YORK, Maine ? Oktoberfest kicks off this weekend with Artfest and Antiquefest, events promoting local artisans and antique shops.

Both are held by the Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce, and Antiquefest leads up to Harvestfest on the weekend of Oct. 13.

Artists within shops and private studios open their doors for Artfest on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29-30. This is the third year the chamber has held Artfest, said Program Manager Stephanie Oeser.

Artfest is not limited to chamber members, she said.

"We want to promote as many artisans and antique shops as we can," she said.

Participants include Beyond the Sea in downtown York Village; Maine Freelance Art at Knight's Quilt Shop on Route 1; Ocean Fire Pottery on Woodbridge Road; Stonecrop Gallery on Shore Road; the Union Congregational Church on Church Street in York Beach, where several knitters, weavers, rug hookers and quilters will show and sell their products; and the York Art Association on Route 1A in York Harbor. Other studios are expected to join Artfest. For a full list of participants, a trail map and hours, visit www.gatewaytomaine.org/artfest/participants.

This is the second year the chamber has held Antiquefest, a week-long event running from Saturday, Sept. 29, through Sunday, Oct. 7. More than a dozen antique dealers along the southern Maine coast are participating. While the antique shops, unlike some art studios, are open to the public on a daily basis, many of the dealers have special events and offers during Antiquefest, according to Oeser.

The shops are on Route 1 in York unless otherwise noted. Participants include Bell Farm Antiques, Blanche's Antiques, Bomar Hall Antiques & Collectibles on Route 1 in Wells, Columbary House Antiques, Family Tree Antiques, The Gray's Antiques on Route 1 in Wells, The Little Red Hen on Woodbridge Road in York, R. Jorgensen Antiques on Post Road in Wells, and Withington and Company Antiques.
