Obama Campaign Shreds 'Lies' in Ryan Speech

One word describes Democrats' view of Rep. Paul Ryan's address Wednesday night to the Republican National Convention: "lies."

The Obama campaign is criticizing the GOP vice presidential nominee, backed by reports from independent fact-checkers that claim Ryan repeatedly took liberty with the facts.

"There's no delicate way to say this. Last night, Paul Ryan lied. Repeatedly, knowingly and brazenly," deputy Obama campaign manager Stephanie Cutter told reporters today.

"He recited charges that have been repeatedly dismissed by news organizations including many of you in this room and by independent fact checkers, but they just don't care," she said.

A web ad produced by the Obama campaign highlights four lines from Ryan's speech that Democrats say were downright "false."

Ryan said Wednesday that $716 billion were "funneled out of Medicare by President Obama," suggesting the administration had raided the program at the expense of beneficiaries.

In reality, the Affordable Care Act did not alter existing Medicare benefits as guaranteed by law but instead trimmed payments to service providers while reducing waste, fraud and abuse, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Ryan also didn't mention that he proposed the same $716 billion in Medicare savings in his signature budget.

(Republicans claim the trimmed payments will result in some lost benefits and higher costs, particularly for seniors with Medicare Advantage plans.)

Ryan also tied the president to the closure of a GM auto plant in Janesville, Wis., where Obama stumped in 2008 and pledged to help it stay open. But what Ryan didn't mention is that that the plant produced its last GM car and transitioned to standby phase before Obama began his term.

"The president told the people of Wisconsin he would 'lead an effort to retool' it and restart production," said Ryan spokesman Brendan Buck. "But when the bailout's winners and losers were decided, Janesville ended up losing." The plant remains closed.

On the $800 stimulus package, Ryan accused President Obama of "political patronage, corporate welfare and cronyism at their worst." The congressman from Wisconsin did not mention, however, that he too sought a piece of the pie. Letters from his office and with his signature show that he appealed to federal officials for grants on behalf of two state energy conservation companies. (Ryan has since said the letters were mishandled.)

Democrats claim that perhaps the rankest hypocrisy from Ryan came when he slammed Obama for not embracing the deficit-reduction proposals of the Simpson-Bowles Commission. "He thanked them, sent them on their way and did exactly nothing," Ryan said last night. Left unsaid is that Ryan, who was a member of the panel, voted against the same plan.

Ryan spokesman Brendan Buck insisted that, on face value, all of the claims made in the speech were true.

"Instead of admitting that his policies have led to record unemployment, debt that puts our economy at risk, and programs that have grown government at the expense of the private sector, President Obama continues to double down on the same false attacks and policies that have done nothing to fix our economy," he said in a statement.

But Cutter argued today that Ryan demonstrated that his and Romney's campaign has an open strategy of defying the truth.

"Two days ago, a senior adviser to Mitt Romney said, and I quote, 'We're not going to be beholden to fact checks,'" she said, referring to comments earlier this week by Romney pollster Neil Newhouse. "They proved that last night."

ABC News' Elicia Dover and Arlette Saenz contributed to this report.

N. Korea vows to expand nuclear deterrent

North Korea on Friday vowed to expand and modernise its nuclear deterrent "beyond imagination" unless the United States changes its policy towards the communist nation.

The North said in a foreign ministry memorandum that it had developed nuclear weapons to defend itself against an alleged US atomic threat.

The memorandum, published by the official news agency, said the North had no choice but to prolong the possession of nuclear weapons "unless the United States makes a right choice".

"Our nuclear deterrent will be modernised and expanded far beyond US imagination," it said.

The North has been developing nuclear weapons for decades. Its official position has been that it needs them for self-defence against a US nuclear threat, but that it is willing in principle to scrap the atomic weaponry.

Under a September 2005 deal reached during six-nation negotiations, Pyongyang agreed to dismantle its nuclear programme in return for economic and diplomatic benefits and security guarantees.

But six-party talks on implementing the deal stalled in December 2008. The North has staged two nuclear tests -- in 2006 and 2009.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said Thursday that the North's nuclear programme is "a matter of serious concern".

North Korea's statements about uranium enrichment activities and the construction of a light-water reactor "continue to be deeply troubling", it said.

Pyongyang said it was building a uranium enrichment plant to produce low-enriched fuel for the new reactor to meet the nation's energy requirements.

THE SHOCK AND AWE OF FATHERHOOD

The first time I recall seeing journalists huddled en masse was on the doorstep of a nondescript terraced house in an inner city backstreet of my hometown Bristol, just down the road from the church I attended as a child.

Nobody was inside at the time. The house would remain empty for days. But the reporters and photographers maintained a vigil in the hope of a glimpse of Louise Brown, or ?Superbabe? as the international press had christened the world?s first test tube baby.

Thirty years on from that late-Seventies breakthrough, in a fertility clinic halfway around the world in Sydney, my wife, Fleur, and I hoped to benefit from the same scientific alchemy ? or invitro fertilisation, to give this technology its proper medical name.

When first we embarked on our IVF journey, I thought it could be traced back to my time on the road as a BBC foreign correspondent.

Male fertility is a sign of general wellbeing, and after years spent covering the 911 beat ? first in Washington and then in South Asia at the sharper end of America?s ?war on terror? ? I was horribly run-down.

A posting in Australia, which often had the feel of a lifestyle sabbatical, helped repair body and mind.?Still, however, we struggled to conceive.

At first we tried natural remedies: everything from Chinese herbs to acupuncture, naturopathy to kinesiology.

Surely all we needed was a minor corrective. Then, after a further year of trying, a doctor suggested an exploratory operation to find out if something more serious was amiss.

Even if it turned out to be a condition like endometriosis, which creates blockages in the fallopian tubes, we went into hospital that day believing the problem could be remedied without too much difficulty. It would be medically routine. Alas, the anesthetics from the operating theatre had not yet worn off when the surgeon called to tell us, in a cruelly matter-of-fact way, that it would be not just be hard to conceive naturally, but impossible.

As a journalist, one hopes never to become inured to awful news. The moment that happens it is time to relinquish the press pass. But covering disasters and conflicts, from the tsunami-wrecked shores of Sri Lanka and to the mine-scattered border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan, does build up something of a protective shell. When this call came through, however, those emotional defences were breached in an instant.

It felt as if we had suffered a bereavement.

Only a few years earlier, the ?kids conversation? had been such a joyful part of our relationship. How many children would we have? What would they be called? Would they inherit Australian traits from their mother or the British reserve of their father. A virtual family had already taken shape in our minds. That day, however, the mental screen went blank, as we contemplated for the first time that the virtual may never become real.

Now, in misery and self-pity, we found ourselves having the ?no kids? conversation ? or, just sitting in dazed silence.

LG Optimus L9 handson

Though LG didn't have any more to add to the L-Style series to offer the world? Behold the L9. Announced yesterday, the device made an appearance on the IFA show room floor this week, boasting a big and bright 4.7-inch IPS display that makes the its brethren looking downright shrimpy by comparison. In spite of the display size, the phone feels light, with a 8.9-millimeter profile.

It's important to note here that, in spite of being the king of the L-Series, it's still part of a budget lineup, and as such, the phone's body feels a bit plastickey, and the textured rear had a bit of trouble staying snapped in place in the two models (black and white) that we played with. Specwise, we're talking a 1GHz dual-core processor,1GB of RAM inside, 4GB of storage (expandable via a microSD slot and a 2,150mAh battery. The handset's rocking Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.4, to be precise).

The handset's got a fairly nice bezel, with the front-facing camera on the top and a home button on the bottom, flanked by illuminating back and menu touch buttons. A larger, 5MP camera is located on the rear of the device, above the flash. Vodafone has the handset priced at €50.90 subsidized and €340 unsubsidized. Peep a video of the handset, after the break.

Genmab, Johnson & Johnson agree $1.1 billion cancer deal

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Genmab has agreed a deal that could be worth over $1.1 billion with a unit of Johnson & Johnson for the rights to a cancer agent, giving the U.S. company a 10.7 percent equity stake in the Danish biotech group.

Genmab said on Thursday that J&J unit Janssen Biotech Inc would obtain global license rights to cancer agent daratumumab.

Janssen Biotech will make an upfront payment of $55 million for the license and Johnson & Johnson Development Corp would invest 475 million Danish crowns ($80 million) in new Genmab shares, the company said.

After the issue of the new shares, Johnson & Johnson will own 10.7 percent of Genmab's share capital, it said.

Genmab could also be entitled to up to $1 billion in development, regulatory and sales milestones and Janssen will be fully responsible for all costs associated with developing and commercializing daratumumab going forward, it said.

"Daratumumab is an exciting, innovative compound, and we are delighted to add it to our portfolio," said William N. Hait, head of Janssen Research & Development.

The deal led Genmab to raise its guidance for 2012 revenue to 435-460 million Danish crowns from 375-400 million, and cut its full-year operating loss forecast to 140-190 million from 200-250 million.

"This agreement significantly strengthens our financial position," said Genmab's Chief Executive Jan van de Winkel. ($1 = 5.9272 Danish crowns) (Reporting by Mette Fraende)

Screenplay Review - Duke Of Deception

Genre: Biopic
Premise: While growing up, a young boy gradually learns that his father, who's his hero, is the world's biggest deadbeat.
About: Adapted by A-List screenwriter Steve Zaillian (Schindler's List, Gangs of New York, Moneyball, Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) back in 2000, from the memoir, "Duke Of Deception: Memories Of My Father," by Geoffrey Wolff. ?The movie never got off the ground, probably for story issues I get into here in the review.
Writer: Steve Zaillian based on the novel by Geoffrey Wolff
Details: 133 pages

Zaillian (now THIS looks like a writer)

This has to be one of the stranger screenplays I've read in awhile. ?First off, there's no real story to speak of. ?It's just watching a kid grow up with this weirdo deadbeat of a dad. ?Despite that, either because Zaillian is such a good writer or because of the perverse need to see how bad this dad gets, I kept pushing through. ?And because I wanted to keep reading, I wondered if I should give this a "worth the read." ?But a lot of what we read here is so disturbing, and we hate this father so much, that we're kind of thrilled when it's over. ?Yeah, I wanted to know what happened. ?But thank the heavens above that I never have to revisit this story again (except through this review - darn it!).

So what's Duke of Deception about? ?Well, it's about a guy named Duke who's, um, deceitful. ?The bulk of the movie takes place in the 60s (I think - there was a hell of a lot of jumping around in time - if only 2000 Zallian had been able to read my Clarity article!), where, I guess, people just trusted each other more. ?You could walk into a big department store, open up a line of credit, buy $3000 worth of merchandise, then tell them you were going to pay later. ?And they'd allow it!

So Duke took advantage of this. ?Oh boy did he take advantage of it. ?See, here's the thing about Duke. He's never had a job. ?In fact, he's never accomplished anything in his life. ?He's created this whole pretend life where he went to Princeton and fought in the war, but it's all a lie, just like everything about him.

But anyway, Duke uses this "credit" ruse to buy anything he wants and NEVER pays. ?And I mean NEVER. ?He never pays a single bill in his life. ?If the bills start becoming too much, he moves to another store/vendor, or just moves the family out of town.

Oh yeah, the family. ?We're actually telling this story through Duke's son Geoffrey's eyes. ?Geoffrey, unfortunately, is brought up by this lying bastard, and, as a result, becomes his biggest victim. ?That's not to say Duke doesn't love his son. ?Actually, Duke loves Geoffrey more than anything in the world. ?But Duke makes Geoffrey think he's this amazing special person who can buy 50,000 dollar cars at the drop of a hat, when all he really is, is a giant deadbeat con man who's stolen money from every person he's ever met.

So while Duke spends his life running from the men he owes money to, he puts on a show for Geoffrey that they're all wrong and he's the one who's right. ?Therefore, while everyone else catches up with Duke's con, Geoffrey obliviously goes through life believing his dad is perfect.

Duke's constant need for things gets so bad, in fact, that after his first wife leaves him because of the tremendous amount of debt he's put them in, he marries a woman just to pillage her bank account, which will allow him to keep buying things. ?As Geoffrey grows up, he keeps seeing fights between his father and his wives, but always assumes its the wives' fault. ?His father is perfect. ?He could never do anything wrong.

It isn't until all his women leave him and Duke moves in with Geoffrey as an adult that Geoffrey finally gets a first-hand look at what his father's been doing. ?Duke starts taking money from his own son and not paying it back, simply because there's no one else to take money from. ?Duke even goes to jail for all the creditors he owes, allows Geoffrey to bail him out, then never shows up for court, forcing Geoffrey to eat thousands of dollars in bail fees.

It finally becomes clear to Geoffrey that his father is one giant fraud. ?A loser. ?A deadbeat of the highest order. ?The question is, what does he do about it? ?Does he keep enabling his addiction? ?Or does he finally grow up, accept his father for who he is, and leave him?

The real Geoffrey

Yeah, so like I said, this is one odd screenplay. ?I mean the first thing that comes to mind when finishing it is: How could anyone consider this a movie? ?Because it's not. ?It's just a man being a total fraud douchebag for two hours. ?I mean, it's fascinating in a way. ?To see how in denial he is. ?But there's no story here. ?There's no plot driving a story. ?There are no goals - no purpose. ?It's just, Duke fucks over one person after another.

That's the script's biggest fault - its repetition. ?It never really evolves into anything more than where it began. ?Okay, he gets things and doesn't pay for him. ?And then he gets more things and doesn't pay for them. And then gets MORE things and doesn't pay for them. ?At what point does it become, "Okay, that's enough things he gets that he didn't pay for??!"

Having said that, the script has a couple of strengths. ?Zaillian is a master at popping in the occasional great scene. ?There's a great sequence, for example, where Geoffrey falls in love with the trash man's daughter. ?So he goes to his father and asks, "Could you make sure you pay the trash man? ?Because I like his daughter." ?Duke assures him that he will, and yet a few days later, the trash man comes by and dumps every bit of trash from Duke's house back onto his lawn for not paying. ?The daughter stands there proudly, and tosses a gift that Geoffrey gave her onto the lawn as well, as if to put an exclamation point on how worthless she sees Geoffrey and his father to be.

The script also has a really intriguing final act, when Geoffrey comes face to face with his father's lie. ?When his dad starts taking advantage of his own son, Geoffrey's forced to take the blinders off, and it's not pretty what he sees. ?Because it's not just that his dad's taking advantage of him in this moment, it's that he now knows this is how his dad has always been. That there's never been a single authentic thing about him. ?Imagine that for a second. ?You've always looked up to someone as your hero. ?Then you learn that everything about them is a fraud. ?I had this same experience when I found out the truth about Milli Vanilli.

So in the end, I don't know what to make of this odd script. ?It almost feels like a backstory for a story to come later. ?I could say this is "worth the read," because there are parts of it that are entertaining in their own odd way, but I'd be betraying the need for...I don't know, class in a script, which the character of Duke makes sure there is none of.

I feel so dirty after this one. ?I think I need to take a shower.

[ ] what the hell did I just read?

What I learned: You need MOVIE MOMENTS in your script. ?Zallian is great at this! ?He makes sure there are 5 or 6 scenes in every script that are genuine bona fide moments that EXPLODE off the page. ?Besides the trash scene I mention above, there's also a scene, when Geoffrey is told to stay home for that day's game by his baseball coach, where Duke angrily speeds into the middle of the game, demands that the current batter take a hike, and insists that the coach put Geoffrey in RIGHT NOW! ?The whole game awkwardly stops as an unwitting Geoffrey is forced to bat. ?It's just a tense fun scene, and it reminded me that sometimes you have to step back from the macro and make sure your script has a group of memorable highly entertaining scenes as well.

Samsung ATIV Smart PC dock hands-on

And hey, what's a Windows 8 tablet without a docking station? Sure enough, Samsung was showing off a snazzy one tonight that turns your bright and beautiful ATIV Smart PC (which is a bit chunkier than its brother) into a notebook. The tablet slots into the top of the keyboard dock, with the Windows 8 button obscured slightly by the top of the dock. The device does look a fair amount like a netbook when it's firmly nestled inside. But we have to say, the quality of the dock doesn't match the beauty of the tablet itself, the plasticky bottom clashing with the brushed aluminum backing, particularly where the lip shows up slightly on the rear of the device.

When using the dock, you're likely going to spend most of your time in the classic UI -- and when you want to switch, you can just hit the button at the top of the dock to release the tablet from its docky prison. The buttons and trackpad feel a bit like a low-end netbook, and we had to do some fiddling to get that mouse across the desktop. We're hoping that Samsung will either release a slicker version or we'll be seeing something from a third-party manufacturer. In the meantime, the dock feels more like a second home for the tablet, best saved for those rare occasions when you'll need to do, say, some serious word processing.

Georges St-Pierre says he?s medically cleared to fight

The UFC welterweight champion is now cleared to compete. Georges St-Pierre shared the good news on his Facebook page.

Yesterday was the final chapter of my Road to Recovery- I'm now medically cleared to compete in professional mixed martial arts! Big thanks to all my fans for the amazing support during those 9 long months of rehab- couldn't have done it without you.

St-Pierre tore his ACL while preparing for a bout with Carlos Condit. While GSP rehabbed, Condit fought Nick Diaz for the interim welterweight belt. Condit won with a tight decision. Since he was not given a chance to defend the interim belt, it turned out to be just a really shiny, kind of heavy reminder of Condit's No. 1 contender status.

The two are slated to fight at UFC 154 in Montreal. GSP's last fight was on April 30, 2011, against Jake Shields. By the time he fights on Nov. 17, St-Pierre will have had 572 days off between fights.

Will the time off affect GSP or will he pick up where he left off? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Atheism on the rise around the globe

According to a new poll, religiosity worldwide is declining while more people say they are atheists. In the United States, a growing number consider themselves non-believers.

Atheism is on the rise in the United States and elsewhere while religiosity is declining, according to a new worldwide poll. ?The Global Index of Religiosity and Atheism,? conducted by WIN-Gallup International headquartered in Switzerland, found that the number of Americans who say they are ?religious? dropped from 73 percent in 2005 ? when the poll was last conducted ? to 60 percent. Those who said they were ?convinced? atheists rose from 1 to 5 percent. And 33 percent of the people polled said that they don?t consider themselves as a ?religious person."

Nonbelievers

Ryan Cragun, a University of Tampa sociologist of religion, told the ?Religion News Services? he questions whether the number of atheists in the United States really grew as the poll suggested. Dr. Cragun suggests that people may just be more comfortable identifying themselves as atheist.

That view seems consistent with a study conducted by the Pew Research Center?s Forum on Religion & Public Life in 2009 showing that 5 percent of Americans at that time said they did not believe in God or a universal spirit, but only 24 percent of the nonbelievers actually called themselves atheists.

The new poll is based on interviews (face-to-face, by telephone or online varying from country to country) with more than 50,000 people from 57 countries. The participants were asked this question: ?Irrespective of whether you attend a place of worship or not, would you say you are a religious person, not a religious person, or a convinced atheist??

America remains way down the list of countries for self-reported atheism. China tops that list with 47 percent ?convinced atheists,? followed by Japan (31 percent), the Czech Republic (30 percent), France (29 percent), and South Korea (15 percent).

Religious Ghana

According to the poll, the following are the top ten religious countries: Ghana (96 percent of the participants that they are religious), Nigeria (93 percent), Armenia (92 percent), Fiji (92 percent), Macedonia (90 percent), Romania (89 percent), Iraq (88 percent), Kenya (88 percent), Peru (86 percent), and Brazil (85 percent).

The least religious nations, according to the poll, are China (14 percent saying they are religious), Japan (16 percent), Czech Republic (20 percent), Turkey (23 percent), Sweden (29 percent), Vietnam (30 percent), Australia (37 percent), France (37 percent), Hong Kong (38 percent) and Austria (42 percent).

Most tea party Republicans have come to accept Mitt Romney as one of their own. But it's really Paul Ryan that they're enthusiastic about, and many of their champions are key speakers.

The tea party movement, which exploded on the political scene not long after Barack Obama?s inauguration as president and was a huge force in changing the face of the US Congress two years later, is a strong presence at the Republican convention.

Tea party values are reflected in the party platform, and tea party favorites are included among the major speakers ? including New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, slated to give the keynote address Tuesday night; Ted Cruz, favored to win the US Senate race in Texas; and Sen. Rand Paul, a founding member of the Tea Party Caucus in Congress. Others include US Sen. Marco Rubio, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

US Senate candidate and rancher Deb Fischer from Nebraska, a state senator who calls herself a ?citizen-legislator,? got her three minutes in the spotlight Tuesday when she was one of the early afternoon speakers, one of several lesser-known tea party favorites sprinkled throughout the three-day convention?s program.

Then there?s Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney?s vice presidential pick.

For the most part, tea partyers now support Mr. Romney, but many are even more enthusiastic about Mr. Ryan ? particularly for the budget plan he crafted in the US House of Representatives, which challenged some of the traditional thinking about government spending among his party?s leadership.

Tea Party Express Chairwoman Amy Kremer was asked this week whether she trusted Romney.

?Um, yeah,? she told CNN. ?I think it showed he understands the problems we?re facing when he picked Paul Ryan as his VP. That was very courageous. It was risky, it was courageous, and I actually think it was a brilliant move.?

Others in the movement are more wholehearted in their support of Romney, or at least they accepted the inevitable once the other tea party darlings ? Rick Perry, Herman Cain, and Michele Bachmann ? fell away, climbing onboard the Romney bandwagon in order to maintain their influence.

FreedomWorks president Matt Kibbe says, ?The Republicans have taken an important and significant step toward once again carrying the mantle of true fiscal conservatism.? He was speaking of the party platform approved here in Tampa, Fla., but its fiscal essence is much of the Ryan plan ? which has largely?become the Romney-Ryan plan. FreedomWorks is a conservative nonprofit that?s provided major funding for tea party activities.

GOP approves platform barring abortions, gay marriage

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Republicans emphatically approved a toughly worded party platform at their national convention Tuesday that would ban all abortions and gay marriages, reshape Medicare into a voucher-like program and cut taxes to energize the economy and create jobs.

The document opens by warning that while the American Dream has long been of equal opportunity for everyone, "Today that American Dream is at risk." It pledges that the GOP will "begin anew, with profound changes in the way government operates; the way it budgets, taxes and regulates."

Both parties routinely approve platforms at their conventions every four years, meant to encapsulate their principles and goals. Much of their details are customarily ignored when it comes to actually governing.

Even so, a poll by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found more people interested in the GOP platform than in the upcoming acceptance speeches by presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan. The survey found that 52 percent said they were interested in learning about the Republican platform, compared to 44 percent interested in Romney's speech and 46 percent interested in Ryan's.

"This ambitious blueprint projects a sea change in the way that government works," said Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, who led the party's platform committee. "It offers a solution for workers without jobs, families without savings and neighborhoods without hope."

Democrats lambasted the platform and immediately sought to tie it to Romney, who has differed from some of its details. For instance, he has said he would allow abortions in cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life is threatened.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is among several Democrats in Tampa trying to get their party's views heard, called the platform's stances on abortion and immigration "draconian" and "extreme" and blamed Romney. "What you have seen from him is that he does one thing, he says another," Villaraigosa said. "He has taken one position after another, time and again you know, and you can't have it both ways."

Here are key elements of the Republican platform:

JOB CREATION:

It states that the best jobs program is economic growth. "We do not offer yet another made-in-Washington package of subsidies and spending to create temporary or artificial jobs."

___

SMALL BUSINESS:

The GOP pledges to reform the tax code to make it easier for businesses to generate more capital and create more jobs.

___

TAXES:

"We reject the use of taxation to redistribute income, fund unnecessary or ineffective programs or foster the crony capitalism that corrupts both politicians and corporations."

It says a Republican administration would extend the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003, pending reform of the tax code. It says the party would strive to eliminate taxes on interest, dividends and capital gains altogether for lower- and middle-income taxpayers. It also would work to repeal the estate tax and the alternative minimum tax.

The party backs constitutional amendments to balance the federal budget and require a super majority for any tax increases.

___

MARRIAGE:

The platform affirms the rights of states and the federal government not to recognize same-sex marriage. It backs a constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

___

VOTER INTEGRITY:

"Voter fraud is a political poison," the platform says. It praises legislation to require photo identification for voting and to prevent election fraud.

___

GUN CONTROL:

The party says it opposes legislation intended to restrict Second Amendment rights by limiting the capacity of clips or magazines or otherwise restoring the assault weapons ban passed during the Clinton presidency.

___

ABORTION:

The party states that "the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed." It opposes using public revenues to promote or perform abortion or to fund organizations that perform or advocate abortions. It says the party will not fund or subsidize health care that includes abortion coverage.

___

ENERGY:

The party is committed to domestic energy independence and an "all-of-the-above" energy policy, backing the exploration and development of the Outer Continental Shelf and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. It criticizes the Obama administration for picking winners and losers in the energy sector and expresses support for new coal-fired plants that will be low-cost, environmentally responsible and efficient.

It adds: "We will end the EPA's war on coal and encourage the increased safe development in all regions of the nation's coal resources." It calls on Congress to prohibit the EPA from moving forward with new greenhouse gas regulations "that will harm the nation's economy and threaten millions of jobs over the next quarter century."

____

MEDICARE and MEDICAID:

The platform pledges to move both Medicare and Medicaid away from "the current unsustainable defined-benefit entitlement model to a fiscally sound defined-contribution model." It supports a Medicare transition to a premium-support model with an income-adjusted contribution toward a health plan of the enrollee's choice. Age eligibility in Medicare must be made more realistic in light of longer life spans.

Medicaid services for low income people would be transformed into a block grant program in which the states would be given the flexibility to determine the best programs for their residents.

____

IMMIGRATION:

The platform makes clear that "we oppose any form of amnesty for those who, by intentionally violating the law, disadvantage those who have obeyed it." It demands that the Justice Department halt lawsuits against Arizona, Alabama and other states that have enacted tough measures against illegal immigrants. It says federal funding should be denied to universities that provide in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants. It advocates making English the official national language.

____

HEALTH CARE:

It states that a Republican president on his first day in office would use his waiver authority to halt progress in carrying out the health care act pushed through by President Barack Obama and that Republican victories in November would guarantee that the act is never implemented. It proposes a Republican plan based on improving health care quality and lowering costs and a system that promotes the free market and gives consumers more choice.

____

EDUCATION:

Republicans support consumer choice, including home schooling, local innovations such as single-sex classes, full-day school hours and year-round schools. It says Republicans renew their call for replacing family planning programs for teens "with abstinence education which teaches abstinence until marriage as the responsible and respected standard of behavior."

____

DEFENSE:

The platform says Republicans are "the party of peace through strength" and support the concept of American exceptionalism ? "the conviction that our country holds a unique place and role in human history." It criticizes the current administration for its weak positions toward such countries as North Korea, China and Iran and its reductions in military spending. The Republican national military strategy "restores as a principal objective the deterrence using the full spectrum of our military capabilities."

To cap or not to cap: Scientists find new RNA phenomenon that challenges dogma

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Some RNA molecules spend time in a restful state akin to hibernation rather than automatically carrying out their established job of delivering protein-building instructions in cells, new research suggests.

And instead of being a fluke or a mistake, the research suggests that this restful period appears to be a programmed step for RNA produced by certain types of genes, including some that control cell division and decide where proteins will work in a cell to sustain the cell's life.

This could mean that protein production in cells is not as clear-cut as biology textbooks suggest, scientists say.

"This could mean there are more variations to the proteins in our bodies than we realize; it means that RNAs can be stored and reactivated and we don't know what biological process that affects -- it could influence embryonic development, or neurological activity, or even cancer," said Daniel Schoenberg, professor of molecular and cellular biochemistry at Ohio State University and lead author of the study.

Schoenberg and colleagues discovered this phenomenon by tracing the origins of a cap-like structure on messenger RNA (mRNA) that is known to coordinate most of this RNA molecule's short life. Messenger RNA is manufactured in a cell's nucleus and each mRNA contains the instructions needed to produce a specific protein that a cell needs to live.

Until now, scientists have believed that once an mRNA is no longer needed to make protein, the cap comes off and the molecule is degraded, its job complete. But Schoenberg's lab discovered in 2009 that some mRNAs that were thought to be degraded were instead still present in the cell, but they were missing part of their sequence and had caps placed back on the newly formed ends. Because these mRNAs were in the cytoplasm, the changes had to happen there rather than inside the nucleus.

In this new study, the researchers were looking for further evidence of these apparent rogue mRNAs, but instead they found that a completely unexpected biological process occurs before some proteins are even a glimmer in a gene's eye: The uncapping and recapping of mRNAs outside the nucleus results from a cap recycling operation in the cell cytoplasm. This process appeared to enable certain RNAs to pause, without being degraded, before launching protein production.

"What this discovery tells us is a complete fundamental reworking of the relationship between a gene, messenger RNA and a protein. It's more complicated than we realize," Schoenberg said.

The research is published online in the open-access journal Cell Reports.

That fragments of mRNA could exist at all in the cell's main body was first reported by other scientists in 1992. Years later, Schoenberg asked a postdoctoral researcher in his lab to revisit these unexpected RNA fragments and confirm they exist. The postdoc's experiments showed that these mRNA, thought to be the dregs left over from their degradation, had caps on them -- suggesting they still had the potential to function in protein production. Schoenberg, also director of Ohio State's Center for RNA Biology, has been investigating this cytoplasmic capping operation ever since.

In 2009, he and colleagues reported the discovery of two enzymes in the cell's main body that would enable mRNA capping to occur completely outside the nucleus and in the cytoplasm instead.

In the current studies, Schoenberg sought to determine the physiological significance of this capping operation. The researchers engineered a way to block cytoplasmic capping in cells in the lab and then looked at changes in more than 55,000 RNAs.

This interference with cytoplasmic capping revealed that two different types of pathways could exist in the cells -- some mRNAs remained stable without their caps, while others without caps were rapidly destroyed. This finding indicated that mRNAs can lose their caps in the cytoplasm and at some point get recapped. With further experimentation, the researchers determined that only some mRNAs lost their caps in the cell body.

"It's not all of any particular message that's uncapped, just a portion of a message," Schoenberg said. "We wanted to show that we have uncapped RNAs in the cell and they are not degraded. It means they're stored that way."

This finding offered hints that there is a higher order to this phenomenon, and that some mRNAs purposefully rest in an uncapped state without being degraded by enzymes within the cell whose job is to remove them. It also suggested that as the capping circumstances change inside the cell body, signals from genes might undergo change that allows for two or more proteins, one being shorter than the other, to be made from the same mRNA.

"We have always thought that one gene would give an mRNA for one kind of protein. But what we have found makes us wonder if multiple proteins could be made from each of the messenger RNAs that undergo decapping and recapping in the cytoplasm," Schoenberg said.

The researchers used bioinformatics technology to determine which genes were manufacturing mRNAs that could exist in this uncapped and recapped state in the cytoplasm. These genes included those that control some of the most basic elements of cell survival: They determine the location of proteins and RNAs within the cell and, perhaps most significantly, the mitotic cell cycle -- part of the process of cell division.

"It wasn't random. It was very specific," Schoenberg said. "There are specific families of mRNAs that are regulated in this way, and that has ramifications for how proteins are expressed and regulated."

As an example, he cited how neurons communicate messages across vast distances to other nerve cells. It is known that mRNAs are deliberately kept in a silent state while they travel from, for example, the spinal cord to the fingertip, where they are then activated to make new proteins.

"What would the condition be of the mRNA to keep it silent? The possibility is it doesn't have a cap on it, and if it doesn't, it can't be translated. Maybe cytoplasmic capping in neurons is a function that allows that message to be translated at just the right time," Schoenberg said.

Or, in the case of cancer: "What if one of the things that happens is you are making shortened proteins instead of full-length proteins and the regulatory part of the protein is missing in the shortened protein? If that's true, can you interfere with this process and interfere with malignancy as a result?"

For now, these scientists can only speculate about what this unexpected biological process really means. Schoenberg's lab plans to investigate the phenomenon more thoroughly in a line of breast cancer cells.

6 Money-Saving Tips for Small Business | Small Business Bonfire

You don?t have to go off the deep end and turn into Ebenezer Scrooge just to save money in the day-to-day operations of your small business.? We?ve got tips that will help you save by cutting back on unnecessary expenses within your company. No need for drastic measures like forcing your employees to work by candlelight with a single lump of coal.

1. Never buy on a whim.

Sometimes it?s easy to get distracted by how convenient the latest tools and electronics can be. What you really need to focus on is the bottom line. Will making the purchase be a sound financial decision for your small business? If not, walk away. Make it a habit to contemplate major non-emergency purchases a minimum of one week before you buy.

2. Practice your negotiating skills.

So many times you can get better prices from suppliers if you just ask. It?s worth it to read up a little on the art of negotiating and understand the psychology behind it, too. Not everything is negotiable, of course. But it?s pretty easy to recognize when there?s an opportunity to save.

3. Shop used or buy older models.

It might seem tough at first, but you really can operate a business without being an early adopter. Whether buying a company car or a computer, you can get everything you truly need for a better price if you avoid the temptation to buy the latest and greatest model just because it?s there.

4. Track office supply spending.

You don?t have to be a tedious penny pincher to make this work. Just look over your supply receipts and learn to recognize where you have opportunities to save. For example, if you see you?re spending a fortune on sticky notes each month, consider investing in dry-erase boards or other reusable products for taking notes and messages.

5. Cut back on utility consumption when the business is closed.

Just like at home, you should be automatically adjusting the thermostat when your building is empty to save money. And remember that little things add up. From installing a motion light in restrooms to buying office space with plenty of natural light, you can reduce how much you pay on utilities every month.

6. Spend less on postage.

Many of us already take advantage of email and electronic newsletters to communicate with customers. But sometimes it?s necessary to send important information via snail mail. Take advantage of bulk delivery services whenever possible. You should also plan ahead to reduce the need to use overnight delivery services. One-day delivery can cost your business a small fortune in just a few months time.

In most cases, saving money is about taking the time to track and evaluate your expenditures. Put aside a little time every month to look for places where you can save. You can also ask your staff members for suggestions to help make business more efficient and less costly.

Have you recently implemented money-saving measures in your small business? How did you do it?

Keep an eye on the long-term numbers | Business of Software

This is a guest post from Joca Torres. Joca is the director of product development and product management at Locaweb, Brazil?s leader in web hosting, cloud servers and SaaS applications like email marketing and online stores, serving more than 250,000 customers. His first startup experience was in the early 1990s when he founded and ran one of the first Brazilian ISPs. He has been working with internet related software ever since.

Joca is also the author of The Startup Guide: how startups and established companies can create and manage profitable web products. The book is in Portuguese, but Joca has been kind enough to translate a few sections of it for us. Joca also posted all of the book?s content on the ?Guia da Startup? blog (in Portuguese).

?????????????????????????????????????????????

The conversion funnel explained in my previous post consists of a short term data set since within a few days or even hours, you can already see trends, draw conclusions, create hypotheses and validate these hypotheses, whether talking to your users, whether experimenting and measuring the results.

In addition to these short-term data, there are other data that take longer to stabilize and to show trends. The fact that they take longer to show trends doesn?t mean that you should not monitor them during the first months of your web product. These are the long-term numbers, which can be classified as global numbers (revenue and costs) and individual numbers (CAC, LT and LTV).

Global numbers: revenue and costs

Revenue is the money that you get when people use your product. There are some ways to obtain revenue from your web product:

  • Revenue paid by the user: used by web products such as Google AdWords, MailChimp, Zendesk, Salesforce.com and others. In this case the revenue comes from periodic payment. Another quite common payment option is pay per use. Revenue paid by the user is more usual in B2B products. According to a tweet by Brian Walter, VP & Principal Analyst at Forrester for eCom & multichannel tech, only 7% of software revenue in the US comes from sales to consumers, 93% is from sales to businesses and the government. Some examples of web product with revenue paid by the final consumer are LinkedIn and ContaCal.
  • Revenue paid by someone interested in your users: in this case someone who is interested in talking to your user pays you to do that. This model is widely used for web products used by consumers. Usually the business model is to sell advertising. One example is Google that allows anyone to use the search and charges companies to advertise in the search results. Another similar example is Facebook, which also offers free access to users and charges companies interested in doing advertising to Facebook users. Another source of revenue is selling usage reports to companies interested in knowing the behavior of your users. Note that in order to be interesting for someone to the point that this someone is willing to pay to access your user, you must have a very large amount of users who return often to use your product.
  • Indirect Revenue:this is the revenue you get as a result of using the software, but that is not paid to use the software. There are basically two types of indirect revenue:
    • Revenue from sale or rental of physical or virtual items: this is the case of online stores that use the web to sell or rent physical items. Amazon and Netflix are good examples. There are also stores that sell or rent virtual items such as Netflix streaming service or Amazon?s Kindle books. Note that e-commerce sites that are brokering the sale of physical items such as eBay are not of this kind. They are the type in which the revenue is paid by the user of the web product in a pay per use mode, since in this scenario the seller pays the broker site a commission on the sale.
    • Cost Reduction: the case of internet banking, high school or college intranet, portal to access to results of clinical exams and other systems that do not sell anything or charge for access. In this type of product there is no revenue, but cost reduction. The internet banking reduces the cost of physical customer care. Intranet high school or college allows a faster flow of communication between school and student or student?s parents, saving on visits and meetings. Access to clinical exams results via the internet reduces costs of other forms of delivery of the test results, such as printing and mailing.

This revenue will be used to pay your costs. Once you are able to pay your monthly costs, the surplus will be used to offset the investment made during those months when the monthly income did not cover the monthly costs. Both revenues and costs should be checked every month. It?s a good idea to classify your costs in some categories to help you understand where you?re spending more and where you can save. I usually classify costs into four categories:

  • Infrastructure: all costs necessary to keep the service running. In this category I include the cost of website hosting and application, domain registration, email marketing tools, SEO tools, A/B testing tools, online chat and so on. Usually the expenses are recurring and thus require much attention whenever you hire a new service in this category.
  • development: here are all the costs to develop and implement new features on the website and the product, including programming, interface development, visual design and logo design. If you?re a developer, chances are you can save here.
  • marketing: every investment that you do to attract customers, such as AdWords, Facebook ads, ads on websites, magazines, newspapers and TV. We must also include costs with printing and distribution of flyers, coupons, and brochures. At first you probably need investment here, but it is important to invest time in free ways to attract customers such as SEO, content generation and social recommendation.
  • domain expertise: is the investment that you make to create and improve your product on its topic. For example, if you?re working on a web accounting product, it is important to have knowledge on this topic. If it?s a system for doctors, you have to know a bit of this world. In the case of ContaCal, I needed help from people who understand food and nutrition.

Obviously, to have a profitable product you need to have monthly revenue greater than the monthly costs. In ContaCal I?m still chasing that, but I?m getting closer to monthly profitability:

Here?s the translated column names in the same order they appear above:

  • Costs
  • marketing costs
  • infrastructure costs
  • development costs
  • domain expertise costs
  • Revenue
  • Result

Individual numbers: CAC, LT and LTV

The revenue and cost are indicators of the overall health of your web product. However, it is important to have individual indicators, i.e., indicators by each customer. There are three individual indicators that are important:

  • CAC: is the Customer Acquisition Cost. It is the sum of the costs associated with finding and getting the attention of potential customers, bringing them to your site, converting them to users of your product and later to a paid customers.
  • LT: the lifetime of your customer, i.e., how long on average your customer stays your customer. This number only makes sense when you have a recurring revenue business model.
  • LTV: is the lifetime value, the value of a customer for as long as she remains your customer. It?s the revenue generated by your customer during her LT.

From the above definitions it is easy to see that your product will be profitable when you have high LT and LTV and low CAC. What you need is an LTV greater than CAC. Something I?m working hard to get in ContaCal:

Here?s the translated column names in the same order they appear above:

  • New trials
  • New paying customers
  • Remaining paying customers
  • LT
  • LTV
  • Trial CAC
  • Paying customer CAC

What you can see above is that LT is increasing, i.e., the oldest the customer, the greater is her LT. At the beginning of operations data change a lot, after a month in the life of your product LT can only be a maximum of one month or slightly more if you charge 3, 6 or 12 months in advance. However, it is important to monitor these indicators since the beginning of its operation. ContaCal has only six full months of operation as a fee based system. These data tend to stabilize at around 2 years of operation.
