockey, and because being underwater pretty much limits or eliminates and individual advantages, it relays much more on team play. While not great for spectators, it has been well received when filmed with underwater cameras, and is quickly becoming the most popular underwater team sport.

Bandy is in the process of attempting to become an Olympic sport, and will be a demonstration sport in the 2014 Winter games (as it was in the 1952 games). It is recognized by the IOC but has never been an official Olympic sport. Bandy is often called 'Russian Hockey', and for good reason, the sport has many similarities to hockey (as well as soccer).

To put it in the simplest way possible: Imagine playing hockey on a frozen soccer field with smaller goals and a round, orange ball, and you'll have a pretty good idea of what Bandy is like. Similar to hockey in many ways, it relies even more on strategy than hockey due to the increased size of the field. Bandy is popular in countries like England, Canada, but is most popular in Russia which has dominated the sport since it was invented.

Kayak Polo is, like it's cousin water polo, a marine version of the equestrian classic. Recognized by the International Canoe Federation and the IOC, but not yet an Olympic Sport, Kayak Polo is exactly what it sounds like, namely Water Polo in canoes or kayaks.

But what separates kayak polo from other forms of the sport is the return of contact. You can 'tackle' other teams with your canoe, which means that, when playing kayak polo, you WILL get wet. Unlike crew, kayak polo involves more direct interaction between teams, and can be extremely exciting and intense when played among highly skilled players. The sport is internationally dominated by European players, who have won every men's and women's title since 2000.

Whenever I watch a sepak takraw, I like to imagine how the sport was invented. I like to picture a soccer fan watching a volleyball match and saying "That's too easy! Now if they could do that without using their hands, that'd be something." Because that is, in essence the sport: Volleyball with the 'no hands or arms' rules from soccer.

While the sport is extremely popular in Southeast Asia, it is not yet an Olympic sport. There have been several pushes in recent years to include the sport, but China's domination of the medal tally have slowed some of the progress. Still, it is an incredible sport to watch, and it is starting to gain some attention in the United States and other countries outside Southeast Asia, and has become a true international sport.

At some point, every presidential candidate is bound to take a trip abroad to advertise his foreign policy credentials. Because most candidates don?t want to be accused of criticizing his opponent?s foreign policy abroad, the trips are usually little more than carefully staged photo ops.

Four years ago, during his ?foreign policy? trip, Barack Obama donned a skullcap and pushed a written prayer into a nook in the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. He hasn?t been back to Israel since, and his enmity toward our only Middle Eastern ally has been demonstrated so often, there is no room here to rehash the evidence.

Mitt Romney?s trip this week was supposed to follow the normal script. Off to London first for the opening of the Olympics, then to Israel and last to Poland, the trip was planned to hit the headlines and Obama?s vulnerabilities. The U.K. is a strong ally, Israel is another (and of greater domestic political importance), and Poland is another that ? until Obama came along ? held a special regard for us. Poland practically worships Ronald Reagan for his role in winning the Cold War and embracing Poland?s struggle against Soviet oppression. And many Polish-Americans ? who may comprise the swing vote in several states ? are worried about Obama?s disregard of Poland?s defense.

Britain, as one wag wrote a few days ago, is an easy date for American pols. All a guy has to do is say something nice about the Queen or Churchill, josh them about the lousy weather and say something warm and serious about the ?special relationship.? At that point, the Brits conclude that the American candidate is perhaps too unlettered or too much of a cowboy, but all in all a good chap. Then everyone smiles as the candidate climbs back on the aircraft to go to the next stop.

Unfortunately for Romney, his London trip was more reminiscent of Monday Night Football?s ?C?mon, man? segment. You know the one: part of the halftime show with a half dozen video clips of players, refs or coaches screwing up big plays to Chris Berman?s cry of ?c?mon, man.? Some reporter asked Romney whether Britain was ready for the Olympics to start. Instead of saying, ?everything looks smashing,? Romney said, ?You know, it?s hard to know just how well it will turn out. There are a few things that were disconcerting. The stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials ? that obviously is not something which is encouraging.?

That peeved Brit PM David Cameron and London Mayor Boris Johnson who both made snide responses and launched Romney into two days of damage control. Romney?s unforced error is inexplicable. But it will be forgotten quickly after Romney?s superb speech yesterday in Jerusalem.

Romney arrived in Israel about two weeks after Obama?s National Security Advisor Tom Donilon reportedly went there to advise Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu privately about America?s contingency plans for Iran if the economic sanctions didn?t succeed in stopping Iran?s nuclear weapons program. (The Israeli government denied that report.)

The Israelis had no reason to believe anything Donilon told them. Obama has done and continues to do everything in his power to prevent an Israeli attack on Iran. Though Obama has given the appearance of going along with congressionally authored economic sanctions against Iran, he has defanged the Iran sanctions, granting most of Iran?s trading partners in Europe and the Far East exemptions from them. When the Iranians revolted against the Tehran regime in 2009, Obama did nothing to help them. He will never use military power to prevent Iran?s achieving its nuclear weapons ambitions, and everyone ? especially the Israelis ? knows that.

In that context, Romney has given two excellent foreign policy speeches. The first, before the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention on July 24, and then in Jerusalem yesterday.

In his VFW speech, Romney labeled Iran as the greatest national security threat we face. And he said, ?The President?s policies have made it harder to recover from the deepest recession in seventy years? exposed the military to cuts that no one can justify? compromised our national-security secrets? and in dealings with other nations, given trust where it is not earned, insult where it is not deserved, and apology where it is not due.?

Introduced by the mayor of Jerusalem, Romney began by emphasizing that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.

Romney again hit Iran hard. Speaking of Iran?s threats to wipe Israel off the map, he reminded the crowd of the late Menachem Begin?s words that when a nation threatens Israel it should be taken at its word and said that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons should be America?s highest national security priority. He said that we must not delude ourselves into believing that a nuclear-armed Iran can be contained, and that it is right for Israel to defend itself and for America to stand with Israel when it does so.

Romney?s speech will be criticized as an embrace of neoconservatism, but it was not that at all. When he said, ?We have a duty to speed and to shape history? he was not calling for the imposition of democracy in the Middle East. He was saying, clearly, that Israeli democracy had to be defended against the growing threats that surround it. He called upon the international community to pressure Egypt?s new Islamist government to honor the Israeli-Egyptian peace accords negotiated by Anwar Sadat. Importantly, he said that the US-Israeli alliance was not only a strategic one, but also a force for good in the world.

Romney?s performance in Israel was a superb defense of freedom and American principles. It set the stage for his visit to Poland.

The Poles, like the Brits, are an easy date for Romney, but not for our current president. Poland was promised a ground-based missile defense system by George W. Bush to defend it against Iranian ? and implicitly Russian ? missile attack. Obama reneged on that promise and instead promised a sea-based system, which our navy lacks sufficient missile ships to provide.

In his VFW speech, Romney previewed what he should say in Poland. Referring to the missile defense issue, he told the VFW that Obama?s policy toward Eastern Europe ??began with the sudden abandonment of friends in Poland and the Czech Republic. They had courageously agreed to provide sites for our antimissile systems, only to be told, at the last hour, that the agreement was off,? Romney said. ?As part of the so-called reset in policy, missile defenses were sacrificed as a unilateral concession to the Russian government,? Romney added. ?If that gesture was designed to inspire good will from Russia, it clearly missed the mark.?

Romney can hit as big a home run in Poland as he did in Israel with a few simple acts. He should visit the statue of Ronald Reagan in Warsaw and there quote the words of Lech Walesa at the statue?s dedication in 2011. Walesa said, ?I wonder whether today?s Poland, Europe and world could look the same without President Reagan. As a participant in those events, I must say that it?s inconceivable.?

Romney needn?t promise, today, that Bush?s promise will be kept. He should save that for a speech at home. He can, and should, repeat the theme he followed in the VFW speech and in Israel. America will defend the freedom of its allies when they are threatened, he should say, and Poland?s freedom is as important to America now as when Ronald Reagan fought for it by standing with Walesa.

If Romney does these things, he will come home from the trip a winner. In Israel, and in Poland, he will have demonstrated a strength that hasn?t been evident before. When he gets back, he?ll have to face the economic crisis, liberal calls for more gun control, and everything else that will come up in the campaign. But he will be better able to do so for having demonstrated his understanding that the world is a dangerous place and that America? and Israel, Poland, England, and our other allies ? can pursue our mutual duty to speed and shape history in the cause of freedom.

MANILA, Philippines?Aboitiz-led Union Bank of the Philippines grew its first-semester net profit by 42 percent to P4.07 billion year on year as higher earnings from lending were complemented by trading gains.

In an interview, Union Bank president Victor Valdepe?as said the first-semester results translated to a return on equity of about 18 percent, boosted by the increase in both interest and noninterest income.

The bank?s net interest income in the first semester went up by 8.2 percent to P3.67 billion while net trading gains surged by 51 percent to P3.29 billion, based on a regulatory filing.

About 70 percent of the bank?s first-semester bottom line was chalked up during the first quarter while the second quarter contributed 30 percent.

For the second quarter alone, Union Bank?s net profit declined by 43 percent to P1.22 billion year on year as trading gains fell (by 32 percent to P641.3 million) even as net interest income surged (by 16.3 percent to P1.89 billion). This was in line with market expectations of slower treasury gains in the second quarter.

?The second quarter was when emerging market (asset) prices, including bond prices went down significantly. But we did anticipate this and that?s why we took profits in the first quarter,? Valdepe?as said.

Union Bank expanded its loan book by 14 percent year on year in the first semester to end-June with net loans and receivables of P87.5 billion, boosted by the robust expansion in consumer and middle-market lending.

Valdepe?as noted that consumer lending had risen on the back of over 30 percent expansion in auto and mortgage lending while the middle-market segment likewise expanded by close to 30 percent.

?But our corporate (lending book) has been flattish. There?s a shift (in corporates? funding preference) from promissory notes to preferred shares. They are moving in that direction, taking advantage of the low-cost environment to issue long-term liabilities and therefore from that standpoint, there?s a shift from loan book to private securities,? Valdepe?as said.

Apart from growing its loan book, Union Bank also expanded other earning assets, growing by 43 percent year on year its available-for-sale trading and investment securities to P89.68 billion as of end-June.

German investors hit in multi-million dollar ponzi scheme

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Prosecutors in Mannheim, Germany said they have evidence that 1,295 investors from Germany, Austria and Switzerland lost at least $37 million in a pyramid scheme allegedly run by a German man arrested in Las Vegas last week.

"The actual damages are expected to be higher," the Mannheim prosecutor's office said in a statement on Monday.

Ulrich Felix Anton Engler, 51, was arrested in Las Vegas on Wednesday for violating U.S. immigration law.

U.S. Immigration and Customs said last week Engler was in the custody of its officials and would be deported and turned over to German law enforcement authorities, adding he was wanted by them on multiple criminal charges after allegedly defrauding investors.

Investigators from the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg are standing by to aid with a transfer of Engler, the Mannheim prosecutor's office said on Monday.

The prosecutor said Engler is accused of using a Florida-based marketing company to lure investors between end-2004 and mid-2007, under the pretence of investing the cash on the New York Stock Exchange.

But he is actually said to have been running a ponzi scheme, the prosecutor said.

Last year, authorities began to re-examine his case and determined he was running a similar scheme in Nevada under a new name.

An international arrest warrant was issued for him in 2007, but his whereabouts remained unknown until his arrest last week.

2 US climbers found dead on Peruvian peak

Searchers on Saturday found the bodies of two U.S. mountaineers who apparently plunged 1,000 feet to their deaths on their way down from the summit of a glacier-capped Peruvian peak.

Gil Weiss, 29, and Ben Horne, 32, fell off a ridge after reaching the west summit of 20,584-foot?Palcaraju in the Cordillera Blanca range in mid-July, search coordinator Ted Alexander told The Associated Press.

Their bodies will be recovered Sunday, he said.

Both Weiss, of Queens, N.Y., and Horne, of Annandale, Va., were experienced climbers. Weiss was a repeat visitor to the Cordillera Blanca while this trip was Horne's first.

Both belong to the pullharder.org climbers' collective, and Horne wrote about the first, six-day leg of their trip on its blog, saying they had been buffeted by hurricane-force winds when the two reached the top of the 20,216-foot Ranrapalca.

After a rest in Huaraz, the two set out again July 11 for an excursion of seven to 10 days. Their families contacted Alexander after 13 days passed with no word from them.

Weiss's sister, Galit, said the two were not carrying a satellite phone.

Horne was a graduate student in economics at the University of California, San Diego. Weiss was founder of a business a Boulder, Colo., business called Beyond Adventure Productions that specialized in organizing and photographing events in remote and spectacular locations.

The Cordillera Blanca climbing season runs from June to September, and the deaths of Weiss and Horne bring to eight the number of mountaineers who have lost their lives in the range so far this year, the AP said.

Sarawak target to become cricket sports-tourism destination

KUCHING: In an effort to promote cricket sports-tourism, the Sarawak Cricket Association (SCA) has targeted for the state to become a new destination for touring cricket teams to this region.

?Nowadays, the game of cricket is not only a way of life for sports lovers in many countries but also a reason for people to travel across the globe especially where the game of cricket are played.

?There are die-hard cricket lovers who traveled along with cricket teams and their families. They also combined cricket matches along with the pleasure of tourism making the experience thoroughly enjoyable,? informed secretary of SCA Gordon Chung Pei Nan to The Borneo Post yesterday.

Chung added that in order to achieve the target, Sarawak would need to actively participate in cricket competitions around this region to foster closer relationship with cricket teams from other countries, and at the same time to promote Sarawak as a sports tourism destination.

?In order to achieve the objectives, Sarawak has to thoroughly prepare a formidable cricket team and must also possess the necessary infrastructure and facilities that meet international standards,? stressed Chung. According to Chung, the state team is currently formularising a comprehensive training programme in preparation for next year?s Challenge Trophy and has targeted to gain promotion to Elite Trophy category by 2014.

Too meet the target, Chung revealed that SCA is preparing a shadow squad by conducting mix training with the state senior team and under-18 players.

The association has also started the Junior Development Programme by establishing a Cricket Centre of Excellence in collaboration with schools to scout for potential under-15 players.

?At the moment we are upgrading and improving the training facility at TUDM cricket ground and the present junior cricket ground at SK Tabuan.

And the proposal for the Sarawak Cricket stadium has been submitted to the ministry of sports for approval and application for funding will be included into the 3rd Rolling Budget,? informed Chung.

Chung hoped that with the availability of an international standard cricket venue, Sarawak would be able to bid to host international cricket event and would help to boost the growth of cricket sports-tourism.

One thing quickly has become clear in the lawsuit against Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh:? The question isn?t whether he owns Saadia Van Winkle compensation for her injuries, but how much.

?Mr. Suh acknowledges Ms. Van Winkle should receive fair compensation for any injury she sustained or medical expense or wage loss she incurred and Mr. Suh has attempted to resolve the matter fairly with her,? Mike Lehner said in a written statement, according to the Detroit Free Press.? ?She has rejected those attempts and has now filed a lawsuit against Mr. Suh asking for more than $1,000,000.? According to that lawsuit, she has incurred approximately $4,000 in medical expenses, and lost wages in the amount of $2500.? Mr. Suh denies many of the allegations in the complaint, but now it appears a jury will have to decide how to fairly compensate Ms. Van Winkle for her injury.?

Typically, a personal-injury case has a settlement value in the range of three times the amount of the so-called ?out-of-pocket? or ?special? damages.? The thinking is that, by using a specials-times-three formula, the bills get paid, the plaintiff gets an equivalent amount for pain and suffering, and the lawyer gets his/her cut.

Of course, a jury can award whatever it wants, subject to modification by the judge if the jury gives too much or too little.? Still, in this case, the settlement value would be in the range of $20,000, if Van Winkle?s injuries are fully resolved.

So, yes, a $1 million demand is excessive.? It therefore makes sense to take it to trial, especially since the legal fees and the settlement/verdict ultimately will be covered by Suh?s insurance policy ? assuming that he had one that was paid up and in place.

For his part, Suh declined to address the situation on Friday, referring all questions to his lawyers.? That?s the smart approach, because anything he says now can be used against him in court later.

Jackson move to Mayo could point to complications

CHICAGO (AP) ? The announcement that Jesse Jackson Jr. had been transferred to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota pinned down his whereabouts for the first time in weeks and gave clear confirmation that the Illinois congressman is suffering from depression.

It also was the first mention that he's now being treated for a "gastrointestinal issue," which some experts said Saturday was a sign his condition is becoming more complicated.

The Chicago Democrat and son of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson has been on a secretive leave of absence for nearly seven weeks, during which his office has released only occasional snippets of information, including that he was undergoing treatment for a "mood disorder" at an undisclosed inpatient facility.

A new, three-sentence written statement from the congressman was distributed by the Mayo Clinic late Friday during the national broadcast of the Olympics' opening ceremony, when public attention was more likely fixed half a world away.

As in the past, the statement gave scant detail, an apparent ongoing strategy in the face of pressure from congressional colleagues and constituents clamoring for an in-depth explanation.

It said he had been transferred to the Mayo Clinic for "extensive inpatient evaluation for depression and gastrointestinal issues," but gave no information on the nature of his depression, where Jackson was being treated prior to arriving at the Mayo Clinic or his progress.

The clinic said Saturday it could not release anything further.

Mention of a gastrointestinal problem raised new questions ? whether it's linked to the depression, entirely unrelated or a complication from a 2004 procedure he underwent to help him lose weight.

"Certainly some people do, as part of their depression or anxiety disorder, manifest it with gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea," said Matthew Lilly, a psychiatrist in Rochester, Minn., who did a yearlong fellowship at Mayo in 2010 before going into private practice.

"But for them to even comment on that would, to me, sound as if it's a significant issue and not just a mild symptom associated with his illness," he said.

The Mayo Clinic has a highly rated gastrointestinal department as well as a free-standing inpatient psychiatric unit, said John Anderson of the Associates in Psychiatry and Psychology in southeastern Minnesota.

He said people receiving psychiatric care are often transferred to the clinic when a physical illness develops since both can be treated there.

"Mayo does an excellent job in terms of combining those, so they can treat what's essentially a dual diagnosis," Anderson said.

Phone messages left Saturday for Jackson's spokesman weren't immediately returned.

There was no word Saturday on how long Jackson might remain at the Mayo Clinic.

Typically, Mayo will keep someone as a psychiatric inpatient anywhere from several days to several weeks, Lilly said, though he added the use of the phrase "extensive inpatient evaluation" suggested to him it could be longer for Jackson.

"That would be pretty unusual for someone to stay as an inpatient more than a couple of weeks unless there were some pretty complicated issues going on," Lilly said.

The Mayo Clinic has treated other high-profile figures, including Saudi King Abdullah, and has a reputation for top-level security and strict patient privacy, which is evidently important to the congressman and those around him.

Clinic spokesman Ginger Plumbo said it released the brief statement only because Jackson's staff requested it.

"We would never just release information about any patient without their request or consent," Plumbo said.

The timing of Jackson's medical leave has raised questions, in part because Jackson is facing an ethics investigation in the U.S. House connected to imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

The congressman went on leave June 10, but his office didn't disclose it until weeks later. Initially, his office said Jackson was being treated for exhaustion. Since then, the office has said his condition was more serious and required inpatient medical treatment.

Earlier this month, a statement from an unidentified doctor said Jackson was receiving intensive medical treatment at a residential treatment facility for "a mood disorder."

The House Ethics Committee is investigating allegations that Jackson was involved in discussions about raising money for Blagojevich's campaign in exchange for the then-governor appointing him to President Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat.

Jackson was not charged and has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.
