A Schuyler woman will spend more than two years behind bars and pay more than $100,000 in restitution after being convicted in Charlottesville Circuit Court of selling false insurance policies.
Mae Anne Fattaleh, 40, was the owner and operator of M.A.S. Insurance Services Inc. and M.A.S. Insurance Agency, both of which had offices in the Charlottesville area, according to a news release from the Virginia State Police.
The state police were notified that Fattaleh was selling nonexistent insurance policies by the Bureau of Insurance in February 2009. She was arrested in August 2009 and charged with obtaining money by false pretense, a felony.
The release says that in January 2011, while out on bond, Fattaleh was arrested again on other insurance fraud-related charges, including attempting to obtain money by false pretenses and writing bad checks. Fattaleh was also charged with credit card theft in Nelson County, according to the release.
Fattaleh pleaded guilty to four counts of obtaining money by false pretense stemming from her 2009 arrest in the city?s Circuit Court in April. The charges brought against her in 2011 were dismissed.
She was sentenced last month to a total of 23 years in prison for the crimes, with all but 25 months of that time suspended. In addition, she will pay a total of $114,009.45 to the victims as restitution. Fattaleh is also responsible for paying over $2,000 in court costs, and will be on probation for the rest of her life.?
