Six Helpful Tips for Dealing with Eczema | The Mom with Moxie

I?ve had eczema for as long as I can remember. As I?ve gotten older, it?s gotten better. But, during the winter months, living with it can sometimes be uncomfortable at best. Here are five tips that I find helpful, in dealing with eczema:

  1. Avoid over-bathing. I love to take long, hot showers. Unfortunately, during the winter months, I can?t.
  2. Bathe in warm (not hot) water. Hot water can dry out the skin, so those short showers I take luke warm.
  3. Use a ?non-soap.? I use Dove, because it doesn?t dry out my skin like soap does.
  4. Apply moisturizer frequently. I carry lotion with me at all times. Anytime I?m feeling dry, I break it out and lotion up.
  5. Avoid scented soaps, detergents, etc. I use any ?free and clear? detergent. My skin seems to like it better
  6. Stay away from wool clothing. Or, at least wear some sort of undergarment to shield you skin from direct contact.

I hope this helps any of you out there dealing with this very annoying and uncomfortable skin condition. If you have any additional tips, please let me know!

Disclaimer: I am not a medical doctor. I?m just a mom who has eczema, trying to deal.

Destination Motherhood - Home School Coach

My youngest daughter is pregnant and in fact is due in three weeks. She is facing ?Destination Motherhood!??She also just moved to Seattle . Yes, it is a bummer but on the brighter side I get to take two weeks off to visit her.

While she has been pregnant she has complained that other mom?s just want to share their terrible birth stories with her. She is right. Sometimes it?s as if we all have some kind of contest going on to see who?had?the hardest time. Then there are those few sunny women who ?had such a glorious?experience?the rest of us want to throttle them. : )

Really, it can be so difficult when you are becoming a new mom. Recently my daughter decided to?have?a ?Count Down To Motherhood? on her blog. She asked many women that she knows to share?their?mothering?experiences,?both?good?and bad.

Here is why she made the decision even though she had previously complained about mothers and their stories?

?You know, one thing I love about a move is it requires you to re-look through boxes you haven?t opened in quite awhile. It?s almost like a treasure hunt because you forget about most of the things you?ve put in there.

A couple of days ago I found a book that my sister, Jodie, had given me at the beginning of my pregnancy.?It?s called? The Mother in Me.

It is a beautiful book on growing into motherhood, and its purpose is to ?celebrate this season, to illustrate its unique challenges and delights, to reveal its deep significance.?

Something my sister wrote to me inside the cover has got me thinking:

?Dearest Kate,
I?m so happy that you are becoming a Mother. It?s the greatest gift we give to the world? I hope you enjoy these stories, successes, and sorrows of other mothers. Just know that you are never alone. God and the mothers that go before you will help you. Happy Birthday. I love you. ? JP?

?The mothers that go before you will help you.??Although it has been such a comfort to me to read these women?s thoughts, the past couple of days I?ve been thinking that hearing the stories, successes, and sorrows of the mothers in my own life would be even more powerful.

Motherhood is about transformation- it?s something that you grow into rather than something that happens to you all at once. I?m still in the first stages of motherhood, so I can?t yet comprehend the joy and nitty-grittyness of it all.

I?ve decided to surround myself with the stories of the mothers in my life that are farther along this delightful, arduous, exhilarating path each one of us has decided to walk on. I?m hoping that it will give me more courage than I?ve been feeling lately.

I?m calling it ?Countdown to Motherhood???

So I, as one of the mothers in her life,?received?the call and I responded by writing a blog for her. In my last conversation with her she said, ?Mom you should share it on your blog.? So here is the link to The Best Recipe for Happiness and my blog?on her blog? You can find all the mother stories from the women in her life here as well.?Enjoy. : )

Why Did The Elephant Have Thin Hair?

60-Second Science

Not because he left his toupee in his trunk. Thin hair can help an animal stay cool, while thicker hair can keep it warm. Christopher Intagliata reports.

Hair helps keep you warm, right? But hair can also keep you cooler than bare skin, as long as the hair is not too thick. So says a study in the journal PLoS ONE. [Conor L. Myhrvold, Howard A. Stone and Elie Bou-Zeid, What Is the Use of Elephant Hair?]

Researchers studied elephants, which have very thin coats of hair. It's easy for the beasts to overheat: they may face temperatures of up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, and they don't have much skin surface area to radiate the heat relative to their big body volume.?

That's where the hair comes in. The researchers wrote equations modeling the elephants' hairy skin. As they expected, thick hair traps air and keeps the body warm. But below a certain density, hair stops insulating and wicks heat off the body instead?helping the elephants get rid of an extra 20 percent of their body heat, especially on windless days.

Heat sinks inside computers work in a similar way, with pins sticking up to help dissipate the interior heat.

The researchers speculate that hair may have actually evolved to help animals stay cool, because it first sprouted in mammals over a hundred million years ago in a hot climate. Hair-raising times, indeed.

Google TV v3 demo video teases better search, mini-guide overlay and tablet control (Update)

Google TV v3 demo video teases better search, miniguide overlay and tablet control

During Google I/O this summer the Google TV team promised more features were on the way -- the upgraded Google Play app just arrived -- and now it's posted a "sneak peek" video (embedded after the break) that shows us a few. As promised, there's second screen integration allowing users to browse live TV and streaming content on the app, then choose it so it starts playing on the TV. Much of the demo is focused on the big improvements it says it's made to search, with voice search that works across TV and the internet to quickly pull up specific content, content by genre or perform specific tasks like tuning in a particular channel or website like Google Maps. There's also a new mini-guide overlay based on its personalized TV & Movies app so you can get an idea of what else is on without jumping completely away from what you were watching. Getting cheaper hardware available from more manufacturers is just one part of the puzzle, we'll see if these improvements make Google TV a desired intermediary between broadcast television and internet streaming.

Update: Someone may have goofed and released the vid accidentally, because it's been marked as private now. We did manage to grab a couple of snapshots though, check them out after the break.

Update 2: As we suspected, this was definitely an accidental early release of the video so while these updates are certainly on the way, they may not be right around the corner. According to a Google spokesperson "We're excited to bring users the next version of Google TV's software in the months ahead, but have nothing further to announce at this time." And so the waiting game begins.

(AP) ? The interception of a Syrian passenger plane from Russia, allegedly carrying military gear to Damascus, is a sign of Turkey's mounting frustration at the drawn-out conflict and its inability to hasten regime change in its neighbor, according to analysts.

Recent cross-border shelling from Syria that killed five Turkish civilians near the countries' 910-kilometer (566-mile) common frontier may have forced Turkey to act, but its options were limited.

"There's nothing magical about the timing. It's a coincidence resulting from the build-up of frustration in Ankara," said Fadi Hakura, a Turkey analyst at the Chatham House think tank in London. "Turkey wants to hasten the demise of the Assad regime in Damascus, but really its hands are tied."

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been at the forefront of international efforts to put pressure on the Assad regime and end its 19-month crackdown on the opposition. Last year, Ankara began allowing members of the rebel Free Syrian Army to operate in Turkey and now Syria's civil war has reached a stalemate.

"Given the current international impasse over the conflict in Syria, practical measures such as the interception of aircraft will become increasingly important for states seeking to restrict Syrian government forces' access to military-related goods from external sources," said Edin Omanovic, a researcher with the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

Turkish fighter jets on Wednesday intercepted the Syrian Air plane they said was carrying Russian ammunition and military equipment destined for the Syrian Defense Ministry. Syria branded the incident piracy and Russia said the action endangered the lives of Russian citizens aboard the aircraft.

Russia has been one of Syria's main weapons suppliers, and it has also been shielding the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad from U.N. sanctions.

Mehmet Yegin, an analyst with the Ankara-based International Strategic Research Organization, said that it was not yet clear whether the decision to force down the Moscow to Damascus plane was part of a larger drive to change the dynamic of the war.

"If it is acting with its allies, it's a clear message to Russia to get out of the picture and stop arming Syria," he added. "It is such a bold move, that one wonders if Turkey acted alone."

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland declined Thursday to comment on Turkish media reports that the intelligence on the plane's contents had come from the United States.

But she told reporters that Washington backed Turkey's decision to intercept the plane.

"Any transfer of any military equipment to the Syrian regime at this time is very concerning, and we look forward to hearing more from the Turkish side when they get to the bottom of what they found," said Nuland.

The exact contents of the cargo are still unclear: Turkey's prime minister described it as "ammunition," while Yeni Safak, a newspaper close to the Turkish government, reported Friday that the cargo contained 12 pieces of missile parts and "trigger devices" and that intelligence received was that it could be used by Syria against Turkey.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said late Friday that the plane was carrying radar parts for Syria, that the shipment complied with international law and that there was no weapon on board.

Lavrov said, however, that the cargo, consisting of "electric equipment for radars," was of dual purpose and could have civilian and military applications. The Russian company that sent it demands its return, he said.

Earlier, the respected Russian daily Kommersant quoted an unidentified source saying there were 12 boxes of spare parts for radars of the Syrian missile defense units.

"If the Kommersant report is right, you could speculate about this being part of a build-up to imposing a no-fly zone," said Hugh Pope, who leads the Turkey program for the International Crisis Group.

Such a move could be the first step toward lending Syria's rebels the same kind of international air support that helped bring down Libya's Muammar Gadhafi last year.

But most analysts see no push ? either in Turkey or among its Western allies ? for outside military involvement in Syria.

Fyodor Lukyanov, editor-in-chief of Russia in Global Affairs, said the incident also wasn't about sending any messages to Russia in particular, because Russia's stance on Syria is already clear and isn't likely to change.

Lukyanov said the plane incident showed that Turkey is "getting really nervous" with hostilities raging near its border. "Turkey is trying to demonstrate how tough and capable it is."

Meanwhile, Russia's and Turkey's growing business ties could suffer, he said.

If Turkey keeps on getting involved in Syria, "the political situation in Syria will have an increasing influence on other areas of their (Russian-Turkish) relations," said Lukyanov. "No one wants to heat this up, but sometimes things get out of hand."
