Serbs set to vote in Kosovo local poll on Nov.3

PRISTINA, Kosovo (AP) ? Kosovo's president has called for a vote on mayors and local assemblies to be held on Nov. 3, in a poll that is expected to see widespread participation by the minority Serbs.

The decision Tuesday by Atifete Jahjaga comes after talks with the country's main political forces and follows an agreement mediated by the European Union between Kosovo and Serbia to normalize relations.

As part of the deal, Serbia will call off security forces operating in the Serb-run north in exchange for more self-rule.

The 2009 local elections were largely boycotted by Serbs, which account for around 10 percent of Kosovo's 2 million people. The remainder of the population is largely ethnic Albanians.

Serbia rejects Kosovo's declaration of independence in 2008.
