Tagliabue holds Saints bounties hearing in DC

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and lawyers for the league and the players' union have wrapped up a hearing in the Saints bounties case.

Tagliabue is overseeing the latest round of player appeals in Washington.

Former Saints assistant Mike Cerullo, a key witness in the NFL's investigation, was scheduled to speak Thursday. Former New Orleans defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is to participate in Friday's session.

Two Saints players who were suspended, linebacker Jonathan Vilma and defensive end Will Smith, have said they plan to attend when Williams is there.

Vilma's lawyer attended Thursday's day-long hearing at an office building. Tagliabue and lawyers who attended Thursday declined comment when they left.

After 1 key witness in bounty appeal, now Williams

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Lawyers for players appealing NFL suspensions in the New Orleans Saints bounties case cross-examined one key witness Thursday. Now they're supposed to get a chance to confront another central figure: former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.

Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue is overseeing the latest round of player appeals; former Saints assistant coach Mike Cerullo was scheduled to take questions Thursday. Lawyers for the league and the NFL Players Association spent more than nine hours in a Washington office building.

"I am keeping with the direction of the commissioner to not talk about this," NFL senior vice president Adolpho Birch said on his way out.

Tagliabue has insisted on keeping the contents of the private hearings under wraps. He and various lawyers attending Thursday's session declined to comment afterward.

Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma and defensive end Will Smith have said they plan to be present Friday when Williams is slated to be there. New Orleans was playing at the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night.

Vilma and Smith ? along with two former Saints, free-agent defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove and Cleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujita ? were suspended by the NFL for the Saints' cash-for-hits program that the league says Williams ran from 2009 to 2011.

Smith, suspended four games, and Vilma, suspended for the entire current season, have been playing while their appeals are pending.

The NFL has described Vilma and Smith as ringleaders of a performance pool designed to knock targeted opponents out of games. The league has sworn statements from Williams and Cerullo saying Vilma offered $10,000 to anyone who knocked quarterback Brett Favre out of the NFC championship game at the end of the 2009 season.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued the initial suspensions, which also included a full-season ban for Saints head coach Sean Payton.

Lawsuits brought by Vilma and the NFL Players Association to challenge Goodell's handling of the case, including his decision in October to appoint Tagliabue as the arbitrator for the appeals, are pending in federal court in New Orleans.

On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan gave the parties until Monday to answer questions about whether the NFL's collective bargaining agreement prevents a commissioner from handing out discipline for legal contact, and whether the CBA's passages about detrimental conduct are "ambiguous, hence unenforceable."

Numbers drawn for record Powerball jackpot

CHICAGO (AP) -- The numbers have been drawn for the record Powerball jackpot and the wait for winners ? if any ? has begun.

The numbers drawn Wednesday night are: 5, 16, 22, 23, 29 and Powerball of 6.

A lottery official said late Wednesday that the jackpot increased to $579.9 million by the time of the drawing, making the cash option $379.8 million.

Americans went on a ticket-buying spree in recent days, the big money enticing many people who rarely, if ever, play the lottery to purchase a shot at the second-largest payout in U.S. history.

Among them was Lamar Fallie, a jobless Chicago man who said his six tickets conjured a pleasant daydream: If he wins, he plans to take care of his church, make big donations to schools and then "retire from being unemployed."

Tickets were selling at a rate of 130,000 a minute nationwide ? about six times the volume from a week ago. That meant the jackpot could climb even higher before the Wednesday night drawing, said Chuck Strutt, executive director of the Multi-State Lottery Association.

The jackpot had already rolled over 16 consecutive times without a winner, but Powerball officials said earlier Wednesday they believed there was a 75 percent chance the winning combination will be drawn this time.

If one ticket hits the right numbers, chances are good that multiple ones will, according to some experts. That happened in the Mega Millions drawing in March, when three ticket buyers shared a $656 million jackpot, which remains the largest lottery payout of all time.

Yvette Gavin, who sold the tickets to Fallie, is only an occasional lottery player herself, but the huge jackpot means she'll definitely play this time. As for the promises she often gets from ticket purchasers, Gavin isn't holding her breath.

"A lot of customers say if they win they will take care of me, but I will have to wait and see," she said.

In the hours before Wednesday's drawing, Associated Press photographers across the nation sought out ticket buyers and asked about their lottery fantasies. Here's a look at what they found:

___

When Atlanta barber Andre Williams buys scratch-off tickets, he typically does a dance in his shop for good luck. As a first-time Powerball player, he plans to reprise the dance ? and buy a few extra tickets to enhance his chances.

I don't even know if I'll look at it," said Williams, who bought his ticket at a newsstand. "If I win, I might pass out."

Paralegal Pat Powell was buying her first Powerball ticket at another store in Atlanta, even though she acknowledged her odds were probably "zero to zero."

Still, Powell has specific plans should she win: start an Internet cafe in the West Indies and a learning center in Georgia.

"I've been thinking about winning this money and what I'd do with it," Powell said. "There's no ritual, but it's just been on my mind. So it's like, let me just join the hype and just do it."

Atlanta accountant Benita Lewis, who had never played the lottery before, didn't want to be the only one left in her office without a ticket.

"I did feel nervous buying it like I could be the one," she said. "I'm going to retire and pay off all my family's debt."

___

In Philadelphia, seafood salesman Billy Fulginiti bought 50 Powerball tickets with co-workers and a few more with a small group. He said he only plays when the jackpot is especially large.

"You go to bed at night wishing you wake up a millionaire," Fulginiti said. He planned to take a long vacation and "help a lot of people, a lot of charities," if any of his tickets turn out to be winners.

___

Powerball purchases at the Canterbury Country Store in Canterbury, N.H., have been so steady that the manager has been working extra evening hours to keep up.

Horticulturist Kevin Brags buys tickets at the store two to three times a month. He says he usually picks numbers higher than 32 because so many people use numbers 31 and lower, largely because of birthdays.

The birthday theory didn't scare off Paul Kruzel, a retired doctor who chooses the days his children were born.

Both, however, have the same plans for winning: "make a lot of people happy."

John Olson has a more elaborate idea: He'd like to buy an island.

___

At a downtown Detroit convenience store, Ceejay Johnson purchased five Powerball tickets. If she strikes it rich, the analyst from Southfield, Mich., said she would buy a home for her sister in Florida. Then she would "go into hiding" and take care of her family.

"And the IRS," she added.

'Hobbit' premiere draws estimated 100,000 fans

Peter Jackson with his daughter Katie Jackson on the red carpet at the world premiere of "The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey."

By Pip Bulbeck, The Hollywood Reporter

An estimated hundred thousand New Zealanders turned out along the 1,600-foot red carpet, which took the stars two hours to negotiate at the world premiere of Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" in the New Zealand capital of Wellington on Wednesday afternoon local time.

The event took place nine years after the red carpet was rolled out to host the premiere of the "Fellowship of The Ring" on the same streets.

PHOTOS: The hard road to "The Hobbit"

Elijah Wood, who reprises his role as Frodo Baggins in the "Hobbit" films, said he was relying on muscle memory to take him to the Embassy Theater, where many of the cast and crew saw the completed film for the first time.

A large international press contingent and others were the first to see the film at a screening Monday night, but were under a strict embargo that kept people from commenting on or reviewing the film before the end of the premiere.

PHOTOS: Meet "The Hobbit's" key characters

But Wood paid tribute to Martin Freeman?in the lead role of Bilbo Baggins. "He was brilliant -- the right amount of funny," he said. "He has strange qualities, but also real heart. He is the heart of the movie, and he really pulled it off."

Attendees also lauded the technical quality of the film and its higher frame rate.

Richard Armitage, who plays dwarf leader Thorin Oakenshield, said about working with Jackson: ?The thing that inspires me is that he?s as fascinated with technology and where film can go as he is with story and character. Something incredible has been created that?s never been seen before."

PHOTOS: "The Hobbit": 17 new posters introduce characters going on "An Unexpected Journey"

Director/producer Bryan Singer tweeted:? "Just saw ?#Hobbit?. Having some serious frame rate envy. Amazing and involving. Loved it! And ?@ianmckellen118?, my friend, you are brilliant!"

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, who allowed the film to keep shooting in New Zealand by changing labor laws and underwriting an extra $25 million in incentives two years ago said: ?New Zealand took a risk investing in 'The Hobbit,'? and ?it's paid off.? Jackson, he said, is a ?genius.?

Oscar winner Joe Letteri,?Weta Digital?s head of visual effects, was somewhat more reserved, saying that ?after tonight we?ve got he rest of the story to tell. ?Weta Workshop tweeted: ?To all of you who have joined us for the wild ride leading up to this day - a big thank you from the Weta team."

REUTERS/Mark Coote

Cast and crew pose on stage at the world premiere.

It seems demand to see the film in its native higher bit rate of 48 frames per second is high, at least in New Zealand, with sessions at those cinemas screening at the higher frame rate selling out, according to reports. The film formally opens in New Zealand on Dec. 14. According to the NZ Herald, a decision by exhibitors Hoyts and Event Cinemas to dedicate a screen in every theater to projecting the film at the higher frame rate has created a rush for tickets.

It has been reported that only 1,000 cinemas worldwide will have the capacity to screen the film in the higher frame rate in 3-D.

Fans worldwide were able to watch the red carpet proceedings live on the Internet thanks to a feed from Warner Bros.

Tourism New Zealand is expecting a boost in the tens of millions of dollars from the "Hobbit" films. Meanwhile, Jackson said he would take a short break before getting back to post-production on the second and third films after Christmas.

And Graham McTavish, who plays dwarf Dwalin, revealed that there would be another two months of film work in May next year for some of the cast.

As Jackson finishes work on the second and third films, another duo of blockbuster sequels is being created not far from Jackson?s hometown.

Avatar director James Cameron told reporters on the red carpet that he has taken up residence on his new farm in Wairapa, a short flight from Wellington, to write "Avatar 2" and "3."

He told reporters that he needed the solitude so he could give the scripts his full attention. However, he was enjoying his new home so much that it was distracting him, he added.

And as befits a family film, Weta Workshop chief Richard Taylor?acknowledged that he was waiting to see the finished "Hobbit" with his family, while Jackson walked the red carpet with his daughter Katie, who was just three years old when work on the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy started. Asked if she wanted to follow the family movie-making tradition -- her mother Fran Walsh?is Jackson?s co-writer and co producer -- she quipped: ?You never know, I might carry it on.? Jackson, obviously pleased at the prospect, said ?she?s extremely clever. It?d be fantastic if she did.?

While Jackson was the first to arrive on the red carpet, he also had the last word.

?It's been two years with this narrow focus on the film where we were trying to keep everybody out," he said. "You have security, you don't want people to know what you're doing. Then you get to that moment where filming's over, and 100,000 people come along to the premiere. It's kind of like the whole world has turned upside down."

Bold Three to land Nottingham?s Betfred Still Treble Odds On Lucky 15's Gents Trophy

While many others are still struggling for form, Bold Three seems to have regained momentum. After facing embarrassment respectively at Coventry and Monmore, the brindle dog reached Nottingham 10 days ago, when showing a flawless effort over 500 metres.

The P. Sallis-trained began his run from the fourth box, and led soon after the start. He did well to avoid a nudge from the neighbours, and ran clearly until the finishing line. An impeccable performance guided him to a comfortable 3?-length triumph over Teejaysblackhawk.

The son of Scarty Lad has returned to form, and more goods are expected from him. Wednesday?s Betfred Still Treble Odds On Lucky 15's Gents Trophy is an ideal chance for him to add another win to his tally, and we don?t see him losing this opportunity. He is not facing a strong opposition, but still one hundred percent is required.

Other hounds in the pack are: Newmarket Flyway, Tyrur Willyjoe, Skywalker Champ, Master Mac and Lacken Heights. The proceedings are due to start at 21:25 GMT. A cash prize of 500 pounds is reserved for the winner of this 500 metres open event.

Most of Bold Three?s rivals are out-of-form at the moment. Tyrur Willyjoe, who is enjoying the second highest odds of 5 to 2, is not in fine rhythm these days. After winning an open event here at the start of this month, the fawn dog completely lost his direction, and faced a couple of awful defeats lately.

Newmarket Flyway also suffered a humiliating loss last time. The black dog got crowded at the second bend and as a result, finished fifth behind Killieford Khali. A special effort is required to do the magic.

Lacken Heights has the draw in favour. He has run well in the recent trials, but still does not earn our trust. Master Mac is undergoing a lean patch. The white and black dog was fourth on his previous four trips.

Skywalker Champ was humiliated by Slippery Patch at Romford a few days ago. The black dog got bumped in the middle, and consequently ended up last in the list.

Steelers QB Roethlisberger testing hurt shoulder

(AP) ? Ben Roethlisberger doesn't sound like a guy who plans on playing against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

The injured Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback said Thursday he's still in significant pain from the sprained right shoulder and dislocated ribs that have forced him to sit out Pittsburgh's last two games.

Roethlisberger said "there's always a chance" he could play against the Ravens but isn't sure his injured arm will cooperate. When asked if the issue is pain or arm strength, Roethlisberger said "both."

The Steelers (6-5) are 0-2 since Roethlisberger left in the third quarter of a 16-13 overtime win against Kansas City on Nov. 12. It's unlikely Pittsburgh can catch the Ravens (9-2) even with a win this week, but Roethlisberger said that won't affect the team's decision on whether to rest him another week or not.

Tips To Help You Buy Real Estate | Overseas Property

If you haven?t bought property before, you are probably searching for some tips that will help you buy a nice property for a good price. This article will provide some tips to help you get started on the way to real estate success.

When looking at a potential home, have a professional inspection done. Even though it will cost you to hire someone to do this, do not try to get a relative or friend to do this for you. If you do not use a professional then you may have little recourse if something is missed during the inspection.

Numerous programs are available to assist with a down payment on property, and you should research them to determine which one you could qualify for. If you can do this and have the seller pay the closing costs, you can save a considerable amount of money off the purchase of your home.

So you are in the market for a new home, but before you begin you need to locate a real estate agent that is qualified. You?ll want to find an agent you can trust. You want to find an agent who has been in the business for a while, and has a track record of proven success that can lead you down the right path. It is in your best interest to take the time to look for someone you can rely on.

Real Estate

The appraiser that you choose for your real estate should always have a lot of experience; five years at the least. If your real estate agency recommends an appraiser to you, find someone else. This represents a possible conflict of interest. Ensure your appraiser is state-certified or state-licensed.

Talk to other investors in real estate. There?s a lot of options when it comes to real estate, but the most important factor is finding the property that is correct for you. It?s a great method to find a diamond in the rough that others haven?t found.

If you are buying a home, hire your support team yourself. The agent and seller are going to hire people that will make them look the best, so be careful. The bottom line is no one wants to spend money on something that they can get for free. Nevertheless, you can benefit greatly from hiring your own professionals who are trustworthy and will be working for your best interests. This is one situation where learning the truth can potentially save you thousands of dollars and much heartache.

Do not rush into purchasing real estate without doing your homework. Don?t make the mistake of purchasing property on impulse because that can be a risk that results in the loss of a money and time investment. Therefore, prior to purchasing any specific property, it is important to investigate the neighborhood, crime rates, repairs needed on the property, and any other relevant details.

If it?s affordable, don?t buy a home that backs or faces a busy road. Though these houses usually cost less when compared to homes in the middle, they are that way for a good reason. While having a busy roadside home may not be a bother to you, there will be little resale value in the property when it comes time to move on.

Find a good, experienced broker or real estate agent to work with you while you look for potential investment properties. These people have resources you can use that you may not have direct access to yourself. One of the useful tools brokers work with is special software that sorts through MLS listings based on various types of criteria. While you can search through MLS on your own, these tools can make the process much more efficient and will allow you to find great deals that you would have otherwise missed.

If you are purchasing a home just for yourself, it is still wise to bring someone with you, especially someone who has experience with home buying. An experienced home buyer might notice problems with a house that you might not have seen. Try to get them to ask some things from the realtor.

Try to think about the long term when you are buying a new home. If you plan on living in the home you purchase, then you might want to view the nearby schools even if you do not have kids. You might want them someday, and it?s better to be safe than sorry.

You need a business partner you can trust, when purchasing an expensive parcel of commercial property. Qualifying for a large loan is more difficult for a single purchaser than a partnership. Having a good partner will help you with a down payment, while also making the commercial loan qualification process much easier.

Be pre-qualified for a mortgage loans before looking at houses. A key advantage to doing this is to avoid finding your dream home to then find out you can not get a mortgage that covers the asking price. In addition, the application and qualification processes for obtaining a loan can take a long time, and it is inadvisable to put it off for too long.

Before you begin searching for a new home, get a copy of your credit report. Once you have your credit report in your hand you need to thoroughly look over it and see if there are any problems with it; report any discrepencies. You want to make sure your credit is in good shape as you head into the home buying process; this will help you secure a mortgage.

Approval Letter

If you already have an approval letter, a seller will be more interested in your offer. A pre-approval letter from a lending institution usually cuts down on the time it will take for you to go to closing because much of the paperwork has already been handled by the prospective lender.

Just like any other product, your home should have a warranty. When you buy a brand-new home, get the builder to provide a warranty, or get the seller of a pre-owned home to provide you with at least a one-year warranty. The builder should be willing to back up his or her workmanship for at least several years. If the home was previously occupied, ask the previous owner to buy a home warranty so that you won?t be out thousands of dollars if things break.

Learn about what kinds of houses exist in the neighborhoods you?re looking to buy in. Your findings from that research will be helpful, because you don?t necessarily want to spend money on the most expansive or upgraded house on the street. If you decide to sell the house in the future, it will be difficult for you to obtain the value of the house. This is because every other competing house in the neighborhood will cost less.

If you don?t have steady or stable income, be hesitant about buying that home. As soon as you sign your mortgage papers, you become responsible for the payments on the property, no matter what your circumstances are. If you do not have a steady job or income, you must be certain that you have enough money to cover the payments for a few months until you find another source of income.

Closing Costs

Make sure that you have a little bit of extra money put away in case any unexpected costs pop up when you?re buying a home. Buyers find your closing costs via adding your down payment, the bank points, and the real estate taxes that are pro-related. However, additional expenses are frequently added to the closing costs, including improvement bonds, school taxes, and other location-specific items.

Be open to different possibilities. Sometimes you must choose between two major features if the price of having both falls outside of your price range. If you can?t find the house you want in the location you desire, look for that type of layout in an alternate location or vice versa.

When you want to add more value to the property you own, do some remodeling and repair work. Your property?s value will increase quickly if you do this. In fact, the value of the home may even go up more then you actually invested in it.

As you can tell, real estate transactions can be stressful and wrought with complications. However, you can avoid these pitfalls with research and common sense. Follow our tips and you?re sure to become wise to the ways of the real estate market.

Blue widgets are a fascinating subject that has a lot of data. Taking time to read as much as you can concerning Overseas Property will help you better understand the topic. This article is a great start, but read others as well.

Personal Branding Interview: Tim Ferriss on The 4-Hour Chef ...

I recently spoke to Tim Ferriss, who is author of the #1 New York Times best sellers The 4-Hour Workweek and The 4-Hour Body. He?s been called ?The Superman of Silicon Valley? by Wired, one of Fast Company?s ?Most Innovative Business People? and ?the world?s best guinea pig? by Newsweek, which ranked him in its top 10 ?most powerful? personalities on the 2012 Digital 100 Power Index. Marco Canora, the Chef-Partner of Hearth & Terroir, says that ?If you crossed Jason Bourne with Julia Child, you?d end up with Tim Ferriss.? His popular blog was named by Inc. Magazine as one of ?19 Blogs You Should Bookmark Right Now.?

Tim?s latest book is called The 4-Hour Chef: The Simple Path to Cooking Like a Pro, Learning Anything, and Living the Good Life. This book is very different from Tim?s previous books since there are more than 1,500 photographs and hundreds of illustrations throughout. The 4-Hour Chef will make for the perfect holiday gift for everyone, wannabe chef or not. For those who buy three copies of the book, Tim is going to offer them an exclusive live Q&A with him after launch week. All you have to do is purchase the books on Amazon and email the receipt to 3books@4hourchef.com.

In this abbreviated interview (the full interview is in my Forbes column), Tim talks about the common misconceptions about learning, how to become self-sufficient in your trade, and more.

What are the common misconceptions of learning and what new truths does your book reveal about it?

Actually, one of the bigger misconceptions of learning is that many skills take a lifetime to get world-class at, or 10,000 hours to become world-class at. If you want to be Tiger Woods at age eight, you?re going to know you have the potential because you?ll be drawing sketches of people hitting balls with different irons, which he was, instead of pirate ships. But, if you want to be the best in your circle of friends or in the top five percent in the U.S. population at golf, swimming, Spanish, Japanese, whatever it might be, I firmly believe that you can accomplish that in most cases six months or less. I find it?s easier to disprove most of the limitations of learning, most of the really burdensome aspects of learning really, really quickly.

To be functionally fluent in a language, for instance, in most cases you need about 1,200 words. To acquire a total of vocabulary words if you really train someone well they can acquire 200 to 300 words a day which means that in a week they can acquire the vocabulary necessary to speak a language. Now, of course, then they need practice and the basic frameworks to grammar and what not. It?s something that routinely would take someone a year or two or three or more if they use more traditional methods and it?s just not necessary and it?s not particularly effective. One great historical example, the Fosbury Flop.

The Fosbury Flop is a high jump technique named after Dick Fosbury in the 1968 Olympics where most people were using a scissor technique or a straddle technique to get a high jump. He was the first person to go over backwards with a back arch. People laughed and people mocked the Fosbury Flop and then he won the gold medal and they stopped laughing and now everyone uses his technique. Up until that point in time, it was believed the way you performed the high jump was with a scissor kick or a straddle jump and a couple things happened; number one, Fosbury asked himself ?why are we following these rules that are actually not rules at all, they?re just self-imposed, number one.?

Number two, instead of a packed, hard surface the high jump was making the transition to a soft, padded landing which meant you could do things differently. And similarly now, if you?re trying to learn how to do, let?s say, a pop up on a surfboard, I learned to do a pop up on a surfboard using Skype video from a rainy apartment in Berlin communicating with Brad Gerlach, former number one ranked surfer in the world from his apartment in Los Angeles. Instead of a soft landing mat, the tool that I?m using to accelerate my progress with surfing is Skype video. A lot of the learning and teaching recommendations are still stuck a few hundred years in the past.

Do you believe in Malcolm Gladwell?s rule of 10,000 hours to master something?

I think it?s a very helpful sound bite. Malcolm Gladwell is an incredible storyteller. I think that correlation does not equal causation and that his message applied in certain instances can be certain to be true. You can find anomalies that violate that left and right. What I would say is I don?t personally believe the 10,000 hour rule needs to apply in most places. What my job has been is to rather than look at the averages?I?m sure you?ve heard the joke ?Bill Gates walks into a bar and the average net worth of everyone in the bar jumps to 500 million dollars?? Averages can be very misleading and what I?ve done whether it?s with The 4-Hour Body, The 4-Hour Workweek and now in The 4-Hour Chef is look for the anomalies. Who are the people who can learn Icelandic in seven days, who are the people who can memorize a shuffle deck of cards in less than 60 seconds? And then, can I replicate it? Do they have a method and can I replicate their results? So I don?t personally subscribe to the 10,000 hour rule.

How do you become self-sufficient in your trade? What did you learn from some of the people you interviewed about becoming self-sufficient?

A few things. The first thing, and this is another reason that I wrote The 4-Hour Chef and decided to focus on cooking is that I realized I really wasn?t building anything with my hands. There was a lot I was doing in the digital world of computers but I didn?t have the ability to build things with my hands and I got really kind of anxious about this. I had felt like I had lost some really important part of my humanness and originally it was going to be woodworking but for a whole host of reasons?the studio?s too far away; I have to get the material; Like what am I going to do with the crappy birdhouse that I make? I didn?t end up doing it. Food became for me a way of becoming self-sufficient with my hands to regain manual literacy which I think has been lost on our generation and certainly younger generations. Very few people can actually make things with their hands and do things with their hands.

It?s not that one is better than the other but certainly becoming more comfortable with foraging, becoming more comfortable with hunting if I have to, becoming more comfortable with creating shelter from scratch, and learning like the six most important knots that you can use for whether its camping or jury rigging things in your house or survival. All of those I came to by wanting to re-engage my hands. I think all of those skills are very fast and easy to learn. They are really, really rewarding in a way that is hard to put into words because you?re reclaiming this fundamental humanness. Like early animal nature that I think is really undervalued in a sort of a white collar digital world but those would be a few of the places that I would focus.

For instance, you could say well ?why would I ever learn knife skills if I can just use a food processor?? To that I would say, well there are a few reasons. Number one, knife skills are much more flexible and I introduce them way later than most cookbooks so you?ll never be afraid of them and you won?t cut yourself. Secondly, there is something inherently gratifying about knowing how to use a knife really well. It is so gratifying and I never expected that I would have such a strong emotional and psychological response to learning these things.

One of my friends asked me ?if you lost electricity for two years, what would you do??

Yes, exactly. What if you lost electricity for three days? You know, what happens to the food in your refrigerator? What happens to potable water? These are things that most people, even in a place like New York City or certainly San Francisco, where there is a history of earthquakes that have taken out power and what not for a week to ten days at a time; they?re completely unprepared for it. I get into all that stuff in the wild section of the book which is kind of the point of that section. It?s a good exercise at the very least. It makes you think about the world differently.

What are the best ways to develop the right career related skills to become a more desirable employee? What about entrepreneur related skills?

In terms of developing the right career related skills, and entrepreneur related skills, there are few that come to mind. One is time management; whether you want to be an entrepreneur or the best employee in a company, I think the skillset is still very similar. I would break it down to three things: time management, being both efficient and effective; then you have communication written and all; and then you have negotiation written and all. I think those three skills determine much of success in the modern professional world.

As far as time management, being effective and efficient goes, I think The 4-Hour Work Week synthesizes a lot of what I had read and learned but there are other books that are fantastic like Peter Drucker?s The Effective Executive. It?s a fantastic short read that I think is very timeless in its recommendations and choosing the right things as opposed to just getting good at doing a lot of things quickly is very, very important. The critical difference between what you do and how you do things; and what you do is more important; choosing those things; choosing the things you focus on.

A very large part of that of being effective is large blocks of time. It?s Paul Graham?s Makers Versus Managers Schedule, where you really need two to three hour blocks of time if you?re creating things. No combination or accumulation of 20 minute breaks will ever equal a single, uninterrupted block of three hours. Then communication wise. Of course, without communication, very little gets done and I think in a business world it gets very jargon-y and very long winded very quickly. There are a few books I really like. One of them is On Writing Well by William Zinsser. There are certainly others but just really being straight and to the point without coming off as really rude is a skill.

Learning how to craft e-mails to minimize back and forth. Like ?can you make lunch at four o?clock? and then it?s like ?no, when can you make lunch?oh, what about this, what about that? and you?re have seventeen back and forths instead of just saying ?can you make this, this or this time? just to suggest times on this or this day. Like ?if so, I?ll meet you here and here?s a link to directions? type of thing so you do the extra 30 seconds of thinking on the front-end to avoid the extra hour of back and forth and nonsense on the backend. And then from a negotiation standpoint, I?ve written pretty extensively about this kind of stuff in the past as well but the ability to become a good deal maker. Whether you?re a salesperson or a negotiator or anything in between, you have to get good at crafting deals. That could be good for job opportunities; that could be negotiating with your boss; could be negotiating with suppliers, it?s all the same skillset. I think for that, there are a few books I?ve found very helpful. One of which is Getting Past No, which is written by one of the co-authors of its predecessor Getting to Yes but I think Getting Past No is a more realistic take on what actually happens in the real world.

What is the 80/20 rule and how do you apply it?

The 80/20 rule is Pareto?s Law is the principle or concept that you can get 80% of your desired outcomes from 20% of the activities or inputs can be applied everywhere in cooking. So for instance, I studied chefs and looked at how they answered the question ?if you went to a deserted island and could only take one herb or spice with you, what would it be?? And then I looked for patterns and answers among the top chefs identifying ?gear?. One of the most frustrating aspects of cooking to me when I tried it in the past is when I would pick up a cookbook and be like ?sweet, these recipes look amazing? and then in the very beginning in fine print somewhere it be like ?okay, before we get started you?re just going to need these following things? and it was like preparing for the Tour de France with this like $3,000 worth of gear that I didn?t have the budget for nor did I have the space for.

I really did a very hard 80/20 analysis of different gear. It?s like alright I?m going to get you a $12 knife that no one?s ever heard of, a Microplane, a pastry scraper for cleaning crap off your cutting boards and a couple of other things and you?re off to the races. For less than $100, boom, you?re ready to go; you?re ready to make amazing food. I crammed six months of culinary school into 48 hours with the help of someone who used to teach at culinary school. So choosing all of the most powerful and versatile techniques of culinary school and compressing them into training and dishes over 48 hours was very fascinating and eye opening. That?s another exercise in choosing the highest leverage, highest impact gems; finding the needles in the haystack.

I apply the 80/20 rule everywhere. Looking for the internal dialogue, so the questions that chefs ask themselves when they create their best dishes or their most creative dishes. I went through that with a number of the top rated chefs in the entire county and the world to identify what is their actual thought process when they?re putting together something amazing, can you break that down into five questions that you just check off; that you can literally create as an algorithm or recipe in your head to get better results and the answer is yes, you can do that. It?s pretty much reflected on every page of the book. It could?ve been called The 80/20 Chef.

What Does Your Social Brand Say About You Online? | Small ...

You know that social media marketing is here to stay BIG time, right? ?Are you still kind of fighting how essential it has become? ?Do you believe it will do nothing but grow in importance for business success?

social chat

Consider These Trends

  • While Generation C represents 23% of the US population (US Census data), it represented an out-sized portion of online video consumption (27%), social networking and blog sites visits (27%), tablet ownership (33%) and smartphone use (39%), as of February 2012.

We engage, convene, share, connect, market, help, research, buy, sell, rant, rave and riff online. It?s the other world, the parallel universe we live in when we are not in person and face to face with people.

What Does Your Social Brand Say About You?

How do you present who you are, what you do, whom you serve and why anyone should care on the web?

This is your calling card and?visual home that people will use to determine why connecting with you is viable and has value. Is your web presence active and relevant? Do you engage regularly on the social platforms where your customers, community and colleagues are congregating?

The Illusion of Success

It?s very easy to create an illusion of success and credibility online. People usually believe what they see if they don?t know you. The slick images, buzz words, promises of lot?s of followers, leads, sales and quick success are usually phony carrots people dangle online.

Be careful, get referrals?and get to know good people who are trusted in their circles and platforms. Most importantly, be exactly who you say you are.

Online Image

Your online image will usually get you one chance to make a great first impression. Are your sites and media platforms current, clean, easy to navigate and do all the links work? When someone pulls you up on LinkedIn or goes directly to your sites, are they seeing what you want them to know and see about you now?

Online Messaging

Check all your online copy and marketing messaging and make sure it is timely. Frequently update your pictures, services, testimonials, awards and activities, which show and tell people who you are in real time.

Show people what are you doing NOW!

Serving is the New Selling

Trendwatching?started talking about becoming a ?Brand Butler? in 2010:

?With pragmatic, convenience-loving consumers enjoying instant access to an ever-growing number of supporting services and tools (both offline and online), brands urgently need to hone their ?butlering skills?, focusing on assisting consumers to make the most of their daily lives, versus the old model of selling them a lifestyle if not identity.?

Visual + Visceral = Your Social Brand

How you visually present yourself plus how you viscerally describe your who, what and why?creates your social brand.?Your social brand should inspire people to want to make an emotional connection to and with you. People need to like what they see and believe what you and others say. Your social brand helps them do that.

Check out?the?5 drivers, when reviewing or creating your social brand from Trendwatching, which talks about the? ?Expectation Economy:

?. . .where consumers want the best, they want it now and first, and they want real, human connection, too. In fact, they demand all that.?

Are you using these drivers? And what does your social marketing brand say about you now and what do you need to do to make it stand out?

Cody Rhodes updates WWE Universe on injury, calls Kane a "modern day Dude Love"

For the first time since being injured during a fierce WWE Tag Team Title Match against Team Hell No on WWE Main Event, Rhodes updates the WWE Universe on his status. Rhodes, who has not competed in a match since Nov. 14 due to injuries suffered at the hands of Kane, talks candidly about what?s next for Team Rhodes Scholars and makes eye-raising remarks about The Big Red Monster.

WWE.COM: Can you talk a little about the injury? You?Tweeted that you tore your trap and your deltoid and that you separated your shoulder. Can you talk about the seriousness of such injuries?

CODY RHODES: Well, honestly, the best way I?ve heard the injury described, is that I dodged a bullet. The trap tear is a grade two (on a scale of one to three), but I don?t need surgery ? the tears will heal themselves over time with proper physical therapy. The separated shoulder is an old injury from amateur wrestling, and it?s basically the area that could have been considerably worse. I could have landed on my neck, but I turned just in time to land on my shoulder. The separated shoulder is where the most pain is and it?s the AC joint, but like I said, I dodged a bullet ? no surgery. (WATCH HOW IT HAPPENED)

WWE.COM: How soon did you know you were in trouble, and what was going through your head at the time? Do you remember anything in the ring or backstage after it happened?

RHODES: I thought I broke my arm, and I was in a very bad position in the ring. You know, ring awareness is something I?ve always been fond of ? having ring awareness, having mat awareness. Always knowing where I am at all times. Especially in a tag team situation, knowing if I?m on my side of the ring. I wasn?t. I was in enemy territory and Daniel Bryan had me wide open.

Actually, everything after Kane dropped me, I don?t remember. I remember hitting the mat one more time, and then I thought that I immediately tagged out, but watching back, there?s a whole period of a minute, a minute-and-a-half, where I faked out Daniel Bryan, who missed a headbutt and I just laid there. I didn?t know that ? I thought I was much more cognizant than I was, but watching back I didn?t know that I was on the apron, I didn?t know that the doctor was tugging at my boots.

I just was contemplating in my head ? the only thing I remember thinking was if I could get in there and kick [Daniel Bryan], then tag Damien real quick and tag out, that I could offer something still. Damien looked at me one time after I said, "tag me in," after I got my bearings a little bit, but he certainly had no intentions of tagging me in, at great cost to himself. So I owe Damien Sandow a lot.

WWE.COM: Speaking of your tag team partner, are you still in regular contact with Damien Sandow?

RHODES: We haven?t had as much personal contact as I?d like. One of the things I most look forward to with Damien is our Monday, Wednesday and Friday "war room" sessions where we would discuss everything in the WWE Universe, and all of the Superstars and Divas. It was a real gripe fest, but a nice period of time to vent.

Now he?s navigating the murky waters of singles competiton and I wish him ? genuinely ? good luck. I just hope he doesn?t forget that Team Rhodes Scholars was on a very steep climb to the top.

WWE.COM: In your?TOUT from a couple of days ago, you wished Sandow luck but you also cautioned not to forget "the bigger picture." Is that bigger picture you were referring to winning the WWE Tag Team Titles?

RHODES: It?s not about winning the WWE Tag Team Championship anymore ? and I hate saying that because they are absolutely prestigious in every way, and I?ve been fortunate enough to be a four-time Tag Team Champion.

What I meant by that, is that this is a personal issue, and I hope and I think that Mr. Sandow understands it?s a personal issue. Had I landed on my neck, I would not be able to do this anymore. My boyhood dream of being in WWE and ascending is paramaount. It?s something that ceraintly could have been stopped dead in its tracks ? which is something I thought would never happen, and I hope that Damien realizes how strong of a personal issue it is for me.

And I?ll be honest ? it?s not so much with Team Hell No and their goofy schtick of ?Yes! Yes!" and "No! No!" and "red rules" ? it?s more with Kane. I?m aware of the monster, but I?m also aware of the fact that he?s slowly becoming the modern day Dude Love ? he?s just, I don?t know, disintegrating into a novelty joke and I would certainly like to get my shots in on him before he vanishes completely.

WWE.COM: Wow, those are some strong words. Do you feel that, besides being less intimidating (which I?m gathering from what you just said), do you feel that Kane is less effective and less physical now that he?s a part of Team Hell No?

RHODES: Absolutely not. One thing I won't do, by any means, is disrparage who he was prior. He?s certainly not less physical, and he?s certainly not less intimidating. But the real thing is, what do I have to be intimidated by?

In the state of Ohio alone ? just Ohio ? someone brought this up to me. I lost half my blood supply, practically, in a Street Fight Match against Randy Orton, and then almost a year later, Kane drops me and I end up having the first muscle tears I?ve had in my entire life being an athlete.

I?ve given a great deal. When they talk about paying your dues, I don?t care that I?m 27. I?ve paid a good chunk of them. So coming back, I?m not easily intimidated, I?m not out there to do a "ha ha" bit on Monday Night Raw or Friday Night SmackDown. I?m specifically coming back with something. What do I have to fear?

I?m not coming back to make people laugh. I?m coming back to make people cry.

WWE.COM: So, more important to you than winning the WWE Tag Team Titles is you exacting revenge on Kane?

RHODES: I think they coincide. And as you?ve been asking questions, I realize that they coincide. Winning the WWE Tag Team Championship for the fifth time is the perfect revenge, and it?s the perfect wake-up call for someone like Kane, one of WWE?s resident monsters. [Kane is] genuinely a legend in sports-entertainment, but I would say that he?s on the back end of that legendary career and I have no problem waking the monster up, as people saw with Big Show heading into WrestleMania.

I don?t mind poking the bear. You don?t get anywhere by tiptoeing around anything. Certainly, I?d rather step on toes than tiptoe around anybody.

WWE.COM: Switching gears a bit, how do you think Damien Sandow has performed since your injury?

RHODES: I was disappointed that he was unable to put somebody like Kofi Kingston away, but in the same token, you?re only as good as your last match. And [Damien's] last match was against Zack Ryder [on the Nov. 26 episode of Raw], and he made short work of a very credible Superstar in Zack Ryder, so I think he just has to get back in the rhythm. (WATCH)

When you?ve been in a tag team, and you?ve been on a long European tour, [a singles match] is a different type of match. It?s a different type of breathing for one, and he?s getting his bearings, I hope, and he?s someone who won?t show you if there?s any rust in his singles work. He?ll manage to hide it and that?s one of the things I admire about him, certainly.

You?re only as good as your last match, and his last match ended in a victory for him, so I think he?s doing well.

WWE.COM: Finally, when can the WWE Universe expect you to return to the ring?

RHODES: I am a quick healer and I can fight through pain, but I will not rush my return to the ring. There is no hard timeline for my return.

Apple's ultra-thin iMac to become available on Nov. 30

1 day

Apple announced an upcoming?update to its popular iMac desktop computer line in October, but on Tuesday the Cupertino-based company finally confirmed that the 21.5-inch version of the?new, ultra-thin desktop will be available on Nov. 30.?

"Isn't it amazing how something new makes the previous generation instantly look old?" asked?Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, when he first?unveiled what a press release calls "the most advanced desktop Apple has ever made."?The new iMac looks quite similar to the previous generation from the front, but from the side, it is incredibly clear that the desktop has undergone a significant redesign: It has an edge that's a mere 5 millimeters thin.?There is, of course, a bit of a bulge in the middle of the computer's back, for the sake of some internal components, but it still has about 40 percent less internal volume than its older siblings and weighs about eight pounds less, as NBC News' contributor Joel Johnson pointed out when we first heard about the new iMac.

The new iMac is offered in 21.5-inch and 27-inch versions, which start at $1,300 and $1,800, respectively. The new desktops have displays with 75 percent less reflection than the prior generation and a Fusion Drive option (which combines a standard hard drive and a flash-based one to offer up to 60 percent faster performance).

While the 21.5-inch version of the new iMac will begin arriving in customers' homes on Nov. 30, its?27-inch counterpart won't begin shipping until December, according to a press release issued by Apple.

Personal coaching app tracks sleep, diet, fitness - Dieting -Weight ...

? Dieting ? ? Weight Loss ? ? Sleep Aid ? Nov 26, 2012

Trying to get fit or lose weight but lacking the motivation and willpower? A new app that acts like a digital personal coach monitors fitness, activity, sleep and diet and provides tips for health and productivity.

The app called Larklife gathers data via a wristband and provides personalized advice which is displayed on the smartphone app. It can deduct if the wearer is not getting enough sleep and how sedentary they are, according to its creators.

?In the background it?s as if you had your own personal fitness trainer, productivity coach and sleep coach all working together to give you the easiest way to improve at this moment,? said Julia Hu, CEO and co-founder of the Mountain View, California-based company Lark.

After a poor night?s sleep, for example, the app might suggest extra protein for breakfast, based on research that it can improve mental focus when someone is sleep deprived. Thirty minutes after a workout, it might remind the user to drink water to keep hydrated.

The app is part of the growing wearable technology market, which is expected to nearly double by 2014, according to a report by research firm Juniper Research. Many wearable technology devices connect with smartphone apps to display the data they gather.

There is a growing supply of health and fitness tracking apps and gadgets on the market, including the Nike+ FuelBand, Fitbit and Jawbone UP, but Hu said her product provides real-time advice and does not focus on tracking metrics like calories burned or distance traveled.

?Data is incredibly important as the first step, but the layer on top that everyone is missing is ?what does this actually mean for me?? she said.

Most people don?t care about shaving 10 seconds off their running time, she added, but they do want to lose a few pounds, improve productivity and have more energy.

The Larklife app provides its coaching wirelessly in real-time.

?When we?re building good habits it?s important to have that positive reinforcement in real-time,? Hu explained.

All the advice that the app provides is based on real-time data from the wristband, such as a reminder that the wearer has been sitting for more than 100 minutes and should walk around.

?It?s a gentle nudge and friendly reminder at the time when you?re supposed to be doing it that just pushes you to take that extra little step,? explained Hu.

The company said it developed the app with sleep, nutrition, fitness and circadian rhythm experts and neuroscientists.

For dieters the app automatically logs meal times and can record more detailed information, such as type of food consumed. It will be available for iPhone and iPod touch devices in December. The wristband will be sold in Apple stores and online in the United States in December for $149.99.

Mursi opponents rally in Cairo's Tahrir Square

CAIRO (Reuters) - Opponents of President Mohamed Mursi rallied in Cairo's Tahrir Square for a fifth day on Tuesday, stepping up calls to scrap a decree they say threatens Egypt with a new era of autocracy.

The protest called by leftist, liberal and socialist groups marks an escalation of the worst crisis since the Muslim Brotherhood politician was elected in June and exposes the deep divide between newly empowered Islamists and their opponents.

The crowd is expected to grow in the late afternoon but hundreds were already in the square after many camped overnight. Police fired tear gas and organizers urged demonstrators not to clash with Interior Ministry security forces.

One person - a Muslim Brotherhood activist - has been killed and hundreds more injured in violence set off by a move that has also triggered a rebellion by judges and battered confidence in an economy struggling to recover from two years of turmoil.

Mursi's opponents have accused him of behaving like a modern-day pharaoh. The United States, a big benefactor to Egypt's military, has voiced its concerns, worried by more turbulence in a country that has a peace treaty with Israel.

The protest will test the extent to which Egypt's non-Islamist opposition can rally support. The Islamists have consistently beaten more secular parties at the ballot box in elections held since Hosni Mubarak was toppled in February, 2011.

"We don't want a dictatorship again. The Mubarak regime was a dictatorship. We had a revolution to have justice and freedom," said Ahmed Husseini, 32, who was speaking early on Tuesday in Tahrir Square.

Activists have been camped out in Tahrir Square, scene of the historic uprising against Mubarak, since Friday, blocking it to traffic and clashing intermittently with riot police in nearby streets.

The decree issued by Mursi on Thursday expanded his powers and protected his decisions from judicial review until the election of a new parliament expected in the first half of 2013.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch said it gives Mursi more power than the military junta from which he assumed power.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted judges had challenged the decree in remarks to Austria's Die Presse, adding: "But I have also noted that Mursi wants to resolve the problem in a dialogue. I will encourage him to continue to do so."

AVOIDING CONFRONTATION

In a bid to ease tensions with judges outraged at the step, Mursi has assured the country's highest judicial authority that elements of the decree giving his decisions immunity would apply only to matters of "sovereign" importance. Though that should limit it to issues such as a declaration of war, experts said there was room for a broader interpretation.

In another step to avoid more confrontation, the Muslim Brotherhood cancelled a mass protest it had called in Cairo for Tuesday in support of a decree that has also won the backing of more hardline Islamist groups.

But there has been no retreat on other elements of the decree, including a stipulation that the Islamist-dominated body writing a new constitution be protected from legal challenge.

Its popular legitimacy undermined by the withdrawal of most of its non-Islamist members, the assembly faces a raft of court cases from plaintiffs who claim it was formed illegally.

The new system of government to be laid out in the constitution is one of the issues at the heart of the crisis.

"The president of the republic must put his delusions to one side and undertake the only step capable of defusing the crisis: cancelling the despotic declaration," liberal commentator and activist Amr Hamzawy wrote in his column in al-Watan newspaper.

"We asked for the cancellation of the decree and that did not happen," said Mona Amer, spokeswoman for the opposition movement Popular Current, part of a coalition of parties that are joining forces to challenge the Mursi decree.

Mursi issued the decree a day after his administration won international praise for brokering an end to eight days of violence between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The decree was seen as targeting in part a legal establishment still largely unreformed from Mubarak's era, when the Brotherhood was outlawed.

MEETING HALF WAY

Rulings from an array of courts this year have dealt a series of blows to the Brotherhood, leading to the dissolution of the first constitutional assembly and the parliament elected a year ago. The Brotherhood had a major say in both.

The judiciary blocked an attempt by Mursi to reconvene the Brotherhood-led parliament after his election victory. It also stood in the way of his attempt to sack the prosecutor general, a Mubarak hold over, in October.

In his decree, Mursi gave himself the power to sack that prosecutor and appoint a new one. In open defiance of Mursi, some judges are refusing to acknowledge that step.

But in a sign that other judges were willing to meet Mursi half way, the Supreme Judicial Council, the nation's highest judicial body, proposed Mursi limit the scope of decisions that would be immune from judicial review to "sovereign matters", language the presidential spokesman said Mursi backed.

"The president said he had the utmost respect for the judicial authority and its members," spokesman Yasser Ali told reporters in announcing the agreement on Monday.

Mursi's administration has defended his decree as an effort to speed up reforms and complete a democratic transformation. Leftists, liberals, socialists and others say it has exposed the autocratic impulses of a man once jailed by Mubarak.

Before the president's announcement, leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahy said protests would continue until the decree was scrapped and said Tahrir would be a model of an "Egypt that will not accept a new dictator because it brought down the old one".

Mursi has repeatedly stated the decree will only stay in place until a new parliament is elected - something that can only happen once the constitution is written and passed in a popular referendum.

Though both Islamists and their opponents broadly agree that the judiciary needs reform, his rivals oppose Mursi's methods.
