Gas prices lowest since January, but oil soars

Gas prices hit a $3.35 national average ? the lowest since Jan. 6. But oil prices soared Friday, hinting that gas prices may be back on the way up.?

Oil soared the most in more than three years after European leaders took surprisingly aggressive steps to halt a debt crisis that has undermined confidence in the global economy.

Benchmark?U.S. crude jumped by $7.27, or 9.4 percent, on Friday to end the week at $84.96 per barrel in New York. Brent crude, which helps set the?price?of imported oil, rose by $6.44, or 7 percent, to $95.51 per barrel in London.

The surge could end a nearly three-month decline in?U.S. gasoline?prices. The national average for?gas?had declined from $3.94 per gallon in the first week of April to $3.35 on Friday.

Oil rose after eurozone leaders unveiled a plan to rescue ailing banks, relieve debt-burdened governments in Italy, Spain and elsewhere and restore the confidence of markets. The progress in dealing with Europe's lengthy debt crisis is good news for that continent's ? and the world's ? economy. Economic growth drives energy consumption.

The deal was struck as borrowing rates in Spain and Italy surged to levels that were considered unsustainable. Leery investors were surprised and energized by the breakthrough ? they rushed to buy riskier assets like oil and stocks and sold ultra-safe?U.S. Treasuries. Stock in the?U.S. rose more than 2 percent, while European stock markets posted even loftier gains.

"All of a sudden we're not worried about the Spanish and Italian banks going bankrupt over the weekend," said Phil Flynn, an oil analyst with?Price?Group.

U.S. drivers might not share in oil traders' relief. Tom Kloza, publisher and chief oil analyst at Oil?PriceInformation Service, said gasoline should get a little more expensive next week as stations?price?in the jump in oil, which accounts for two-thirds of the cost of a gallon of?gas.

Oil plunged around 25 percent from May 1 through Thursday. At $3.35 per gallon, the national average was the lowest since Jan. 6, according to auto club AAA, Wright Express and OPIS.?Gas?could still fall a few cents over the weekend ? pump?prices?usually lag the action in the markets.

"That's probably the bottom until after Labor Day," Kloza said. He expects the average to waver between $3.30 and $3.50 per gallon for the rest of the summer.

Friday's percentage rise in benchmark?U.S. crude was the biggest since March 12, 2009. The dollar gain was the largest since Sept. 22, 2008.

Statoil previously said that daily production will fall 10 percent after oil workers went on strike at four North Sea fields.

North Sea oil supplies much of Europe. The loss of production will squeeze stockpiles just as Europe prepares to stop buying Iranian oil on Sunday. Europe announced an embargo earlier this year in an effort to pressure Iran to open its nuclear facilities to inspection. Western nations fear that Iran is building a nuclear weapon; Iran denies the claim.

International sanctions already have cut Iranian exports by about 700,000 barrels per day. Experts said it's unclear how much more of Iran's oil will be taken off the market once the embargo goes into effect. But a further reduction in global supply could cause oil?prices?to rise.

Friday's rise in oil?prices?boosted shares for major petroleum companies, trimming some of their losses for the quarter. On Friday, shares of BP jumped 4.7 percent, Apache Corp. rose by 2.3 percent, Exxon Mobil Corp. jumped 2.2 percent and Chevron Corp. rose by 1.4 percent.

In other futures trading, heating oil added 14.41 cents, about 6 percent, to finish at $2.696 per gallon and wholesale gasoline added 11.3 cents, or nearly 5 percent, to end at $2.7272 per gallon. Natural?gas?rose by 10.2 cents, nearly 4 percent, to finish the week at $2.824 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Enjoy the long weekend, if only for a second

LONDON?? The world is about to get a well-earned long weekend ? but don't make big plans, because it will only last an extra second.

A so-called 'leap second' will be added to the world's atomic clocks as they undergo a rare adjustment to keep them in step with the slowing rotation of the earth.

To achieve the adjustment, on Saturday night atomic clocks will read 23 hours, 59 minutes and 60 seconds before moving on to midnight Greenwich Mean Time.

Super-accurate atomic clocks are the ultimate reference point by which the world sets its wrist watches.

But their precise regularity ? which is much more constant than the shifting movement of the earth around the sun that marks out our days and nights ? brings problems of its own.

If no adjustments were made, the clocks would move further ahead, and after many years the sun would set at midday. Leap seconds perform a similar function to the extra day in each leap year which keeps the calendar in sync with the seasons.

The grandly named International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS), based in Paris, is responsible for keeping track of the gap between atomic and planetary time and issuing international edicts on the addition of leap seconds.

"We want to have both times close together, and it's not possible to adjust the earth's rotation," Daniel Gambis, head of the Earth Orientation Center of the IERS, told Reuters.

Gambis said the turning of the earth and its movement around the sun are far from constant.

In recent years a leap second has been added every few years, slightly more infrequent than in the 1970s despite the long-term slowdown in Earth's rotation caused by tides, earthquakes and a host of other natural phenomena.

Adjustments to atomic clocks are more than a technical curiosity.

A collection of the highly accurate devices are used to set Coordinated Universal Time which governs time standards on the world wide web, satellite navigation, banking computer networks and international air traffic systems.

There have been calls to abandon leap seconds but a meeting of the International Telecommunications Union, the U.N. agency responsible for international communications standards, failed to reach a consensus in January.

"They decided not to decide anything," says Gambis, adding that another attempt will be made in 2015.

Opponents of the leap second want a simpler system that avoids the costs and margin for error in making manual changes to thousands of computer networks. Supporters argue it needs to stay to preserve the precision of systems in areas like navigation.

Britain's Royal Astronomical Society says the leap second should be retained until there is a much broader debate on the change.

"This is something that affects not just the telecom industry," said RAS spokesman Robert Massey. "It would decouple time-keeping from the position of the sun in the sky and so a broad debate is needed."

Time standards are important in professional astronomy for pointing telescopes in the right direction but critical systems in other areas, not least defense, would also be affected by the change.

"To argue that it would be pain free is not quite true," Massey said.

A decision is not urgent. Some estimate that if the current arrangement stays, the world may eventually have to start adding two leap seconds a year. But that is not expected to happen for another hundreds years or so.

In the meantime, Massey plans to use his extra second wisely this weekend. "I'll enjoy it with an extra second in bed," he said.

Netflix is setting itself up for a long and protracted against some of its main competitors. The stakes are high and the winner will reap huge benefits. But can Netflix really expect that it can win this battle?

It?s Netflix against cable. Who?s gonna win?

Netflix has long been a thorn in the side of cable providers. It?s not hard to see why. Netflix gives consumers a cheaper option to their cable TV providers. And that?s what worries Big Cable. If there is an alternative to them, their business will suffer. Cable TV providers have done all that they can to slow down Netflix?s growth. But have they gone too far?

Netflix allows consumers to receive movies and TV shows through the mail. They also allow consumers to stream movies and TV shows through internet capable devices like computer, televisions and gaming consoles. Netflix?s monthly fee is dramatically less than that of almost all Pay TV providers. This gives consumers a less expensive entertainment option. But there are some drawbacks. Streaming content takes up internet bandwidth. That is where cable companies have found a way to fight Netflix.

Most cable TV providers are also internet service providers (ISPs). They like to bundle Pay TV and internet access and sell the package to consumers. Most providers have a cap on how much internet bandwidth a consumer can use in a given month. Once that limit is reached, a consumer usually experiences slower internet speeds. In extreme cases, the internet service provider stops a customer from using the service completely.

Netflix contends that cable companies and their ISPs are using data caps to keep consumers from using Netflix exclusively. Of course, the cable providers say that is not the case at all. They say that they are happy to provide internet access to consumers to use as they see fit to. Even those consumers that want to stream video from Netflix, Hulu or any other service. Netflix wants the U.S. government to make sure of that. They have asked a committee of the U.S. House of Representatives to make sure that Pay TV providers are not trying to keep consumers from bandwidth hogging video streaming.

Cable companies have a history of anticompetitive behavior. This wouldn?t be the first time that they have tried to keep someone from cutting into their very profitable businesses. Netflix has over 20 million subscribers and that number is expected to continue to grow. That growth could depend on Netflix?s ability to compete on a level playing field with Big Cable.

Iranian game gives new life to Salman Rushdie death threat

Back in?1989, Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa against author Salman Rushdie after he penned "The Satanic Verses" ? a book the Ayatollah declared blasphemous against Islam.

Despite the call for Rushdie's assassination, all these years later the writer?is still alive ...?and tweeting to his heart's content.

Now, a group of students from the?government-sponsored?Islamic Association of Students are giving new life to?the?Rushdie death threat ? albeit?through?a computer?game.

The group?is in the midst of working on a game with?the catchy title of "The Stressful Life of Salman Rushdie and Implementation of His Verdict," reports?The Guardian.?The game was revealed at the International Computer Games Expo taking place in Tehran this week.?

Mohammad-Taqi Fakhrian of the student association told Iran's Mehr news agency that, "We felt we should find a way to introduce our third and fourth generation to the fatwa against Salman Rushdie and its importance," reports?Guardian writer?Saeed Kamali Dehghan.?

Details about the game are few,?and no one has said exactly how it will teach players about the fatwa, but?the student association reported that "initial phases of production" have been completed, according to The Guardian.

"The Stressful Life of Salman Rushdie" is certainly part of a growing number of games being made in the Middle East and from a Middle-Eastern perspective.

As Reuters recently reported, the Arab world has one of the fastest growing communities of online gamers. And developers from the region are increasingly producing games that tell their stories.

Crisis? Germans savor sunshine as euro storm blows

HANOVER, Germany (Reuters) - For his fellow Germans, explains businessman Roland Frobel, the euro crisis is a hurricane that may have been spotted on the horizon but has yet to blow in.

"The storm is coming, everybody knows that, but the lightning has not struck yet," said the chief financial officer of Rossmann, one of Germany's largest health and beauty retail chains, at its headquarters near the northern city of Hanover.

From where he is standing, it is hard to imagine sunnier economic weather. His firm has recently created nearly 3,000 new jobs in Germany and abroad - where it has been expanding in non-euro zone countries such as Poland and Turkey - and expects its sales this year to rise by nearly 12 percent from 2011.

"The feeling of looming crisis that people have is still vague, undefined," said Frobel. "And you see this in their continued willingness to go out and buy. Their readiness to consume is holding up well."

Hanover, a bustling industrial and trading hub on the fertile plain of northern Germany, is a world away from the recession engulfing Greece, Spain and other parts of Europe.

Life, for Germans, is as it should be. Unemployment is at 20-year lows. Exports are at record levels. The national soccer squad has predictably been storming from one victory to the next in the Euro 2012 championship.

German consumer morale actually rose going into July, a key survey by GfK market research group showed this week, on hopes of higher wages, though it also revealed greater pessimism about the economic outlook due to the euro crisis.

People are well aware that everything could suddenly change for the worse if the crisis affecting their neighbors finally blows in.

"In Germany there is no crisis. But that could change very fast. The euro is unloved and we miss the deutschmark," pensioner Paul Majer, 76, said as he strolled with his wife around the cobbled streets of Hanover's old town.

CULTURE CLASH

Like many Germans, he blames those in southern countries for putting Germany's hard-won prosperity at risk by failing to enact the sort of austerity measures Germany endured when the euro arrived and wages were held down to keep it competitive.

"I don't believe things will stay OK for much longer. The euro zone is too diverse. They say we Germans live to work while the Mediterranean cultures work to live," Majer said.

Chancellor Angela Merkel will be under unprecedented pressure at a European Union summit this week to pledge more of German taxpayers' cash to rescue the euro. Her countrymen, including the burghers of Hanover, are having none of it.

"Greece should not get any more money, it is a bottomless pit. The strong countries cannot prop up the weak ones forever. Germany is just not strong enough to do that," said taxi driver Kurt Ringling, 65.

A city of 500,000 people, Hanover is a good place to take the pulse of 'middle Germany' because of its central location and a diverse economy that includes major manufacturers such as Continental and Volkswagen, insurance firms and tour operator TUI. It is also home to the world's biggest trade fair.

"Unemployment here fell again last month. The unions have secured wage increases. Many firms are doing relatively well, both the big industrial firms that rely on exports but also the 'Mittelstand'," said mayor Stephan Weil, referring to Germany's often family-owned small and medium-sized businesses.

"But many people look with anxiety at Europe, especially those countries in big financial difficulty like Greece and Spain. Many people in Hanover know the countries from having spent holidays there or have friends and acquaintances here who have come here from those countries," he said.

PATIENCE WEARING THIN

The storm clouds of the crisis are slowly arriving. Local newspapers have reported the introduction of short-time working at factories belonging to leading automotive suppliers Continental and Johnson Controls in the Hanover area because of crumbling demand in key European markets.

Psychologist Manon Rossmanik, 35, said she did not feel the euro crisis in her own life but said there were growing signs of people preparing for the worst.

"Real estate prices are going up. People want to protect their savings by buying property, tangible things," she said, clutching a wad of estate agency brochures.

That sense of alarm prods Germans to stand by Merkel and her firm insistence that other euro zone countries accept their austerity "medicine" before receiving aid.

"Germans' patience is wearing thin - in fact, there's none left. We sometimes have the impression Europe can only exist by being on the German payroll," said Wolfgang Nowak, head of the Alfred Herrhausen Society, a think-tank run by Deutsche Bank.

"The German national mood is very anti-bailout... We want Merkel to be a good Swabian housewife," he said, invoking a popular German image of penny-pinching prudence.

At the site of the annual Hanover trade fair, which has its roots in the postwar reconstruction that gave rise to Germany's 'Wirtschaftswunder' (economic miracle), the mood remains upbeat.

Some 5,000 firms, about half of them German, exhibited at this year's fair in April. Many of them Chinese, a sign of Germany's success in exporting beyond the euro zone to high-growth Asian markets. Premier Wen Jiabao visited with Merkel.

The euro zone stayed largely in the background, said Wolfram von Fritsch, chairman of the board of Deutsche Messe which runs the trade fairs.

German exporters had proven their resilience by bouncing back strongly from the 2008-09 global financial crisis, he said. He, too, reached for a weather metaphor to describe how German businesses were locating markets in temperate climes.

"The euro crisis is seen as a kind of natural disaster. Like rain or snow, it is something we can't change, so let's just focus on our main business."

FREE WOMEN?S WORKSHOPS (JULY)?

WIRE Women?s Information is offering free women?s workshops ?Getting Control of Your Money After Family Violence? to women who have experienced financial abuse in a family violence situation. These workshops funded by Consumer Affairs Victoria, will run in July 2012 in various locations across Victoria including Geelong, Mildura, Stawell, Warragul, Wodonga, Blackburn, West Footscray, Noble Park, Preston and CBD Melbourne.

Last year, over 12,000 women contacted WIRE for support, and at least 1 in 3 were seeking help with family violence, which often included financial abuse. ?Women who have lived with family violence are not only traumatised emotionally and physically; they also find themselves cut off from any income or savings, and left with debts,? said WIRE Financial Literacy Project Worker Sally Marsden. ?

Since changes in the Family Law Legislation Amendment (Family Violence and Other Measures) Act 2011 commenced on 7 June 2012, the revised definition of ?family violence? now includes ?socially and financially controlling behaviour?. Examples of men?s financially abusive behaviour may include

controlling and denying money for food and other daily necessities
putting loans, bills and contracts in their wife?s or partner?s name
putting the family home and other assets solely under their own name
controlling whether their wife or partner worked
prioritising their own needs and wishes over the family?s needs

These free workshops will assist women to better understand tactics of financial abuse and learn how to regain control over their own money.? (Please note that these workshops are unsuitable for women currently in crisis situations.) Each workshop consists of 2 sessions held during school hours from 9.45am to 2.45pm (session dates vary with workshop location). ?While all workshops are free, places are limited.

Google brings incremental app updates, added encryption measures to Android

Google has just announced a new feature for Google Play that's sure to please anyone who's sat though an app update that never seemed to end. It now offers what it calls "Smart App Updates," which will let developers provide incremental updates to apps instead of forcing people to download a whole new APK for every minor update. On average, Google says those should be about a third the size of typical updates. What's more, the company has also announced that it's bringing added encryption measures to Android, which will let paid apps be encrypted with a device-specific key that makes them harder to rip and share. Both features will supported on Android devices running Gingerbread or above.

Denny's Commercial Mentioning Second Amendment Earns Conservative Praise

We are always amazed (and sometimes delighted) by the inability to recognize irony. In what appears to be an enthusiastic, if potentially misguided response to brand-messaging, conservative groups across America are throwing their support behind Denny's for an ad for their "Tour of America" campaign. They seem to think the ad shows that Denny's believes the right to bear arms is "what makes America the greatest country in the world."

As AdWeek notes, this sudden swell of support seems to be rooted in the same soil as this week's widespread conservative criticism of Oreo's nod to Pride Week. Offended commenters went ballistic with threats to boycott Oreo and its parent companies for supporting something they didn't agree with. Which makes right-wing blog Conservative Refocus News' commentary on the matter stand in pretty hilariously stark ironic contrast:

It probaby won't be long before a bunch of radical, Obama loving, America hating Liberals begin protesting this particular All-American Restaurant for actually celebrating what makes America great.

Over on DefensiveCarry.com, a firearm enthusiast forum, there seems to be debate raging over whether Denny's mention of the Second Amendment is a pro or a con, considering that they were sort of joking about it. This polarizing discussion currently has forum members split between "Pro" (42%) and "Who Cares?" (32%).

We are certainly not suggesting that Denny's doesn't believe America is a great country, but rather that the man in the commercial was probably going to say that what makes America great is "the fact that there are meat, potatoes AND cheese in the sandwich I'm about to shove in my face." That is, before his patriotic (and highly articulate) children and fellow patrons made him feel sheepish.

A Suprise Mini Backyard Spruce Up #KmartOutdoor - The WiC Project

There are people in this world are are very giving. The kind of people that will give you their last dollar if you need it. Who will listen, support, and encourage you. I am fortunate enough to know such a person, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to pay his kindness forward by treating him at a surprise mini backyard spruce up.

My mission, which I chose to accept, was to stealthily visit the local Kmart undetected and pick up a few critical items that would be needed for this surprise. Luckily, this person has been talking for weeks, if not months, about how he wants to get a nice patio set for his deck. He also mentioned that he was interested in a water fountain for the soothing and relaxing sounds. I wasn?t sure what I would find at Kmart but I went in with determination.

I easily found the Outdoor Living section and was impressed. They had a wide selection of patio sets, outdoor furniture, and outdoor decor items. You can take a look at some of the items that were available through my shopping album. For some more products and outdoor decorating ideas, you can also browse the?Kmart Outdoor Catalog. The Kmart Social Circular also has some great ideas of how you can make your outdoor space as comfortable as your indoor space. With so many great options, it took me quite awhile to finally decide which table and decorations I would get. Here were my final selections:

When I check out at Kmart, I made sure to use my Shop Your Way Rewards card. If you don?t have your card, you should. Along with earning points that you can redeem for cash off your purchase, you also receive some amazing coupons and offers when you check out.

Once I got everything home, it was time to let the sprucing up begin. Starting out, we just had a plain ?ole deck with a doghouse. There isn?t any place to sit, there are no decorations, and the only shade comes late in the afternoon when the sun falls beneath the roof.

Backyard Before

First, I set-up the little welcome bunny. I didn?t get a chance to pick up a plant yet, but the bunny is sitting next to the gate, welcoming everyone to the deck. If you love the bunny as much as I do, know that it?s currently on sale for just $27.99, marked down from $40.99.

Now that the entrance was ready, I set-up the bistro patio set. This set fit perfectly on the deck, providing comfortable seating for two while still leaving enough room to walk around. It was easy to assemble and looked amazing.

For some added shade, I set-up the umbrella next to it. I made sure to pick-up an umbrella base to keep it standing up.

For the finishing touch, I set-up the 3-vase water fountain on the other side of the gate. I filled it with water and powered it on. The yard was immediately filled with the soothing sound of running water.

From start to finish, it took just a little under an hour to get everything set-up. The longest part was assembling the table, which was still very quick and easy to do.

When the spruced up yard was finally revealed, it was total amazement. I heard ?I was just talking about needing a patio set for the yard!? and ?I was wanting to get a water fountain!? It was a wonderful feeling knowing that I was able to give something that was wanted to someone who never asks for anything and it was great knowing that I was able to bring a big smile to his face. There were hugs, grins and enjoyment all around.
