Child-friendly DIY home improvement projects | Freedom Mortgage ...

Need a reason to get your kids outside this summer? There are a number of do-it-yourself projects that are fun for the whole family. Not only do these tasks make great family time, they can also go a long way in improving your home?s curb appeal.

Build stepping-stones

Creating stepping-stones is a great way to get your children on their feet and practicing their artistic ability. Once completed, you can place these stones in a number of different locations around your property.

Start by purchasing a 40 lb. bag of ready-mix concrete or mortar. This will create three to five stones, depending on how big you make them. Dig out some old aluminum pans to use as molds, follow directions and pour away.

Once the substance firms up a bit, this is where your children get a chance to shine. Allow them to add items such as polished pebbles, beads, marbles or broken tiles to really personalize the stones. After 48 hours, the stepping-stones should be ready for use around your property, giving it a personal touch.

Decorate your mailbox

The sight of plain uninteresting mailboxes lining the road in some neighborhoods is very common. Break the norm with your children this summer and let them add a personal touch to your mailbox to make the mail carrier?s day.

Start by un-mounting the box from the post and giving it a good scrub to remove any chipped paint, rust and other residue. Once it?s dry, paint a coat of metal primer to give your kids a blank canvas to unleash their inner Picasso.

A few acrylic paints from any craft store should do the trick, but make sure to include the house number once the kids are done.

Install solar walkway lighting

This project may be more appropriate for older children, but it?s still a very simple and safe project. Since solar walkway lights don?t require a main power source, you won?t need to do any major electrical work. All you need to do is make sure they?re securely in the ground.

Consult with your children to determine the best locations for the lights. These spots can range from lining the sidewalk to the edge of your garden. In addition, once the sun dips below the horizon and these wireless devices come to life, the technology could spark your children?s curiosity.

Remember, if you ever want to do some more serious home improvement projects, but don?t think you have the funding, you may be able to use an FHA refinance to free up the cash needed.

Improving your home value is a great way to get the most out of your investment if you ever decide to put your property on the market. Refinancing your home loan with Freedom Mortgage is just one way to free up some extra cash to make those much-needed changes to your home.
