Dow hits 14,000, for a minute anyway

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Dow Jones industrial average briefly topped 14,000 on Friday morning, a milestone not seen since before the financial crisis rocked the markets and the world economy.

After rising steadily in early trading thanks to the U.S. jobs report, the Dow briefly crossed 14,000 around 10:07 a.m. EST. The milestone was by a hair ? the highest the Dow reached was 14,000.97 ? and it lasted only a moment. The index was trading around 13,980 shortly afterward. The other major stock indexes were also up.

The Dow has crossed 14,000 only 15 times in its history. The last time was Oct. 17, 2007.

If the gains hold and it closes above 14,000 on Friday, that would put it in even more rarefied territory: On just nine of those days did it manage to close above 14,000 at the end of trading.

That time more than five years ago seems almost a different era ? before signs of the devastating financial crisis were apparent to the average observer.

Lehman Brothers still existed. So did Bear Stearns, Wachovia and Washington Mutual. Housing prices were starting to ebb, but they hadn't cratered. The unemployment rate was 4.7 percent, meaning jobs were abundant.

The benchmark is not far from its all-time high, 14,164.53, which it reached on Oct. 9, 2007. A year later, in the depths of the financial crisis, it had shed nearly 40 percent of its value.

The Dow is an index of 30 big companies, and its purpose is to represent how the broader stock market is faring. And while hitting 14,000 would be an important psychological milestone, it wouldn't be much else.

The stock market is more a representation of how traders are feeling about the economy than the economy's underlying fundamentals. And many investors don't even think the Dow is the best way to track the market: They prefer the much bigger Standard & Poor's benchmark index, which follows 500 companies, because they think it represents a more accurate view of the economy.

"You can hit these milestones, but then it can always end badly," said Joe Gordon, managing partner at Gordon Asset Management in North Carolina. The fact that small investors are finally getting back in the stock market, he said, makes him think that stocks are due for a downturn.

"It's meaningless to the average professional," said Gordon, referring to the 14,000 benchmark. And for workers still unemployed by the financial crisis, he said, "it really means nothing to them."

At midmorning, the Dow was up 119 points to 13,980. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 10 to 1,508. The Nasdaq composite index was up 19 to 3,161.

Overall, the government jobs report that pushed stocks forward was mixed, but traders chose to focus on the positive. The U.S. said it added 157,000 jobs in January, which was in line with what traders had been expecting. Unemployment inched up to 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent in December. But, encouragingly, the government also reported that hiring over the past two years has been higher than it originally thought.

The jobs number is based on a survey of employers, and the unemployment rate is based on a separate survey of households, which is why they can diverge.

In Europe, tentative and incremental signs of a recovery were enough to push up stocks in France, Britain and Germany. December unemployment in the European Union was lower than analysts had feared, inflation unexpectedly fell, and a survey raised hopes of some growth in the manufacturing sector.

But there were also reminders that the debt problem is far from solved. The Netherlands was also forced to take over one of its major banks, to try to stave off a collapse. In Greece, dock workers extended a strike over the government's spending cuts.

Among companies making big moves:

? Drugmaker Merck fell nearly 3 percent, down $1.22 to $42.02. Its fourth-quarter profit suffered because of competition from generic medicines against its blockbuster allergy drug Singulair.

? Insurance company MetLife rose more than 1 percent, up 52 cents to $37.86, after saying it plans to buy the largest private pension fund administrator in Chile.

? Zoetis, an animal health business that Pfizer just spun off, made its debut on the stock market. It was up 18 percent, rising $4.63 to $30.62.

Physicists shine a light on particle assembly

Jan. 31, 2013 ? New York University physicists have developed a method for moving microscopic particles with the flick of a light switch. Their work, reported in the journal Science, relies on a blue light to prompt colloids to move and then assemble -- much like birds flock and move together in flight.

The method offers the potential to enhance the design of a range of industrial products, including the architecture of electronics.

The study's authors were: Jeremie Palacci and Stefano Sacanna, post-doctoral fellows in NYU's Center for Soft Matter Research who devised the research; David Pine and Paul Chaikin, professors in NYU's Department of Physics; and Asher Preska Steinberg, an undergraduate at Brandeis University who was a summer research program participant at NYU.

The work addresses a fundamental question in nature -- what causes flocks and swarms to form and move in a particular way? Schools of fish, colony formations of bacteria, or flocks of birds are examples of how this occurs in living matter. In this inquiry, the researchers focused on making artificial systems exhibit similar activity. They used colloids -- small particles suspended within a fluid medium -- and discovered the basic organizing principles in natural flocking and how to use this to organize inorganic matter.

This exploration is a significant one. Colloidal dispersions are composed of such everyday items such as paint, milk, gelatin, glass, and porcelain. By better understanding driven colloidal self-organization, scientists have the potential to harness these particles and create new and enhanced materials -- possibilities that are now largely untapped.

To explore this, the research team developed light-activated self-propelled particles, "swimmers," from the micro-meter-sized particles in solution. To separate the effects of swimming from simple thermal motion, they created a system where the particles turn on and off with application of blue light. With the light on, the self-propelled random swimmers collide and cluster. The light also triggers a slight chemical attraction and leads the clusters to crystallize and grow until the swimmers turn in separate directions and splinter the crystals. The "living" crystals continually form, swirl, and split. When the light is extinguished, the swimmers stop and the structures dissolve into individual diffusing colloidal particles.

Using the slight magnetism of the particles allows direction of the individual swimmers as well as the crystals. With control of light, magnets, and chemical attraction, these active particles bring biological organization to the materials world.

The research was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, under the NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) Program (DMR-0820341), the Department of Defense, under its Multidisciplinary Research Program of the University Research Initiative (W911NF-10-1-0518), and NASA under grant award NNX08AK04G.

Breast Cancer Survivor to Run Half Marathon Sunday in Huntington ...

A woman who recently battled breast cancer is among runners who are preparing for the Surf City USA Marathon and Half Marathon this Sunday in Huntington Beach.

Lindy Ward, 51, is principal of Dunlap Elementary School in Yucaipa, and she lives in Redlands in San Bernardino County. She is planning to run the half marathon on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3.

In June 2009, she found a large lump protruding from her upper chest and she was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, marathon officials said. Within two weeks, she had a mastectomy and lymph nodes removed. Over the next two years, Lindy had 16 rounds of chemotherapy and 32 daily radiation treatments.

"I feel very fortunate and blessed to be able to share my story," Lindy told Redlands-Loma Linda Patch in phone interview Wednesday. "If I can inspire just one more person to keep up hope. There is hope."

Lindy said she attended a funeral Tuesday Jan. 29 for a childhood friend who did not survive colon cancer.

"She was diagnosed about four to five months after I was, in 2009," Lindy said. "It was so sad. We grew up together in Grand Terrace. But it was also a reminder of how precious life is, and how important it is to embrace what we've been given. Health is truly a gift we should not waste."

Lindy said she has never considered herself an athlete. But after chemotherapy, and being unable to walk without pain, it felt like a blessing to be able to put on shoes and go running.

"It wasn't easy at first," Lindy said. "People don't understand how chemotherapy affected my whole body. Some people said 'You had breast cancer, how did that affect your feet?'

"But chemotherapy wrecked my whole body," she said. "All my cells and nerves, my fingernails and toenails fell off. It kills cancer but it kills the healthy cells too. Thank goodness it killed the cancer."

Lindy said she and her friend Barbara Caballero, a teacher at Park View Middle School in Yucaipa, started out running very slowly and worked their way up to half marathons.

"We ran together in the Run Through Redlands in April and it was awesome," Lindy said. "My radiation was at Redlands Community Hospital and I got to run by that hospital and leave it in the dust, put it behind me. It was surreal."

She said she still does not run that fast but she loves it. She said she'll be running this Sunday in Huntington Beach with her son, Robert Ward, 22, of La Verne. Robert is in grad school at Cal Poly Pomona.

"I always run in pink, for my breast cancer awareness," Lindy said. "There is hope. Ten years ago what I was diagnosed with was a death sentence. Triple negative breast cancer is extremely aggressive. The only way to combat it is with chemotherapy and maximum radiation. They told me aggressive cancer needs aggressive treatment. But I worked through it all."

Lindy said she wishes everyone could go through her experience - without the pain - so they could see and feel what she has.

"In April 2011, I was vice principal at Chapman Elementary, and one day the entire student body, the teachers, everyone dressed in pink for me," Lindy said. "I wish everyone could experience that, to be the recipient of so much compassion and humanity. It was incredible."

There are more than 150 people from Redlands registered to run in the Huntington Beach event, Jennifer Hernandez of the Surf City USA Marathon and Half Marathon said. The event is expected to draw 20,000 participants and an estimated 50,000 spectators.

The full Surf City Marathon serves as a qualifier for both the Olympic Trials and Boston Marathon, according to organizers.
