Kleiner Perkins And Sequoia Fund $6.5M Round For Cross-Device Ad Targeter Drawbridge

drawbridge logoWhen two of the biggest names in venture capital (arguably still the biggest) both invest in a startup, you know it's probably time to take notice. So yes, take notice: A cross-device ad targeting startup called Drawbridge has raised a $6.5 million Series A from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Sequoia Capital. The company was founded in November 2010 by Kamakshi Sivaramakrishnan, a scientist at AdMob and then, after the acquisition, at Google. Sivaramakrishnan says she started the company because she saw the proliferation of ad targeting technology on the desktop web, while there was "no significant technology innovation" on the mobile side. So she decided to tackle the problem herself, "outside of the big G."

Kris Jenner Slams, Promotes Tabloid Label of "Monster Mom"

Kris Jenner is simply incensed that a new tabloid cover screams that the Kardashian sisters are all DITCHING THEIR MONSTER MOM. Just how enraged is the family matriarch over this claim?

She's posted a photo of the cover in question on her personal website. That won't drive sales or mask the obvious relationship Kris has with In Touch Weekly or anything!

Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kover

The story alleges that Jenner threw a party in NYC late last month in order to celebrate the clan's $40 million deal with E!, but Khloe left early, Kim skipped the event and Kris "started a fight with [Kourtney] about how she was raising her son... Kourtney was telling her to mind her own business. She said Khloé was right about how controlling Kris is.”

Blah, blah, blah. The details aren't exactly vital, considering they were conjured up by both the magazine and the Kardashians. But in case you need to be reminded about how tight-knit mother and daughters are:

"I never threw a party anywhere on April 22nd," Jenner blogged today. "I have an amazing relationship and I feel like the luckiest mom in the world to spend such quality time with all my kids and my grandson! We are truly blessed!!!"

No they aren't. Not by any God we choose to believe in.

Ping Monitor Professional 4.7.2

EMCO Ping Monitor ($49) checks the availability of systems on a network by sending pings at regular intervals and analyzing the responses from each machine. Administrators monitoring multiple servers and concerned about uptime often write shell scripts to keep track of these statistics. Ping Monitor performs the same task in an easy-to-use graphical interface but doesn?t really offer any advanced features or capabilities.

IT administrators use the application in an ?autopilot? mode to supervise network connections to critical equipment. The scheduling feature allows administrators to schedule times when certain machines don?t need to be monitored, such as during scheduled maintenance windows or when they are powered off on weekends, without having to stop the monitoring process for other machines.

While the software needs to be installed on a Windows machine (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7, Vista, XP, and Server), Ping Monitor can monitor any machine regardless of the operating system, provided it can respond to ping (ICMP echo) requests. Ping Monitor is available in a free version as well as a Professional version. The free version is limited to tracking up to five machines while the Professional version is unlimited. A 30-day evaluation of Ping Monitor Professional is available online.

Using Ping Monitor
A Windows host monitoring tool, Ping Monitor tracks connections to multiple network hosts by simultaneously sending pings (ICMP echo requests) to all the machines in its "to watch" list. It detects changes in machine status and analyzes responses to calculate connection statistics, such as high, low, and average response times, response time deviation, uptime, and other values to evaluate connection quality and stability. The monitoring interface displays all scanned IP addresses with the associated information in a long list.

If a host doesn't respond to multiple requests, Ping Monitor flags the machine and sends out notifications about the outage. The message can be sent by email, displayed in the Windows system tray, or an audio alert. The non-responding machine is also highlighted in red in the interface.

The main interface feels a little crammed, as it displays the IP addresses being monitored, Application Log, details about the host, and actions to take when a machine doesn't respond, all in one single view. It's possible to turn off the log and host details pane, or rearrange them. Double-clicking on an IP address opens up an edit window to modify notification and monitoring rules.

Ping Monitor allows users to enter individual IP addresses, hostnames, or IP ranges that need to be monitored. Network administrators can then customize the notification messages on a per-host or per-event basis. For example, administrators can configure Ping Monitor to change who would be alerted by email depending on which host encountered the issue. Or send an email message first, and then follow up with an SMS notification if the computer remains offline.

The monitoring results can also be formatted to use outside the tool. The tool supports XML and CSV formats.

Setting Up Ping Monitor
To get started, all I had to do was enter the IP addresses of the servers and desktops running on my test network in to the tool. Ping Monitor supports a list of IP addresses, an IP range, or even hostnames. Once I entered the list of machines, I hit the Start button on the application?s toolbar. Ping Monitor pinged systems at regularly spaced intervals and displayed basic statistics, such as how long the tool had been monitoring that address, the machine?s uptime, and the average response time. If the server is not available, the tool displays that address in red.

I turned on a few machines while the tool was already running. Before I turned them on, I noticed the corresponding IP addresses were highlighted in red within the interface. As soon as the machine was online, the screen reflected the change automatically by removing the red highlight.

I could tweak most of the settings, such as configuring the ping itself, including its timeout period, packet size, and time to live (TTL) value. I could create a schedule to specify which days of the week (and time of day) the machines should be pinged. I could also design a customized list defining what the machine should do when it didn't respond to a ping request, who to contact in case of an outage, and how to send out the notifications. In the Professional version, every single one of these settings can be customized for each host.

Monitoring host connectivity can be handled easily with a shell script. Ping Monitor doesn't have any advanced features to differentiate it from a script. If the network is complicated or has machines that are regularly offline for maintenance reasons, network administrators would find the ability to automate when the machines are being monitored and for how long a true time-saver.

Ping Monitor Under the Hood
Network administrators can customize the scripts that take into account scheduled maintenance windows and rules for each host and automate the entire process. For managers monitoring multiple machines, Ping Monitor is handy for monitoring what machines are online and notifying appropriate users when something goes wrong. For environments where machines don't need to be monitored on different schedules and simpler networks, Ping Monitor seems a little redundant since a shell script and a cron job would accomplish the task just as well.

Clemens lawyer challenges ex-drug dealer

(AP) ? A lawyer for Roger Clemens highlighted inconsistencies between a government witness' testimony and the man's book Wednesday and accused him of lying about a shipping label addressed to Clemens' house.

At issue was an old, torn label that witness Kirk Radomski testified was for a shipment of human growth hormone to Clemens' home. Radomski testified he found the label under his bedroom TV in June 2008, although federal agents had failed to find it when they searched his home three years earlier.

Clemens' lawyer, Michael Attanasio, read a section from Radomski's book "Bases Loaded," about selling steroids to pro baseball players, in which the former drug dealer wrote, "I'd obviously hidden it there when I began to worry that the government was going to come after me and had then forgotten about it."

Asked about that Wednesday, Radomski insisted, "I didn't hide nothing."

Then what he wrote in the book was a lie, Attanasio countered.

"Did you ever write a book? Write a book!" Radomski retorted and held his book up. "See how they turn things."

The label was addressed to Brian McNamee, Clemens' former strength coach, at Clemens' home address in Texas. Radomski said the shipment was for two kits of HGH ? "about 50-100 needles" ? and estimated it took place in 2002.

McNamee, who will testify later in the trial, has said he injected Clemens with HGH and steroids.

Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, is accused of lying to Congress when he denied using steroids and HGH. If prosecutors are able to convict him, it will be with the help of Radomski, a former ice cream truck driver who was a lowly batboy with the New York Mets when Clemens was in the prime of his career.

Also in his book, Radomski incorrectly wrote that the label he found said, "Brian McNamee, c/o Roger Clemens." The label didn't mention Clemens.

"That was a lie," Attanasio said.

Radomski responded that it wasn't a lie, because it he might have written Clemens' name on the box underneath the label. When Attanasio suggested that part of the book was inaccurate, Radomski agreed: "That's not correct in the book."

Radomski, who provided performance-enhancing drugs to dozens of major league baseball players, had injected some much needed energy into a plodding prosecution case when he first took the stand Tuesday.

He got the jurors' attention by standing, opening his suit coat and demonstrating on his broad-shouldered body how HGH and steroids are delivered. Even sitting, he leaned in, made eye contact and generally held court with the jurors in ways other witnesses have not.

Radomski talked so quickly in his New York accent that he had to be slowed down several times, both by the prosecutor and the court reporter. And he played up his street smarts over book smarts.

"You're asking the wrong person to spell," he quipped when asked to spell one of the many steroids he mentioned. When he botched the pronunciation of another word, he said: "Hey, I'm from the Bronx. I'm not a scholar." He boldly suggested that U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton get an "orthopedic chair" to deal with recurring back problems. He knocked on the witness stand three times to describe the "knock at the door" when feds arrived to search his house in 2005.

Displaying New York chutzpah, Radomski testified that he had taken steroids and HGH for 15 years, and then proudly declared, "I don't drink, and I don't do any drugs."

"I'm a health nut," he added. "I take care of my body."

Radomski cooperated with investigators and pleaded guilty to money laundering and distribution of a controlled substance in 2007. He was sentenced to five years' probation and fined $18,000. He said he's started his own supplement company, including "a fat burner and a natural testosterone builder."

The pace of the trial quickened Tuesday afternoon, just hours after the judge had scolded both sides for dragging out the trial and told them they were making it too "boring" for jurors, who were getting "fed up."

Radomski described how he started taking steroids himself as a teenager around 1990 because he wanted to bulk up his small frame. He then became a seller, first of steroids and then HGH, and met McNamee through a ballplayer they both knew.

Radomski said baseball players, and especially pitchers, didn't want to build muscle from steroids, but instead wanted to build endurance. That could help neutralize one of the defense's main arguments, that Clemens' body didn't change that much from the beginning to the end of his 24-season career.

Meanwhile, in a written response filed Wednesday morning, prosecutors opposed Clemens' attempt to strike the testimony of former teammate Andy Pettitte. Last week, Pettitte testified that Clemens told him he had tried human growth hormone, only to say under cross-examination that he might have misunderstood Clemens. A defense motion on Monday had argued that Pettitte's testimony had "all the weight of a coin flip" and asked that the jury be instructed not to consider the conversation between the two pitchers. The government responded that the jury must be allowed ? "if it desires" ? to credit Pettitte's initial testimony and "discount any cross-examination inconsistencies."

Also Wednesday, Judge Walton dismissed a juror because he had been sleeping and showing up late for trial. During jury selection, the juror, an unemployed man in his 20s, said he'd rather be sleeping than be in court but promised to be "wide awake" if selected. The jury has four alternates.

Topics from ultrafast data transfer to climate engineering to novel materials / All programs interdisciplinary

This press release is available in German.

What is the role of phosphorus resources for trees and forests and what do they mean for the nutrition and balance of a forest ecosystem? How can ultrafast wireless transmission paths help deliver today's growing data streams even in mobile internet access? How do the modern arts experience, perceive and process temporality and what does this view imply for the interpretation of artistic creations in general? These are just some of the foundational questions to be examined in the coming years by ten new Priority Programmes of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation).

A total of ten new Priority Programmes were established by the DFG Senate at its recent spring session in Bonn. These programmes are set to launch at the beginning of 2013 and leverage the combined scientific expertise of researchers from Germany and beyond who work in particularly current or emerging fields.

The new Priority Programmes cover the entire spectrum of disciplines, from the humanities to the life and natural sciences to engineering. Topics range from the development and testing of a novel class of materials such as topological insulators, which are electrically insulating in their interior but conductive on the surface to innovative paths in forming technology to enable health- and environment-friendly production without lubricants. Another programme deals with the dynamic simulation of complex solids processes, a key technology that could also be used for applications in chemistry, pharmacy and medicine.

The newly established programmes are highly interdisciplinary. For example, researchers from the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences will work closely together on issues such as global climate change and climate engineering, investigating the evidence for environmental and ethical risks and opportunities, as well as looking at the social, political and legal challenges involved. New approaches will also be taken by a programme designed to analyse, with high-resolution measuring methods, the function and dynamics of neural networks using a "troika strategy": each joint research problem will be tackled by experimenters, methods developers and analysis experts in the field of computational neuroscience. All Priority Programmes share a strong focus on early career support, which is a key requirement for their establishment.

The ten Priority Programmes were selected from a total of 40 concepts submitted. Over the coming months, the DFG will announce a separate call for proposals for each programme. Proposals will be evaluated in a rigorous review process to determine their scientific quality and their contribution to the general topic in question. A total of almost 60 million euros will be available for all ten new programmes in the first funding period.

DFG Priority Programmes generally run for six years. Including the ten newly approved ones, the DFG now supports 90 Priority Programmes.

The new Priority Programmes (by scientific discipline) and their coordinators:
